Last night, I was under siege thanks to a very foolishly downloaded program. Oops. I have never had my machine taken over to that extent. Every page I tried to view on IE was redirected, spybot and adware refused to run, desktop and taskbar were disappearing, it was madness.
Luckily, I was working with a very new windows install, and this computer had nothing important at all on it. That allowed me lots of wiggle room to try drastic or experimental things.
BUT, no such actions were necessary, as I entered ONE search term, I found this thread.

I followed Little Eagles advice and within 20 minutes I was back in business. Fortunately, my problem was much more clear cut than the other guys, so I was able to repair it much easier than he was.
