Hi Everybody

Am new to the forum , However, a lonnng time Spybot S&D user and enjoy the program.... have been for years now .

I have a few issues that I need some assistance with , Thanks in advance for your input/advice.

OK ... Here it goes ...

(1) I am running W/98SE , DELL puter ... yessss I am still running 98SE , However, on just one puter ... have 2 others ... New HP's which have the Windows Vista Home Premium OS , my prob is with the puter that runs 98SE ...
I upgraded to version 1.52 on the puter which runs 98SE and the other puters are new HP's so I installed 1.52 on them as well with no probs , However, on the 98SE the program often crashes when I attempt to open and run it , However, it does run after a fresh boot ... when I get it to run I can do everything but immunize because the immunize requires Administrators rights and of course on the W/98SE OS there are none ... the Administrators Rights is a new Vista thing ...

**First question is how can I immunize in version 1.52 on 98SE and / or get past the Administrators rights thing ??

** (2) Next question is this ...
Somehow even tho I have my puter protected via Spybot and via IE to be unable to hijack and change my pre-set default home page , a very pushy Microsoft "Get it now" page with the URL : http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx , has in fact managed to overpower my settings and my default homepage is now that URL page and I cannot change it back.
When the page noted above was attempting to make the change I got the usual/normal spybot pop up asking if I would allow or Deny the change I clicked DENY and it changed it anyway ???
Odd thing is this ... When I go into tools internet options etc ... and look my preset default homepage URL is STILL listed in that box and not the microsoft URL noted above ???
I have tried re-entering my preset page in IE tools and clicking apply and OK the the spybot page pops up and ask if I will allow the change ... I click Allow and the popup says Registry change allowed , but it does not change back ... I get another smaller pop-up box that says ( trying to remember exactly ... I may not be exact but willl be close ) ... "according to my blacklist rules my change is not allowed "., ??? and the new microsoft page is still there ???

What do I do here ???

(3) I gather that the new spybot S&D version of 1.52 is not fully compatible with W/98SE , therefore is there a way I can uninstall this version 1.52 on the W/98SE puter and go back to version 1.51 which works great on W/98SE and I had no probs with or can I just re-install version 1.51 and overwrite 1.52 ???

OH and 4th and Final ...
Referring back to number 2 up there about the blacklist ... how does one open up this blacklist and view it ... can that be done ???

Again , Thanks for The Input / Advice .

Hello,

1. Similar problems at various points during the scan have been reported on numerous occasions by people running old Windows systems like Windows 98.

The problem seems to be transient in nature and other people seem to have been able to overcome the error by limiting the system resources used by other processes in the system.
In other words, run as little as possible while running the Spybot scan.

Further you can set your virtual memory higher.
Therefore rightclick My Computer on the desktop.
Choose Properties->Advanced->Performance->Settings->Advanced->Virtual Memory->Change.
Please do also have a look at this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_memory

If you only get this error(Text exceeds memo capacity) in older Windows systems while trying to open the "Resident" then please try to rename your "Resident.log" file, e.g. "Resident.old". This error could occur if the log file is growing too big for old Windows operating systems. You can find the file in:

* Windows 95 or 98: C:\\Windows\\Aplication Data\\Spybot - Search & Destroy\\
* Windows ME: C:\\Windows\\All Users\\Application Data\\Spybot - Search & Destroy\\
* Windows NT, 2000 or XP: C:\\Documents and Settings\\All Users\\Application Data\\Spybot - Search & Destroy\\

Please note that the Application Data Folder is hidden. So if you can't find this folder please check your folder properties (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html).

Please delete also your temporary files.
Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:

* Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
* Click the "Delete Cookies" button
* Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
* When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content",
click OK

Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have
Firefox installed):

* Go to Tools > Options.
* Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
* Click the Clear button located to the right of each option
(History, Cookies, Cache).
* Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing
by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the
information.

Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

* Go to start > run and type: *cleanmgr* and click ok.
* Let it scan your system for files to remove.
* Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle
Bin are the only things checked.
* Press OK to remove them.

It should also help to deactivate the scanning for usage tracks.
Please run Spybot-S&D and switch to "Advanced mode" via the menu bar item "Mode". Now select "Settings" --> "File Sets" in the navigation bar on the left. The checkboxes in front of "Usage tracking" and "tracks.uti" have to be unticked if you do not want to find usage tracks anymore.

Immunization:
Spybot-S&D might not have enough permissions to fully immunize all user accounts.

As a current solution you can try to "Undo" the Immunisation. Now the bad products are allowed.
Then "Immunize" again. This should solve the problem for now.

Some more information is available in our forum:
Immunization (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=117162&posted=1#post117162)
Immunization Problems (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=78)

Another thing though is that immunization only works properly while your browser is closed, since otherwise your browser will overwrite immunization from time to time from the settings it loaded when it was started.

2. This seems to be a problem with the Windows Messenger (MSN messenger).

Perhaps it helps if you change your starting page in Spybot Search and Destroy and disable the TeaTimer before.

You can disable TeaTimer as follows:
- Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Resident.
- Uncheck the following: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) Active.

Change your start page: Please run Spybot-S&D. Please select "Tools" --> "Browser pages" in the left bar.
There, please search for the entry with the unwanted starting pages.
Mark it and click "Change" (in the bar at the top).
Then type your wanted starting page like www.google.de or perhaps about:blank.
Now go to 'Tools'->'IE Tweaks'. There you'll see a group of Recommended miscellaneous locks.
Untick the checkboxes in front of both Lock IE... options.
You may need to close all Explorer windows, and maybe even restart Windows before these changes take place.

If this does not help i would contact the MSN support or uninstall the MSN Messenger.

Otherwise this can also be caused by Zone Alarm (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...em&btnG=Search).
Just about anytime you mention Zone Alarm and home page, Google will give you information.
If you are using the free version the only way to fix this is to uninstall ZA, change the home page and reinstall ZA. If you pay for the software, you should contact them with your feeling about the issue.
I am guessing it is going to exist until ZA gets around to fixing it and updating.
I also heard there is a setting in the paid version for changing the home page.

3. This is the download link (http://www.spybotupdates.com/files/spybotsd15.exe) for the old version 1.5.
You should uninstall (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/uninstall.html) the current version before.

4. Please right-click the Resident icon in the system tray "Spybot S&D resident" and select "Settings". There you will find 4 lists for remembered decisions (allowed/denied processes and registry changes). In order to remove an entry just click on the cross next to it. TeaTimer will then "forget" this decision and you will be asked again the next time.

Best regards
Sandra

Thank you for the reply and information ...

I am going to address number 1 referencing the not being able to immunize and what I found out that works for me on the W/98SE puter and I actually ran across this advice / information in another post here in the forum in another section .
I am not sure why it works but it does ...
I ran the immunize while NOT connected to the internet ... in the offline mode ... that's the answer ... I did that Last nite and again today and this is what worked .

The rest of the information provided to me I will try now and update accordingly .

Thanks again.
