Hi all

My computer over the past few months has started to run really slow on start up. I have vasts amount of memory left and i dont run complex programs or games which require vast sums of memory

The problem is the time it takes my computer to boot up. Im not joking when i say it takes almost 5 minutes for explorer to boot up...its very annoying.

AVG prompted me to scan my computer which is what i done and it flashed up two problems

• trackingcookie.doubleclick
• trackingcookie.real

Could these be the problems behind the machine running slow

Hi Andy, I will try to help with your computer issues, but I will need some information first. Let me say that tracking cookies are a part of surfing, but you can block them if you wish. Just be careful not to block cookies you may need for certain security sites and passwords.

You are running AVG8 which I am not familiar with (I run AVG free 7.5)
Is this the program you are running? See the link:

The reason I need to know is this program provides:

Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Spam, LinkScanner & Firewall

Which would mean AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 is not needed and it uses a lot of resources and will slow your computer. If you are running the version I showed you, then start by uninstalling AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.
If AVG8 is supplying you with a firewall then make sure the Windows firewall in your Security Center is disabled.
You will also have no use for the Zone Alarm firewall you are running. Let me know exactly what AVG8 is providing.

Let's do a little cleaning and you can get back with the information I requested.

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\ <<< update your Java program

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall MyWebSearch and any other program you know does not belong there.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\MYWEBSEARCH~1\ <<< delete that folder and contents

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log and the information I requested.

Excellent advice, My machine has loaded up a lot quicker. I have uninstalled Zone Alarm and AVG 7.5 But sadly AVG 8 doesn't seem to have a firewall built in so im currently using the windows firewall, is that good enough?

Hi Andy, most folks who are knowledgeable do not consider the Windows Firewall adequate. I run Zone Alarm myself, but it keeps getting bigger and bigger and I am considering changing. They also started playing these games:

If you want a good second opinion, give this tool a run:

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
