I've been fighting a serious PC infection since last Sunday. I have removed some of the infections with my own sleuthing and with the help of the Kaspersky analyzer. But I can't get rid of the infection completely. I have posted here twice but didn't provide the required logs. I'm back with the logs this time and I hope they help. I'll post the Kaspersky log first. When I tried to post the log here a couple of minutes ago, it said there was too much text. I deleted a lot of lines about an old Eudora email archive. I don't access the old email stuff anymore and it was around before my problems started.

I couldn't whittle the logs down to be under 20000 characters so I'm posting the hjt logs seperately even though I think the instructions said don't do that. Sorry.

Next is the hjt log:

I had deleted some of the exe's mentioned in this report before, like C:\Program Files\antiviirus.exe but they are back again. I'll wait to delete anything else until I hear back from a helper.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -- Mike.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

I can see you have been fighting this infection and it looks like a lot of it is dead, let's do a little research first, before we start, the KOS results.

You wil have to decide on this one, Kaspersky is showing 38 suspicious email files here:
C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Old Eudora eMail Files\in.mbx Mail Berkeley mbox <<< there. If you are not positive they are clean, I would delete them all.

There are also four infected System Restore files which we will clean a bit later.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post only the C:\rapport.txt

Thanks

As far as my Eudora email inbox, I have no doubt that one or more emails is infected. The problem is, the Kasperky logs are not helpful in telling me exactly with emails are infected. It told me 2 Outlook emails for infected and told me which ones that were and I deleted them. So my choice is to get rid of years of correspondence by deleting the whole mbx. I did delete one mbx it said has a virus because I had no need for it anymore. I could delete the whol in.mbx, but it would be painful for me.

Secondly, I said when I posted that I wouldn't delete any more files. Well, I did clean up some registry entries and maybe that's what you mean by System Restore files. So it's possible they are cleaned up now. But other than that, I haven't touched anything since the kapersky log. But spybot or something detected the antiviirus.exe and killed it itself.

Thanks again for your assistance. -- Mike

Hi Mike, I don't know what to tell you about the email, you will have to make those decisions. Kaspersky does not even tell me they are infected, only suspicious. You may be able to direct McAfee to the location and have it scan, I am not sure.

Instructions start here:
Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
hosts file corrupted !
After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file
(items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from
the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, let's proceed with cleaning like this.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\ <<< Java needs an update, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

3) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

(there was no malware in what we just removed, just debris)

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

If all went well with no issues, you can use this information to clean those infected System Restore files showing in Kaspersky.

Then run a last KOS using these settings:

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here. <<< please do not post a clean scan, just let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks...Phil

Just saw your response. I will execute your instructions as soon as I get home from work tonight. Your help is appreciated so much.

I was following the instructions as closely as I possible could and everything was going well.
When it came to the part to delete my system restore files, the option to delete restore files was not there for me as doumented in the instructions, so I could not complete this task as instructed.

I ran the Kaspersky scan and it found 2 viruses, one in my Eudora in-box and in two system restore files. I googled system restore and on bleeping computer.com found instructions on how to delete system restore files for XP. I followed those instructions and feel they are gone now. I should probably create a restore point now. My system restore is turned off currently. I save the kapersky logs but maybe I should run again tomorrow to show that the restore points are gone. Also, I'd rather send the logs on the in.mbx to you privately as it has email addresses in the log. It will show you why I can't pinpoint the email it doesn't like.

Would you like me to run another kapersky log tomorrow or post what I have now?

Thanks,

Mike

Hello Phil:

Here's where I am:

I ran the Kaspersky scan again overnight. It found 1 virus and 39 suspicious objects, all in my Eudora in.mbx. I'm not overly concerned about this. This is more of an archive. I don't use Eudura anymore. The logs are not helpful in pinpointing the emails it doesn't like. I saved the last scan and I could send the scan to you if you'd like to see what I mean.

So I did get rid of the bad system restore files. This morning, I turned my System Retore back on (turning it off purged the old system files).

My system seems to be fine, but I have not been surfing the Internet or trying out my browser a lot because I'm afraid to without your blessing. Plus, tea timer has not been turned on again. I'm waiting for your advice on that.

Another question: When this virus first hit hard, it created a tool bar in my browser and a bunch of other helper junk. I disabled almost all of my IE add-on/helper stuff because I couldn't be sure what was part of the infection and what was legit. Do you think it is safe to enable all of my helper/add-on stuff again?

Another question: In addition to Spybot and McAffee, I have Spy Doctor. Spy Doctor could not detect most of this nasty, and certainly could do nothing to get rid of it. Their "support" didn't respond to my requests. In your opinion, is it worth paying 30 bucks a year to subscribe to this software with no support? I'm inclined to unsubscribe and delete it off my system. Would I be OK just running Spybot? Right now I have two anti-malware programs running, Spybot and Spy Doctor. I didn't have Spybot when I got the virus. I downloaded it afterward. I used to have Spybot, but when I upgraded to the new version of Mcaffee, it wouldn't load. Their support people told me to remove Spybot, so I did. It still wouldn't load. I figured out that it wouldn't load because I had a firewall. When I unchecked downloading the mcaffee firewall, it upgraded with no problem. Should I get rid of Spy Doctor and stick with Spybot?

I'm awaiting your further evaluation and instructions.

Thanks once again. -- Mike

Hi Mike, I have no need to see those emails, you know they are there, that is good enough for me.

I am going to post links from experts in malware removal/security, once you have reviewed that information(they will duplicate each others suggestions) if you have questions at that point, post them.

The original Kaspersky showed only the stored email issue and the infected System Restore files, since you are aware of the email and have reset SR, I have no need to see another KOS result.

TeaTimer will at times hold junk in the memory requiring a batch file be run to clean the junk, but we will not know if it is an issue until you enable TT. (would just be debris in the HJT log)

I suggest you return your computer to normal operation, read what the experts have to say and let me know if you have any issues.

Thanks for all your help. I renabled tea timer and ran a HJT scan. The only thing I saw was this:

O16 - DPF: {17492023-C23A-453E-A040-C7C580BBF700} -
O16 - DPF: {4ED9DDF0-7479-4BBE-9335-5A1EDB1D8A21} -

I'm not sure if that is tea timer debris or what it is. If it's something I should clean up, you'd have to let me know. I'm not going to touch it unless you advise me to clean it up.

Everything seems to be fine and I'm not experiencing any symptions (have not enabled my browser helpers yet). So I suppose that we are done unless I hear from you.

Thank you thank you thank you. I will be making a donation to the cause and I'm glad you guys are here. I already read one article you advocated and I'll read the others over time to educate myself more.

Thanks again,

Mike

Thanks for the feedback, let's have a look:
http://www.castlecops.com/ActiveX.html <<< tool to check ActiveX

Both items appeared to have issues with missing information, but both are valid and will be replaced by Microsoft and McAfee when needed.

Thanks and safe surfing:eek:
