My symptoms are as follows:

1)Active desktop is hijacked (desktop background replaced) by a message describing fatal errors etc and need to run spyware remover etc, taskbar popups that indicate comp is running slowly, etc...full screen popups touting 'Spy Away' and 'Perfect Cleaner'.

2) Task manager disabled; cannot re-enable via either direct regedit or registry fix .exe...it is IMMEDIATELY returned to disabled state.

3) Spybot scan turns up ~30 threats...removes 'successfully'...rescans and finds basically same threats again...endless cycle...whether in safe mode or otherwise.

I'm at a loss...I have dealt with previous spyware with relative ease but this one seems to have me locked out of the loop and I'm REALLY disoriented by the seeming lack of TRUSTWORTHY sources on the net...thanks in advance for any help!

Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

1) AVG Anti-Spyware:
Open AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the multi-colored box emblazoned with an 'S' in the system tray.
In the 'Resident Shield' section, toggle the AVG Anti-Spyware active protection 'off' by clicking 'Change state' which will then change the protection status to 'inactive'.
If you are instructed to reboot at any time during your cleanup, AVG Anti-Spyware will prompt you as to whether you would like to "Restart the Resident Shield".
Reply 'no' and set it to 'inactive' for the duration of your cleanup.

2) Spybot S&D TeaTimer <<< if you run this program, disable it until we are completely finished with this cleanup.

3) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

4) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ <<< delete the contents of the "Recovery Folder"

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

6) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the C:\rapport.txt, the Report.txt from SDFix and a new HijackThis log
