View Full Version : @$%!* Virtumonde won't leave me alone!

AlienWhere?
2008-03-13, 03:44
I have been running SpyBot S&D (fully updated) and have also CA Anti-Spyware.

No matter how many times I boot into Safe Mode and run S&D, when I boot back into Windows and run S&D it still keeps finding Virtumonde. The only thing that I've noticed is that the associated DLL name keeps changing,
e.g. viturr.dll; ddccy.dll etc.

Below are the log files from Kapsersky. HJT will be in following post. Thanks in advance for this great site.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

1) C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< rename HJT.exe, call it AlienWhere.exe, that will work. Perhaps after a restart we will get a look at this junk.

2) System Restore is infected, untill we clean it later, do not use System Restore.

3) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

http://vundofix.atribune.org/ <<< tutorial

"Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click
the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot. Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

Post the Vundofix.txt and a new HJT log

Thanks

I performed the new HJT scan. (log is below) and downloaded Vundo fix (7.0.3) and ran a scan. The scan came up clean with no infections found. :red:

Maybe I have a new variant which might also explain why my normal AV and spyware scanners (CA Security Suite) did not reveal anything either, even with updated sigs. Now I'm getting concerned.

New HJT log

member posted identical HJT logs.

This infection has been around for a while, and it is constantly changing. If you want me to help, you will need to start by following directions, not expecting fast or easy. I asked you to post this information.
Post the Vundofix.txt and a new HJT log
Not only that, I showed you where to find the information if you had any doubts.
Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\
Post the information I requested and we will continue, not following instructions will only slow down the process which is hard enough as it is.

Thanks

AlienWhere?

Sorry... My bad. Here's the vundofix.txt log and the latest HJT log which you requested.

To be clear, you wanted just those two files and nothing else, correct? I'm just trying to make sure that I don't waste your time or anyone else's.

Thanks again. :)

Thanks for returning your HJT log which is showing no signs of the infection, how is the computer running.

See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\ <<< Java needs an update.

Run a new Kaspersky Online Scan so I can see if any Vundo infection is hiding, use these settings. Expect infections, we need to clean System Restore yet.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here. Post a fresh HJT log with the KOS scan also.

Thanks

In spite of the apparent failure of some of the previous steps, performance is beginning to return. Now the CPU time is hunting between 3% and 14%, which is a good improvement over the 35%-75% hunting it was doing before. The key difference is that rundll32.exe is not running. Over a out of 20:15 hrs of CPU time logged, it was responsible for 6:22 hrs. :(

I have update the JRE to v.6 upd 5.

Logs to follow when I'm done with new Kospersky and HJT scans.

Thank you again for your time and help. It's been invaluable. Donations will be made when PC is clean. :)

Is showing this Vundofile as being active:

1) C:\WINDOWS\system32\yayvspq.dll <<< you need to navigate to that location and be sure that file is gone.

2) C:\VundoFix Backups\ <<< delete that folder and contents

3) C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\backups\backup-20080313-173323-402.dll <<< delete that file from HJT backups

I have finished performing the steps you provided in your last post. Initially, I was unable to delete the yayvspq.dll files until after the final steps were performed, as I received "file locked" messages. Now it is one though and the KOS is clean.

Potential issue remaining?
This morning I re-enabled SpyBot S&D Tea Timer and immediately started seeing pop-up notifications about the yayvspq.dll:

3/15/2008 4:56:55 PM Denied (based on user blacklist) value "yayvspq" (new data: "") deleted in Winlogon Notifiers!

So it looks like S&D is stopping it but doesn't this mean it's still resident on the system?

I am running a standard KOS now.
I have run an S&D scan. The S&D scan was clean and I have not been able to find a copy of yayvspq.dll on the machine.

I'm tempted to say the machine is clean but the S&D Tea Timer messages are freaking me out. :red:

Thanks for helping me out, you've been very patient and helpful.

Hi Steve, a few of questions for you.

1) Are you running the newest version of Spybot 1.5.2?
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd15/index.html

2) Are your updates current?

3) Are you fully immunized?

If this is the case and HJT and KOS show nothing, post your question here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4
to see what the Spybot S&D experts have to say. Post a link to that topic so I can track it if you would.

Thanks

Okay. Will do.
The HJT looked clean. I am just waiting on the KOS to complete and will go from there.

BTW: Performance seems to be okay so I think I'm just a bit paranoid at this point. Hopefully KOS will be clean. :)

Thank you again.
