View Full Version : Smitfraud-C and Zlob Infections.

Being plagued with Smitfraud-C and Zlob. First indications were homepage changes, add-ons to IE7's menu bar and onto the Desktop with "Error Cleaner", "Privacy Protector", and "Spyware Protection", false security alerts, etc. Pisses me that McAfee and Windows Defender didn't see any of this. Spybot S&D did see it, and I followed up by adding Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard from Javacool. Spybot S&D now set to Resident, Spyware Guard now preventing my home page from being highjacked. Still, sweeping for and then deleting Smitfruad and Zlob is now an everyday thing.

First time in years I've had an issue like this. Used to run Symantic on my Windows NT system until it eat the hard drive, then ran Trend Micro under Win 98 until it let bugs in, and now thinking of throwing out McAfee and switching to Kapersky.

Directions on how to get this S**T out of my system will be greatly appreciated.

Ran Spybot S&D again, redeleted both problems, then ran Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, says it detected Zlob (which Spybot S&D said it took out) and deleted it but it didn't report Smitfraud-C.

But I've still got near-continuous alerts of home page hijacking attempts and false antivirus popup windows all over the place. My home PC is no longer usable (I'm using my work laptop to make this entry).

Please help me, guys.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

Hi Bill, we will need to turn TeaTimer off. I want to point out, as someone who has run SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster for many years, TeaTimer and Spyware Guard perform the same function. I suggest you never enable it.

This is Smitfraud...the operable word being FRAUD. They mess up the computer in the hopes you will send them $50.00 for a rouge program that does not work.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
