I am having problem with some malware that keeps installing the Core.cache.dsk file on restart. It opens IE to full windows to advertising sites and infects the computer with other different trojans. I can remove all the other trojans but Core.cache.dsk keeps coming back.

Here is the HJT info.

You and Windows, a joint effort >>> post #4

Update Your Windows XP.
You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP.
Before attempting to remove malware, it is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a.
Get SP1a here : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx
You should also get SP2, but NOT NOW, rather only after your machine is clean.
After updating your Windows to SP1a, post a new HijackThis log please, using the Post Reply button.

Thanks

Sorry about that, I thought I had sp1 because windows update doesn't seem to give you the choice to just do a sp1 upgrade. Anyway, here is the HJT files after the upgrade.

Thanks for returning your updated information. While you should not do so when you are infected, I suggest you update to SP#2 as soon as possible after you are clean.

Please read this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=5609
You get to make that call but I would not have it running on a computer I own.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Tutorial if needed:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

elminster

Thanks for the feedback, your HJT log looks fine. Before the final KOS, you need to read this information.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.

Thanks

Thanks for that feedback, remove combofix and the C:\qoobox\quarantine\ folder from your computer and post a last Kaspersky online scan to be sure we missed nothing. If it is clean, no need to post it.
I will post this information for you now so you can benefit from it.

Good morning and thanks for the scan report.

1) One is in the Recycle Bin on your Desktop, right click the Bin and click empty Recycle Bin then Yes.

2) One is an infected email in red
C:\Documents and Settings\Computerone\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{3244DD37-A83C-481E-BFD3-47956C63881A}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Drafts.dbx/[From "coastal" <elminster@coastalnet.com>][Date Tue, 4 Feb 2003 09:03:00 -0500]/2002 ------> Virus.MSWord.Ethan

Restart the computer

3) Balance are all infected System Restore files, clean those like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run a new KOS to make sure you removed them, no need to post a clean scan.

Safe surfing...Phil:)
