karmdrefner
2008-03-12, 20:50
recently had a malware problem something to do with myway.mywebsearch/ trojan downloader. I believe i may have sorted the problem thanks to you guys but i'm not sure?

The reason i'm not sure is, at fairly regular intervals my comp is running loads of processes on task manager even when it is idle. making the comp run slowly this problem coincided with the virus . I need someone to check HJT log to see if they can see a problem.
Thanks

KARM

examples of what are happening is.
alot of the time My pc is spiking and running at 100% even when idle.It takes 30mins before this settles (even before emptying the prefetch folder).
on task manager svchost.exe ,vaultclientSRV.exe, system idle process, yop.exe are the programms using most memory or most processes at these times???

the comp generally is running slower web pages open with just the title showing then about 5/10 secs later the rest of the page shows (with some pics missing sometimes)

Most importantly i have run norton security inspector and it says something along the line s of your ip addresses are being directed to a new host.It gives me the option of fixing this which i do it seems to work but if i try again aby a couple of days later the problem has returned.

This is in keeping with the problem connected with myway.mywebsearch which Norton was unable to detect but spybot did. After removal this would reinstall itself.
on trying to fix this ps kelly got me to download kapsersky and this found a trojan downloader in a wma file which i deleted. neither problem is apparently on the computer any more biut the spiking etc started at the time of their discovery and is still happening. Is it possible that i have a viris which is mutating somehow to avoid detection or is letting other viruses on to the comp. After trojan was deleted the pc ran a bit faster bit the spiking has been a contant problem.

I would suggest its a hardware issue but Norton was unable to pick up/stop the innitial problem and y is the secrity inspector finding a reaccuring threat???

eagerly awaiting your views/insructions

cheers

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

got a feeling it has attached to my email accounts so have posted this to change options not to receive email notifications. I'll check via the site , incase the user of the spyware virus can keep updated what were doing and mutate it - if this is the case damn it might be too late?.....i'm really getting paranoid arn't I!!!!!!!

Let's do a little cleanup.

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.

----------------------------------------
Download and run - ATF Cleaner instructions here. (http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925)

--------------------------------

Reboot and rescan with HiJackThis and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

followed your instructions, did you mean clean up as in uninstall combofix?? and got the following message

"windows cannot find combofix make sure you type the name correctly and try again." (i had)

when i went to the desktop i found that combo fix was actively being unistalled is this what you wanted to happen?? (if not how on earth??) was expecting to use it??....so i reinstalled it from the link you gave me earlier..... i then found that i couldnt connect to the internet and had to reeboot!!
(even though i've reinstalled when i tried again to run "ComboFix /u " i got the same message)

Couple of other things..... what happened to the file found in the eset scan was i manually spose to find and delete it??? because not sure if it was done automatically with the scan it suggested it only had discovered it and i needed the full version to remove it?? (PC still playing up any way cant have been removed i guess)

2ndly evidence that it has access to my email as well as windows is that when i open a new window it opens in a really small minimized state and more importantly when i open my hotmail account i get the following message

" you are about to leave a secure internet connection it will be possible for others to view information you send.do you want to continue?"

If you followed the instructions it should have removed it.

Make sure the options:

are both checked!

Just a nag screen...........nothing to worry about.

Download the OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe).

Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.

Press cleanup & it will search for and delete/uninstall all the tools we have used
to fix your problems and all their backup folders and then delete itself when you next reboot.

Hi lE, right
For about 10 to 15min of glorious surfing i thought the problem may have been fixed comp seemed to be running almost perfectly......but then the spiking returned (seemed to coincide with opening a link to facebook in favouirtes probably nothing but have deleted this link now)
...think it has reinstalled itself again?? the comp slows intermittantly when the spiking starts up getting non responsive pages and error reports happening the pages are showing the headers again before the rest of the screen appears!!

