Hello. Thank you so much for your help.

My computer has ad popups constantly and Spybot scan has uncovered various problems which it fixed, but the viruses keep returning. I am confused about the spybot popups which warn about registry changes and whether I should allow them. Do the spybot "fixes" require me to allow them to change the registry? I am afraid to allow them and maybe that is why the fix is not permanent? Also when I read some of the virus descriptions they seem to be more dangerous than a simple ad popup.

Please tell me what to do next. Thank you!!!

Here is the Kapersky Log Report. I copied the HJT log into a separate post since this one was too long.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Well, at least you got the right information posted, you would be surprised at how few do:sad:

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< your Java program is BADLY out of date and likely why you are infected. Download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

(you may want to contact Sun Java about their crappy update scheduler?)

You have several infections so I am going to run two tools now. I am never asking you to hurry, take the time you need to be careful. I start early (EST) and stop around 8 PM EST just so you know. If you run into questions, post them, that is far better than proceeding and making an error we may or may not be able to correct.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

http://vundofix.atribune.org/ <<< tutorial

"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot. Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

(wait until you finish to post reports and logs)

3) Tutorial if needed:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the Vundofix.txt, combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks...Phil

Thank you for the prompt reply.

As you suggested, I will ask these questions beforehand. I want to get it right the first time!

Do I need to update the Java first? When I go to the site, it gives me three choices for download:

Windows x64 executable
Windows Offline Installation
Windows Online Installation

I'm not sure which one to choose.

Also, I keep getting the SpyBot S&D popups while I am working asking me to allow changes to the registry. What should I answer?

Thanks for the questions, the second one first. #1 in the instructions give you details for turning off TeaTimer, that will stop those popups and keep TeaTimer from blocking our tools and other changes we must make. It is a very good tool, just not needed right now.

Java: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp <<< this is the link I am looking at. I feel sorry for you because you have the update scheduler running:
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe

Since Java sued Microsoft and gained the right in the courts to be able to run their program with Windows, you would think they would provide tools that work. This is why I suggested you contact them about the scheduler not working. Updates from the version you have to the newest version is difficult and not something I do so I know little about the problems you might run into (I do my updates manually and turned off the useless, resource using scheduler long ago. It may be you have to contact Sun Java for help or instructions? You can look in your control panel for
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
but I am not sure it existed for that version. The console now has an update tab and a button to check for updates.

You may wait to do this but it will not get easier and the danger of opening webpages with out of date Java are evident here:
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/05/the_next_net_th.html
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2007/11/07/rogue_antispyware_ads/

I'll let you call how to proceed with that, the support link is on that same page.

Thanks...Phil

Thanks for the info. I plowed ahead and removed the old Java and installed the new. After I ran vundofix and combofix, I opened Explorer to access this forum. When I did a couple of windows popped up but they were both blank instead of containing ads. I have no idea if this is relevant but I'm including it anyway. Thanks.

Here is the Vundofix log:

Thanks for returning your information, this infection will be complaining until it is gone, so expect that.

1) TeaTimer must be disabled.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Driver::
a3055.sys

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\a3055.sys
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xagwsbgw.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mrxpcutj.ini
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\quzarehox.dll

Save this as
CFScript

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

(wait until you finish to post those reports)

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(don't be concerned iof something is not there)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {012C6569-1160-4E9A-89E6-EE2D8F81A469} - (no file)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: xxyyaax - xxyyaax.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\quzarehox.dll <<< make sure that file is gone

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart, post the report from combofix, a new HJT log and some feedback.

Thanks

You will want to review this information now:
I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.

I would like to install Recovery Console and I will need to install it from Combofix. Just let me know the appropriate time to do this. Thank you. Also I had no ad popups when opening IE this time.
Here is the ComboFix log. The HJT log is on the next post.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Now would be the time to install Recovery Console. It needs to be done while combofix is still on the computer and I remove it as part of the final cleanup before running a last Kaspersky scan.

I installed RC on two of my computer and as long as you read and follow the directions it is very simple. Start here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
How to install and use the Windows XP Recovery Console

If on the other hand, you use Windows XP and do not have the Windows CD, ComboFix includes a method of installing the Windows Recovery console by downloading a file from Microsoft. To install the Windows Recovery Console when you do not have the Windows XP CD, please follow these instructions:
When the installation is over, post the .txt file you receive.

Thanks

I found my XP CD but when I follow the instructions for Recovery Console, I get a message that my computer has a later version of XP than is on the CD with other dire warnings. I think that I might try to do this at a later date. I need more time to fully read everything and understand what I am doing if I need to download something different. The instructions are telling me to download onto CDs or floppies which I don't have.

Could we wrap this up tonight? Or will I really need to have Recovery Console before the final steps are done? Is it a big risk not to have it at this point?

That is why I suggested the installation method with combofix. Remove combofix, C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\, Vundofix and the C:\Vundofix Backups\ folders from your computer and then run a new Kaspersky online scan using these settings:

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks

I looked again and was able to find how to download it to my desktop. I think my eyes and mind are tired.

I will follow the directions from here and see what happens. Thank you.

Thank you so much!!! But one more thing please for my own education and knowledge. I see how emptying recycle bin and deleting SYM quantantine gets rid of most of the infected items but what gets rid of these? Won't they still be there if I was to run another scan?

Also, my husbands computer was displaying symptoms this morning even though we are not networked. He has never had this problem and he updated his Java last night. This morning he had a lot of "cleaner" software ad popups so I'm afraid that we may be in for it again.

Do I post it in a separate post or can we continue this one?

System Restore is something Microsoft came up with similiar to a backup, but different points of time so you can go back to a point in the past that is "hopefully" before the infection point or other problem.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Restore
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084
The link I posted above provides more information. These are protected files and turning SR off cleans all System Restore information. When you turn it back on, you set a new SR point which is clean of malware.

Open a new topic on the forum, be sure to review the "Before you Post" information at the top of the forum.
