View Full Version : Ads cover webpages--can't detect or delete

I have linked photos of possible spyware ads that I receive randomly. When viewing webpages on sites with completely different themes (meaning the spyware isn't just related to certain categories like shopping, porn, etc.), this advertisement pops up about 2-5 seconds after the page loads, blocking the actual webpage. There is a link at the top-right to "skip this advertisement" but it's just really annoying to have it constantly come up. I have scanned with latest version and updates of Spybot as well as Ad-Aware and neither have detected anything. Any ideas of what this is or how to get rid of it?

Here are the screen shots:

As you can see from the pictures, the spyware or whatever it is works in both IE and Firefox.

I have scanned with Kaspersky Online Scanner; here are the results:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do. Please complete the instructions in the posted order.

Not a lot showing in the HJT log so we may have to work on this one a little. Kaspersky is showing this:
C:\WINDOWS\hostctrl.dll <<< it is nasty and no doubt part at least of the problem.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/hostctrl.dll-20328.html
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=hostctrl.dll&btnG=Google+Search

I have a tool that will address that trojan, but let's try this first. Since this is a backdoor trojan, you should read this information: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

Some research first:
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Please follow these instructions:

1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

3) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\ <<< Update Java, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

4) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ <<< delete the contents of that folder in red
http://ict.cas.psu.edu/training/howto/util/removespybot.htm#1

5) C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\ <<< clean the Java cache
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/virusproblem/howtoclean/cleanjavacache.shtml

6) C:\WINDOWS\hostctrl.dll <<< navigate to this file and delete it. If it gives you trouble, use this tool and instructions.
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb

Restart and post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix and any comments you think will help.

Thanks

Ok I followed all of your instructions in order and was able to successfully delete (and shred) the hostctrl.dll file. I know this wasn't everything because the Kaspersky report showed about 5 viruses and 12 infected objects. What else should I do? Should I just scan my computer with my McAfee and delete whatever it finds?

Here's my rapport.txt file:

I know this wasn't everything because the Kaspersky report showed about 5 viruses and 12 infected objects
Patience...all but two of those were in the infected Java cache and Spybot S&D Recovery folder I had you clean already. The other two...one you just deleted, the other is a System Restore file which we will clean when everything else in done.

Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
hosts file corrupted !
After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file
(items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from
the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Thanks

How is this computer running now? Let's clean like this:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(I have no idea why this is like this? I assume you were trying to do something with McAfee: http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/detail.php?id=4540 )

O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [DelayShred] "c:\program files\mcafee\mshr\ShrCL.EXE" /P7 /q C:\DOCUME~1\Chris\LOCALS~1\Temp\~nsu.tmp\Au_.SH! C:\DOCUME~1\Chris\LOCALS~1\Temp\~nsu.SH! I can only find the O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [DelayShred] "c:\program files\mcafee\mshr\ShrCL.EXE" /P7 /q. I cannot find any of the others. I did a scan (I saved the file just so you can see what I did find and possibly point out what I'm missing. I can't find anything after the mcafee that you pointed out. Also, what did you mean when you said "(I have no idea why this is like this? I assume you were trying to do something with McAfee: http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/detail.php?id=4540 )"?

Finished all steps. Should I scan with anything else (McAfee, ATF-Cleaner, Smitfraud, HJT, etc)? I just want to be sure that my computer is free of whatever it was infected with. Thank you for your help.

1) McAfee: I would scan with it according to what Tech Support suggests. It would be wise to update and scan with it now to make sure all is working as it should be, malware will often cause problems with the resident AV program. If you have any issues, contact McAfee.

2) ATF-Cleaner: Here is a good tutorial.

3) Smitfraudfix should no longer be on your computer.

4) HJT: a diagnostic tool used normally in conjunction with a trained helper, but there is nothing stopping you from learning about it.