On the plus side the web pages open out fully and the hotmail is opening without that warning message about people being able to see my information. ( this was the state of play a week or so ago as these problems appeared long after the spiking and slowness etc had originally presented itself on the pc. makes me think we have cleared the threat found by eset but there is an underlying problem which is allowing other threats onto my pc. PS kelly cleared a trojan downloader virus picked up on kaspersky but agian soon after the spiking reapeared and i got the addtional problems of the minimized windows etc.

whats next captain?? enjoying the challenge of trying to beat this bastard virus but wondering if the only option is to reinstall windows but obviously this is a last resort and is something i'm keen to avoid if at all possible. have included a hjt log in cas it shows up anything?!?!

one last thing when i originally knew there was a problem on the pc that norton wasnt picking up i downloaded spybot which was finding a myway.mywebsearch threat which it would delete but subsequently rein stall itself. teatimer would give me the option of deleting registry changes or allowing them...not sure if i allowed /denied the right ones...is it worth (if possible) to check these to se if it might help resolve the whole issue??just an idea...hey what do i know ....(not much lol)

just like before its taken far too long to load up the desktop(even with a cleared prefetch folder taken into account) surfing was quick and working normally untill the spiking started (assuming this is the "problem" reinstalling itself) then all the problems i have already described came back including the when i ran security inspector on norton i was advised that my ip addresses were agian being redirected to another host.

Notice when i restart the comp a programm called ccApp closes is this anything??

when the desktop loads the taaskbar loads after all the shortcuts have loaded is this normal???probably.

Would it show anything if i ran HJT log when the spiking is in full flow? below is the latest log

Would it show anything if i ran HJT log when the spiking is in full flow? May be but the task manager might let you know what is eating up all the memory.
CTRL ALT DELETE will bring it up.

:sad:Just seen the most obvious evidence that my comp has been hacked.

I have allready mentioned to you that when running security inspector on norton it advised that ip adresses have been redirected to a diffrent host and even when i fix it the problem returns....
the evidence of this is that whilst looking at my emails on my email address provided by my isp and that i use outlook for I noticed that one of my friends had replied to an email thread which though i am included on.....i most certainly havent received i'm guessing the only reason i received this partcular email was because i fixed th problem on security inspector otherewise someone else would still have been receiving my emails!! really quite worried now!

Thanks for all your help and patience with this little eagle but can you tell me if were any closer to finding the root of this problem? knowing someone else is receiving my email plus who knows what else is rather distressing.

Click start > control panel > user accounts > change the way users log on or off > uncheck fast user switching > restart you computor.

Download, unzip and run 'RootkitRevealer' from Sysinternals:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RootkitRevealer.html
Once the program has started, press Scan and let it run.
When the scan is done, use 'File > Save' to place the logfile in a convenient location (such as the desktop). The default filename will be 'RootkitReveal.txt'.

Save your Log File
Copy/Paste the contecnts of that logfile into your next reply

NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

That way you should have a much simpler and clearer log file in which to pursue and evaluate.

as requested.Looks like you might have gotten to the ...ROOT" of the problem( razor like it form me dont you think! :0) ) Windows wouldnt let me save it to the desktop innitially though saying the folderfile name does not exist or something the spiking has gone mad too as soon as the scan finished?? again probably just coincidence??

unable to cut and paster so have added as an attachement as a zip file is this any good????

Download ComboFix again from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

I've noticed at present it has a facebook emblem next to it!!!

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\Motive\btbb\pskill.exel

Save this as Save this as "CFScript"

http://nutnworks.com/CFix/CFScript.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

You know what....innitial signs are good. it Has only spiked once when i've tried in the last 2 days when i checked my mail in my outlook email account.Apart from that the surfing seems to be back normal..... wow!!!

Unfortunately one thing that is deffo not right is the startup.
The one time it did spike i decided to shut down the comp(held down power button) on the restart it took forever still best part of 20 mins to get on line and to settle. A blue screen also appeared saying that one of disks needed to be scanned for errors and that it recoommended i didnt skip the process have seen this happen 3 times now but not before i started having these troubles? is this an out standing seperate issue or does this suggest a hardware issue/failure???

I have deleted the 04 file as we talked about just to be on the safe side. and i will continue to monitor the performance over the next couple of days to completely vanquish any fears that its going to reinstall itself or return.
I will let you know and thank you properly then. until them prelimanary kudos to you lil eagle (A.K.A the dude!)

I am then hoping you can tie up some loose ends ie deletes some of the programs/files and processes we have gone through just to maximise disk space and limit damage (ie hide the hidden system files we have "outed"

again thanks for your commitment to finding/fixing this problem to date , will be touch again shortly with a difinitive verdict.:)

LE, trust me, the last thing i wanted was to for me to writing this but ...it seems there may still be a problem. The pc though not doing it half as much is still spiking for no reason form time to time. This on its own would be acceptable if i could be sure it wasnt a threat as when its not happening the pc performance seems ok.

The things that worry me are the start up. Timed it at 20mins today looking on task manager the 2 programms with most procesess running were vault client SRV (think this may relate to a digital vault application i have for saving files dont remember it ever causing pc performance problems before the spyware issue and an application called ans LUCOMS~1.exe.
Norton loads last after everything else like messenger and IE. Most imprtantly i ran the security inspector which no probs for the last 3 days today was showing that IP addresess were again being directed to a differrent host.

Cant help thinking that all 3 problems are connected some how and unitil the comp loads up properly i cant be sure that the problem has been fixed. what do you think??:spider:

LE we are definately making progress..in fact i may have thought the situation worse than it actually is...I wasnt lying when i said the pc was still spiking it was. What i done was to uninstall and reinstall bt auto back up and its my digital vault. (linked with the vault.srv that was running so many processes on spiking)

Since i done this the spiking is so much smaller and so far its almost been a day without any major spikes, just to put your mind at rest it didnt always spike like this the virus must have affected it some how.

Being the paranoid android i am ,i still think i should run the stinger, what do you think?????? was the HJT log clear.?????? I thought i should check with you as on the instructions for running the scan it tells me to disable the system restore and then it should prompt me to reeboot. I did this and it didnt prompt me to reeboot. Is this important to reboot??? should i manually reeboot or just run it without does it matter????

Like i said its probably best i run this 1 last scan but on the other hand ithink were so close i didnt want to undo all our good work at the 11th hour if there is a risk to the system - The saying goes if it aint broke dont fix it...all very well but i dont know for sure it is!!!

Sall i still run it , turing off the restore and rebooting before scanning???

it tells me to disable the system restore and then it should prompt me to reeboot. You do not need to disable system restore yet, but I would run the scan. Rebooting is necessary so that the files do not show up in other scans.

Ran as requested.

2things though downloaded form link you gave option no.1 (not epo version) and it says its out of date but the link for the updated version is the link you gave?? should i do the w32/pollip version and secondly poor i know but i couldnt work out how to scan my computer so the results are only for the c drive.

Lets run an F-Secure online scan.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
When cleaning has finished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
Click Automatic cleaning
When cleaning has finished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

Note: This scan will only work with Internet Explorer.
You must be logged on a administrator rights to run this scan.
The scan may take a few hours.

as requested attached is the log. Computer not regularly spiking like before or any where near as bad butaccording to task manager one i had just now was was probably caused by App.Svc32.exe looking at the processes

Computer runnning pretty well at the moment generally though when new windows are open they dont always open out full size they are opening in different shapes ie some are half the screen size others 3 quarters and some square shape this doesnt seem normal.

Also my keyboard seems to be playing up as alot of the buttons i press dont show even after changing the batteries but cant believe this is connected.

# still intriged to know what is redirecting my ip addresses every now and again. COuld it be that there has been a rule created to allow access through my firewall thus allowing the problem to return? the 2 spywear/rootkit problems found on the llast scan were they ones that we have already deleted before?

Still not seeing any reason.

Are you fond of Symantec? This may be the reason for the spiking.

If so reinstall it, if not replace it.

I like Nod32 http://www.eset.com/download/index.php
But AVG is also good. Both have anti-spyware programs that work fine with Spybot. Just have one realtime protection running.
