I think I know where I got infected from despite having Spybot S&D as well as avast resident and integrity client firewall running constantly, downloaded a torrent file the other day. Anyhow, have tried and tried to clean using Spybot as well as CCCleaner to clean registry post Spybot but keep getting barraged not so much by popups (think popupblocker and recently, post infection, noscript install help) but computer is running ridiculously slower, spybot is always showing registry changes and I'm afraid I might get my banking/gaming/personal information keylogged.

I forgot to mention that whenever I run Avast it has yet to spot anything--just tracking cookies. I did run spybot in safe mode before the hijackthis and virus scan and it showed nothing but in normal boot I've already been prompted for a few registry changes and have had a few pop ups. The reason why I posted about potential ivy trojan is because I've had a few in the past few days wherein firefox stays open in the task manager after being closed and a googling of that said possibly poison ivy trojan : / anyhow. Preemptive thanks : )

Still having issues with popups and sluggish pc performance. Registry also constantly trying to be changed by random *.dlls and browserhelper object. Currently redownloading java as that appears to be a future preventive measure listed on some other threads. Have downloaded VundoFix Combofix and such as well--should I just run these with teatimer disabled?

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

All I am seeing is the Vundo infection, let's try to remove it and see what happens, here is a little information about the junk if you are interested.
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/search.aspx?q=winfixer+msn

These lowlifes are hiding the infection from HJT, please return here:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< rename HJT.exe, call it aleksai.exe that will work and we may see the infection after a reboot.

There is a very good chance this is malware:
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft M.S.N. Services] msnmm.exe
Use one or more of these free scans to find out and post the results:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

The file may be hidden:

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Download VundoFix" to your Desktop

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

Follow these directions starting at: Normal Usage for Removal
http://vundofix.atribune.org/

Post information about the file, the Vundofix.txt and a new HJT log
Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

Thanks...Phil

Hey Phil,

First, thanks!

Second: I could not find the msnmm.exe file you referred to--I have it disabled in startup under msconfig so I don't know why its running--it looked suspicious to me as well. Since I don't know where it is though, did a windows search with system files/hidden files enabled as search paramaters (also have windows to show me hidden files) and still no dice. : /

I also had a question that may just be software clashes or something but whenever I shutdown I get a dwwin.exe error cause it could not initialize a *dll (I think anyway, it flashes and gets taken up by windows shutdown screen). I notice that when I close my Logitech Setpoint, the dwwin.exe error doesn't happen but then I get an XPCOM Event Receiver error, any clues?

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. As long as this junk is on your computer you will get error messages. It is important that you post the error messages "word for word". I did not see evidence of Selective Startup running the first HJT log? Return to normal mode in System Configuration Utility if you have anything turned off so I can see everything. You can return to SS once we finish. Let's wait until Vundo has been removed to see if the symptoms stop.

msnmm.exe <<< did you search for this file with Search Companion once you enabled all files and folder? See this link:
http://forums.techguy.org/malware-removal-hijackthis-logs/446560-solved-notnotspy-exe-won-t.html

I notice you have this item disabled?

O2 - BHO: DriveLetterAccess - {5CA3D70E-1895-11CF-8E15-001234567890} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswshx.dll (disabled by BHODemon)

Instructions start here
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Make sure TeaTimer is still disabled

4) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

5) Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the "Select Files" Window opens copy and paste the file/s one at a time in the "File Name:" box and click Open to add them. When then are all added right click the Windows and choose "Select All" then "Fix Vundo".
(new instructions, please let me know if they work right since I have no files to test this)

(file to add)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vturppq.dll

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vturppq.dll <<< make sure that file is gone

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post any information I requested, the Vundofix report, a new HJT log, and any comments you think will help.

Thanks

Phil,

Still can't find msnmm.exe, have tried enabling every file under the sun and even tried typing in the file path into the file scanners you provided and nothing was loading.

As far as the vturppq.dll and the vundofix trick...
First time I tried it, explorer (windows explorer not internet) crashed and so did vundofix, eventually explorer popped back up but by then the whole system had slowed to a crawl. Forced rebooted and tried again, after doubleclicking on the vundofix icon the computer once again froze and had to force reboot. Third time around... did vundofix again, computer didnt freeze but after 30 minutes I closed vundofix. Then ran Hijackthis and atfcleaner. When going back to windows explorer to delete the file it kept saying it was being used by another user or program. Thinking this was ongoing from vundofix but at the same time concerned something else was causing it, booted into safe mode and tried deleting it then, same thing.

