Hi. This morning my computer was attacked by, at last count, 12 instances of spyware. I've run Spybit S&D several times (including at startup in safe mode). According to the log, which is on my infected computer, it removed all but Smitfraud-C. I ran a SmitFraud removal tool. I still can't get the Task Manager to work and the background keeps changing and popups continue. That computer is now offline.

Here is my HJT log. Thanks in advance!

Hi MikeMoran

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- combofix report

I ran ComboFix and upon reboot, I only get a black screen (with working cursor). I tried rebooting into safe mode, black screen, cursor and he safe mode info. I do not have a recovery disk (OEM didn't supply XP disk). This just keeps getting worse!

Hi

Well that isn't a good sign.

Can you get boot menu visible and choose Last Known Good Configuration from it?

MikeMoran
2008-03-24, 14:19
Not sure how to get there.

MikeMoran

Same result, black screen.

Hi

Well then you will need to ask OEM for XP disk.

You should get one when you buy a computer.

If no go, you will have to take computer to shop for repair, I'm afraid.

I appreciate your time and effort.

Hi

There might be a chance do save your computer without a store.

Download this:

http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/rc.iso

Burn it to CD using some program (eg. Nero)

Boot the computer using that CD you just made. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

At boot, you will be prompted with the following options:

A. To setup Windows XP, press Enter.
B. To repair Windows XP installation using recovery console, press R.
