My computer was infected with a trojan virous. After a extensive fix, the problems are "almost" all gone.

When I disabled Symantec NIS 2007 in order to uninstall it then load NIS 2008 (a straightforward upgrade was not working), this small windows of "no protection" must have activated a sleeping trojan. After trying everything imaginable, I ended up reloading the OS (XP Pro Media Edition 2004, SP2).

Now back to almost normal, I decided to load NIS 2008 and your Spybot S&D package. NIS 2008 runs without interferring witht he system perfromance. It is scheduled for full scans at night when I am not using the computer. This seems to be working well.

Now I also loaded your Spybot S&D. I have the settings set for "no automation" for start-up. However here is the problem. I cannot use my system for the first 6-8 minutes after each reboot or start-up. There is one of your programs called "Resident IE" or Resident something (I may have the name wrong) running near my clock in the Task Bar. I want to shut everything down unless I tell it to run in the scheduler. If I go into this Resident program and DISABLE it, the next reboot brings it back. I want to have the program run at night time when I am not using it.

This 6-8 minute delay is annoying. At my office, our IT staff use your S&D program in the PC image; these PC's boot up just fine. I validated the office settings and they are the same as my home PC: all default except "no automation." What do you suggest?

Are you sure? Your software is not detecting any problems. It has run through full scans and not detected anything. The problem appears that at every start-up, the S&D software is starting up even though I tell it "no automation" in the settings. djm

first of all, the thing next to the clock is called teatimer. :)
Spybot's resident protection. If you do not want this protection, open spybot, click mode-advanced mode. Click yes. Click settings found on the left side of the spybot program. Click resident. Uncheck-teatimer resident protection over all systems active. This will keep the system from running system protector. (spybot sd resident) Since you seem to not have any understanding what this is, here is some information on it:

Please read this information about TeaTimer:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/33.html
and
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/34.html

If you surf the web and without any user interaction the teatimer pops up and warns about a registry change it is better to "deny", but if you install something by yourself it is OK to "allow" and remember the change. Teatimer is a program designed to help protect your computer from spyware and to protect your Internet browsers from being compromised. It monitors any changes to your computer, such as installing a program, or making a major system change. It will ask to deny or allow the change that you have made. It is purely optional. You installed it by checking the teatimer option when installing spybot. It is purely your choice. Your system, however, is much more protected when teatimer-(spybot sd resident) is active. I will be referring (spybot sd resident) as teatimer for now on.

IMMUNIZE FEATURE FOUND IN SPYBOT:
The immunize feature within spybot blocks bad web sites known to cause infection to the computer that visits the site. It also helps block images, cookies, any "bad things" that can cause security issues on your computer.

SCHEDULING:
You cannot schedule "teatimer" to run at night because it is a active resident that protects your computer from spyware all the time. You can however, schedule a spybot scan to run at a specific time. Click settings-scheduler-click add.
Select the times you wish to let spybot run and what days. etc.

YOUR STARTUP ISSUE:
Teatimer should not be causing that much of a slow down at start-up. There is another thread here with someone having issues with teatimer causing a slow startup.
The thread is located here :

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=25185

You might have other security software that is incompatible with teatimer resident protection. Please read all threads that i posted and all information found on the links i have provided.
I suggest that any security program that you install, you should read all frequently asked questions and use the tutorials. :) Thank you and please post back and let me know if you have any more questions. :)