I'm no longer seeing any on shutdown errors, thinking it was an issue with setpoint as I just uninstalled it and reinstalled latest version. However, I'm now getting an error every time I start up stating that process could not be initialized because c:/windows/system32/vfhkxgiv.dll could not be found. (Note that I switched to normal startup as you said).

Heres the latest Hijackthis log:

Oh also---I have no clue about the driver letter access being disabled as I said I'm running normal startup and haven't played with startup or services options since. No clue.

One more thing....Is it normal to have two instances of rundll32.exe going at the same time? Can't tell which one is from where but I have one in c:\i386 and one in \windows\system32\. I don't recall ever having two of these running at the same time 0.o. Still no luck removing the dll but have run it through jotti and everyone and their mom says its virtumonde....how do I remove it?

Thanks for the feedback, we will try to work out all these issues before we finish.
It appears something is not working right with Vundo, I need to call your attention to this:
The instructions:

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix. Download VundoFix" to your Desktop
Yet I am seeing Vundofix running from here:
O23 - Service: VundoFix Service (VundoFixSvc) - Atribune.org - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\VundoFixSVC.exe
What I would like you to do is remove Vundofix from your computer and then follow the directions again to download. Be 100% positive when you click this link:
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/VundoFix.exe
that the SAVE IN box at the top of the "SAVE AS" Windows says DESKTOP.

The Vundofix.exe icon must be on your DESKTOP and no where else.

Once you get it here, then do this.
Open a new notepad window
Paste the list of files from the quote box below into the notepad window.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vturppq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vfhkxigu.dll

Save this as vundofix.vft and Save as type "all files".
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Drag vundofix.vft onto the listbox (white box) of VundoFix.
Click the "Fix Vundo" button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions
starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

When you have completed those instructions, post the report from Vundofix. it will be here: Vundofix.txt will be on the C:\

Thanks

Heya Phil,

Thanks for the reply. I deleted Vundofix.exe which was downloaded to and was still sitting on my desktop as well as the vundofixsvc.exe file in the system32 folder. I redownloaded to desktop and the infected computer has now been running vundofix for approximately an hour. I dragged the files from the *.vtf file as you said and all but screen hasn't gone blank and I have yet to get any prompts. Also! C:\WINDOWS\system32\vfhkxigu.dll was not added to the list, even though it was in the *vtf file, I'm guessing this is due to the same reason for the startup error I was getting its been deleted but somehow still being referenced?

anyhow, I see you're online so I'm wondering if and if I do how long I should let vundofix keep sitting on my computer. Note that right now I'm on a different system so not interfering with vundofix.

Hey Phil,

As I stated in the PMs, I have reformatted my computer to original factory settings using the built in Symantec PC Restore. While offline I installed the latest spybot as well as definitions from an external hard drive, I'm switching from Avast to Anti-Vir and using zonealarm for a firewall still. Also downloaded and isntalled spywareblaster for extra protection.

I was wondering if you could recommend any good Registry/Hard drive cleaners--I downloaded CCleaner and Wise Hard Disk Cleaner but I figure if you know anything, freeware :P, thats better, all the merrier.

Thanks again for your input, I know this is a drastic measure for a vundo problem but it allows me make sure I clean out my registry and hard drive for extra crud thats built up over the years.

One brief thing about the registry also, unrelated, but even during the Vundo thing I noticed I had QuickBooks Reminder installed and random AOL files spread on my computer--all remnants of trial software that shipped with the pc. After doing the restore I uninstalled all these again and noticed them on my pc still--is it fine that I manually deleted them using windows explorer and that Wise Hard Disk Cleaner and then cleaned out the registry with CCleaner?

Anyhow, getting to rambling,

Take it easy, thanks again

Use the uninstaller if available in Add Remove programs, if not just navigate to them and delete them.

ATF-Cleaner is a great tool to keep on the Desktop for routine cleaning:

http://www.nutnworks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1925

This is a good freeware tool for registry cleanups, I must take the time to say you should never work in the registry without making a backup first.
