Something is not right... Something out of place. I use Verizon DSL with the Westell 6100 model. I have horrible laggy speeds, which compared is similar to dial-up. In addition I have several questions about the process "alg.exe". Why is this process running? I don't share a internet connection and Windows Firewall is disabled. People on other forums told that it was unnecessary. I found several of these "alg" files in the I368 folder and in the servicepack folders. I bewildered! People told me that after terminating the process alg.exe, their internet connection worked fine.

I use a Windows XP Home SP2.

Why in the world is ctfmon.exe running? I run Windows XP Home SP2, without any Office programs (Microsoft). I was told it was a language bar or something... >.> I'm frustrated and tired. I currently have it disabled with WinPatrol. Help?

The Application Layer Gateway Service is a subcomponent of the Windows networking subsystem. It provides support for plug-ins that allow network protocols to pass through the firewall and work behind Internet connection sharing. Application Layer Gateway (ALG) plug-ins can open ports and change data that is embedded in packets, such as ports and IP addresses. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the only network protocol that has a plug-in included with Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.
The ALG FTP plug-in is designed to support active FTP sessions through the Network Address Translation (NAT) engine that is included with Windows. To do this, the ALG FTP plug-in redirects all traffic that passes through the NAT and that is destined for port 21 to a private listening port in the 3000-5000 range on the loopback adapter. The ALG FTP plug-in then monitors/updates traffic on the FTP control channel so that the FTP plug-in can plumb port mappings through the NAT for the FTP data channels. The FTP plug-in will also update ports in the FTP control channel stream.
If the Application Layer Gateway Service stops, network connectivity for the referenced protocols will be unavailable and adversely affect the network. For example, if you disable this service the Windows Messenger and MSNŽ Messenger instant messaging applications will fail.

It's normal to have ctfmon.exe on startup when you have Internet Explorer 7.

I'm just not getting that "768 kbps" for my Internet connection. But, thank you for your help about the processes. I'll let alg.exe run as it is, and I have ctfmon.exe disabled as it is unnecessary. :red: Yet, I have contacted Verizon several times and the "advices" they gave me were to clear my temp., cookies, and cache plus the prefetch folder. I found that totally futile, because I have attempted that countless times with CCleaner. I did not clear the prefetch folder for that it would cripple my program loading time. Verizon told me that I was getting a good signal on my phone jack... yet I think it is a faulty modem or just poor network configurations.

>The significance note is that I receive max speeds only during late night and early morning around 11pm> or so. Is it network congestion? My neighborhood does not have residental DSL. Oh yikes. How do I download SP3 with this connection. Wikipedia takes 15 minutes to load half page >.>. Thanks.

Btw, I'm spyware free.
