Vundo + Darksma = popups

[quicksilver88]

HI, I'm George. I'm having trouble with two files named: Vundo.PQ and Darksma.HQ.

There is also an issue with EXPLORER.EXE not starting up when I log in, or sometimes closing after I've logged in. I think they may be related. Maually launching EXPLORER.EXE seems to temporarilly correct this.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Don't use it yet.

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log


Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Hi again. There's an issue I just remembered that since a long while back I have not been able to use safemode.

When I try starting up safemode, it goes through a number of .sys files and then stops and says "Press ESC to cancel loading SPTD.sys" From there the computer procedes to restart and return back to the page where you can choose to start up normally or go into safe mode.

Would you happen to know any other way into safe mode, or a fix that could be run without safe mode?

As an update, I have removed SPTD and seems that is not the issue at all. Now when I try starting safe mode, I see the list of .sys files that ends on agpCPQ.sys and then it just restarts the computer.

We can't use SDFix if you can't access safe mode.

But that is no problem, then we just other tools.

Combo fix did something and it seems the adds have stopped, at least at this moment.

However, it did not finish. After the restart it stayed open for about an hour and then I had to leave so I closed it, therefore no log was produced.

I will be posting an updated log of HJT and hopefully you can let me know of anything else I can do from here.

I went through possibilities for getting into safe mode, but as of yet no luck. That site had many recommendations, some of which were beyond my technical level. If you have any ideas, I'm all ears. I was also a bit worried since there were a few complaints that those 'remedies" made the problem worse in some cases.

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Ok so I ran it and it stopped at the same part when it restarted again. None of the mentioned processes were running, but " CF13495.exe " seemed out of place, so I ended that and the scan proceeded to finish thereafter.

Empty Recycle Bin.

Create own folder for HijackThis to Desktop and move it into that folder.

After that:

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note: This scanner will work with Internet Explorer Only!

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Select/highlight and right click the entry, and choose: Properties
On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button
Beside: Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
Click Apply, then OK

Now, go to Start > Run, and copy/paste the following into the Open box:
sc delete WinSvchostManager
Click: OK

Reboot.

Delete this:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcprs32.exe

Empty this folder:

C:\QooBox\Quarantine

Empty Recycle Bin.

Re-scan with kaspersky.

On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button

I was unable to stop it as the option was not 'clickable'



Beside: Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
Click Apply, then OK

I did disable it and followed the remaining steps to delete the other files.

I am now running kaspersky. I just wanted to update you in case that changes anything.

I no longer get pop ups, and havent had any issues with explorer.exe failing to load.

The only issue I have now is when I turn on my pc from being shut down, most of the time msn will begin to load (not sure if that's the issue at all though) then it freezes. At that point the internet doesnt work at all. Logging out and back into the account (not restarting) solves the issue as it then loads properly. When that happens and I go to log off, there are usually 3 programs that crash (not sure at the moment what they are) but one is always a different set of 3 random numbers and/or letters.

Any ideas?

Well, after one start up, the problem hasnt come up, so hopefully that worked. Otherwise I think everything else is clean

The final issue I have left is the problem with not being able to enter safemode... I think that may require a fresh install with the Gateway restore disk... unless you have any ideas I can try with regards to that, I think we're done here.

Exit AVZ.

Seems I just had the stalling issue on startup again. When I went to Log out, "a54" (alwasy 3 random characters) and msnmsgr.exe crashed... then when I logged back in it worked fine as usual.

With regards to AVZ, I cannot download the file you speak of... there is however a similar one, but it's not in english and I cannot understand the menus at all. Maybe if you just walk me through what to press. According to another site, I think I should press the first drop down menu (file?), then option 10 on the list (?), and from there I would assume I'm pressing the button with the green triangle to start it.

Sorry to hear that. Anyway, that is a misc windows issue and not a malware issue any more. I can re-direct you to some windows forum if you like to.

As for AVZ, my bad.

There is currently only Russian version out.

When I "Run AVZ then click File > System Recovery>", the box that opens up is empty and I have no options, such as "Restore Safeboot Reg keys".

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and save it to your desktop.
Scroll down to where it saysThe Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications..
Click the Download button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt2 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.


Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt2 attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.


Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
