Help please

I'm not sure what is wrong with this computer. It runs slow, and the internet periodically closes on some pages. I have norton and spyware doc installed and updated and they can't find anything but activescan provided a couple:

I recently got fed up and reformatted the computer and that "OmniPass" program seems to have come out of nowhere, can you tell me what that is in addition to any other problems you can locate?

Hello and welcome to the forum. I am not sure if you want to know what OmniPass is or if you wish me to help resolve other issues. This information should clear up the one issue:

If you want to take a hard look at the system for anything else that might be lurking, please do this in the posted order.

1) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a trial version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this one with these instuctions:

Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Post the ewido scan report, a new HJT log and any feedback you think I should have.

Thank you for the help, the computer is now running noticably quicker.

Pure curiosity, why is it unsafe to leave HJT on the desktop?

There is still one recurring problem, some kind of virus that norton is not picking up I'm guessing. It puts up a popup with the heading "Message System" and says there is a system error and directs me to a website: http://www.repairreg.com. I did not follow the directions but looked it up online and it appeared to be a bad idea to go to the website but I couldn't find out how to get rid of the problem. Any suggestions?

I am not finding much information about hXXp://www.repairreg.com either, it looks like a legit product? Post that link you looked at online. It is possible it is coming from this:
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/ if so, follow the instructions for your system, if that is not it the only possible sites are these two, and while these are not malware and are considered valid, some folks questions that? Are you running a popup blocker, if you need a good one I would suggest this one: http://toolbar.google.com/ but my suggestion is to use just the basic toolbar and popup blocker and avoid all of the junk that will use resources and rarely if ever be used.

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Thanks a lot, that messenger service is what the popups were so I just turned that off. I'll be sure to keep the computer clean from now on. I am still experiencing one problem however, it may be a problem with the webpage. This is my girlfriends computer and she is attending the University of Washington. Their email system is a piece of junk (which is why I'm inclined to blame that) but more and more lately internet explorer has "encountered problems" only when the school's email server, "webpine" is open. Other webpages had been closing, but those closures were always accompanied by the messenger service popup windows, the webpine closures never are. Apparently this used to happen too, but it had stopped for about a year and a half (right after I reformatted her computer because of a worm) and has just recently resurfaced...we aren't sure whether it resurfaced before or after I reformatted her computer again just a couple weeks ago in an attempt to clean it up and speed it up. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello Anton, Chances are if the UW website is the only one where you are experiencing issues, that is has to do with your settings as it applies to them and you might want to bring up the issue with the site administrator. You many also want to look at this information:
