Hi
I have run spybot and rebooted several times but can't clear 6 reported problems. I can't do much online because of all the windows popping up. I've checked for latest download for spybot, and I have got the hijackthis log

hi
Welcome,
Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

Please download ewido anti malware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a free version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/)

Once the updates are installed do the following:

reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

then launch ewido:

Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Close ewido security suite.

reboot back to normal mode, post the ewido report and a log from a fresh hjt scan

I couldn't log on in safe mode it wouldn't accept my username/password
so ran ewido anyway, it found and fixed 132 problems. Then I ran spybot just to see, but it still found about the same half dozen problems - surfsidekick, network monitor, command. So anyway here is the hijacklog as well. The good thing is that at least now I can shutdown - there has to be some good this laptop is taking over my life!!

Hi
Thanks for your help.
I did the hijack run and here is the log. I also ran spybot and it is still finding problems, here is the log file for that too. It is much better - no windows popping up, but it does take a long time to respond after it loads windows.

hi

rescan with spybot, allow it to fix all red entries

reboot

go to Panda ActiveScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm)

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
Enter your Country
Enter your State/Province
Enter your e-mail address and click send
Select either Home User or Company
Click the big Scan Now button

If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Open HiJackThis
Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right

Copy and paste this in: RpcSssvc
Click "ok", then reboot

HiJackThis wouldn't delete the service because it 'is enabled and/or running' It suggested using HiJackThis or the services.msc. So I did a HiJackThis scan and checked 023 - Remote Procedure Call, did a 'fix checked' and rescanned and it was still there. so I looked in the Admin - services window and I have 3 entries for RPC: endpointmapper - started - auto; RPC locator manages service database - - manual; RPC service says that COM and RPC won't function if this is stopped - - automatic;

So I read HiJackThis further, on the info for selected item and it seemed to say it had disabled the service and needed a reboot, so I did that, but it is still there...?

Run this registry script, which forces Windows to show so called "superhidden" files:
Copy the contents of the Quote box to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as Unhide.reg (make sure to save as type: "All Files")

Doubleclick Unhide.reg, and answer 'yes' when prompted to add its contents to the Registry, then restart your computer.

This is only for XP or 2000 systems

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"SearchSystemDirs"=dword:00000001
"SearchHidden"=dword:00000001
"IncludeSubFolders"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
"ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001

then try again

Here is the log file, the laptop seems to work OK now, altho it seems to hang for a bit starting up. I have just yesterday updated spybot and run it and it found a couple of problems that it fixed.

Thanks for your patience...!

hi

were those items listed in red ?

there are a lot of applications and services autostarting, so that could be the reason of slowness
also ewido guard can sometimes cause slowdowns

looks clean :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial63.html)

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict405.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html)

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

IE/Spyad (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)
