View Full Version : Random Internet Pop-ups+ Slow Performance

MattMeistro911
2008-03-20, 23:04
This started happening about 2 weeks ago. I'm browsing in Mozilla Firefox and pop-ups usually happen with IE7 and sometimes Firefox. Popups only occur if I'm browsing the internet, but overall performance has decreased drastically and the CPU Usage spikes to 100% for 5 seconds as the pop-up appears.

Also I have run Spybot often, it detects a couple of things each time(always cookies). I have AVG do a scan every night and it comes up with 1 or 2 threats. But after my system is "cleaned" the virus is still not gone.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

You have several nasty infections, see this one:
C:\Aaron's Music\Limewire Music\(New Release) oh, it is love 05.wma ------> Trojan-Downloader.WMA.Wimad.d
http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=Trojan-Downloader.WMA.Wimad.d&threatid=75949
Are you sure about where you download your music and your safety proceedures??
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282
http://www.nutnworks.com/SafeHex/file_sharing.htm

I need the header you cut off of the KOS, please do not post the complete scan again, just the header down to here:
C:\Aaron's Music\Limewire Music\(New Release) oh, it is love 05.wma Infected:
When you copy/paste from notepad always use: Edit > Selet All to highlite the complete information.

You have several infections I can see, if you wish to try to clean this, follow the instructions carefully.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log, a new HJT log, and the header from the KOS.

Tutorial if needed:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Limewire's been on my computer for years but hasn't been used since 2 or 3 years ago. Now I use utorrent and try to download from safe sources.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Let's proceed like this:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

(wait until you finish to post the reports and logs)

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Usmygs] "C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew Powell\My Documents\??sembly\m?config.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [nvcoi] C:\Program Files\nvcoi\nvcoi.exe
(SDFix may remove this item)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew Powell\My Documents\??sembly\ <<< delete that folder and contents

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the report from SDFix, a new HJT log and some feedback. How is the computer running?

Thanks

The assembly folder wasn't there, I remember deleting it a couple of days ago. The computer is running back to normal it seems. I've only been using it while troubleshooting but I haven't gotten any pop-ups or performance spikes, and things are loading faster.

Sounds good:bigthumb: the HJT log is clean of malware. Delete SDFix, combofix, the C:\qoobox\quarantine\ folder and make sure to empty the Recycle Bin on your Desktop.
Restart the computer and run a new Kaspersky Online Scan to make sure we did not miss any of the junk. Please use these settings:

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:

* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:

I did all of that and scanned again. 4 viruses were found but they are all in C:\RECYCLER

I emptied the recycle bin on the desktop already and when I view the RECYCLER folder no files are shown. How do I get rid of them?

I have only one, but if I remember correctly, when there is a S-1-5-21-3755911061-1286710541-279945468-500 number it is indicative of multiple users and multiple Recycle Bins.

I've checked all the recycle bins on all usernames (there are 5), and none of them contained those files. Would it be harmful to leave them there?

No...but you really should know how to delete the junk on your computer. I also should see HJT logs from each of those users to be safe.

Here's the username I use (the rest of the usernames I never use) :
