Hey all!

Last night I made the silly mistake of IE6'ing to a site with a malware drive by installer, and am hence now stuck deep in the depths of dispair and general frustration to get rid of all the things it installed.

The infected computer is running Windows 2000 and related software that's already installed is: Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster, HiJackThis, AVG Anti-Spyware. Will gladly download any others on suggestion.

Ad-Aware took care of a heap of minor issues and Spybot cleared out most of the big baddies, but some remain and the reboot scan doesn't work. The ones that still get flagged now (after all the "standard" cleaning) in Spybots scan is:

- Command Service (3 registry keys)
- Malware Alarm (1 registry value)
- Virtumonde (3 registry keys, 1 file)
- Virtumonde.dll (2 registry keys, 1 file)

Spybot S&D of course recommends a reboot scan since it can't clear out the resident stuff, and it does start one up after reboot, which it runs for roughly half an hour up until it "finishes" after 119080 objects, and then it just, well, freezes. The program seems to hang as it becomes completely unresponsive, I've waited it out for over 30 minutes but with no change, then terminated it and proceeded to let windows load. (I've done this three times over btw, no change in result)

One quick note about HiJackThis - it doesn't work now for some reason. As soon as I click any of the "Scan" buttons, the program crashes and takes a nosedive into oblivion.

Any advice whatsoever on how to proceed with this would be greatly appreciated!

I can't really tell which ones of the "non-obvious" entries are bad myself (maybe all of them?) except that the Trusted Zone thing looks awfully strange.

Thank you for responding to this, I was careless enough to get this on my main work station so I'm a little bummed out about the whole thing, especially in case any of them would be keyloggers etc :)

Hi

Well at least no keyloggers in log :)

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- combofix report

Allright, that seemed to work fairly well, ComboFix ran un-interrupted for about 20 mins before finishing.

One note though, it started off by displaying a dialog box titled "Registry Editor", saying: "Cannot import import: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error". Not sure if that matters.

I'll keep the two logs in two separate posts for easy reading, and since my real name also appears in the ComboFix log I replaced it with MYREALNAME. I don't mind telling it to specific people here, I just don't want it spiderable on any public forums :)

Hi

That is fine as long as there are no nasties in your user account :)

Have you set these?

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 66.250.69.1:8888
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.onerateld.com

If not, fix them with HijackThis.

After that:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINNT\17PHolmes572.exe

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Allright, I fixed those 3 entrys with HiJackThis and ran ComboFix with the script :)

As far as anti-virus, I used to run Avast for some time but its resident scanner ended up lagging my computer down horribly so I removed that not too long ago. I guess I can re-install it though.

ComboFix also noted that Windows is a bit low on Registry Space and that it should be increased for better performance, but I'm guessing that might be something I can fix when the malware cleanup is done?

New ComboFix log:

Hi

"As far as anti-virus, I used to run Avast for some time but its resident scanner ended up lagging my computer down horribly so I removed that not too long ago. I guess I can re-install it though."

Yes, you should install some antivirus next.

If avast! was no good for you, you can try AntiVir.

It is even more lightweight.

As for registry thing, this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906952/en-us)
may help.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log after that, please :)

OK, AntiVir installed, rebooted and posting a fresh HJT log below. I never got to the registry thing on the page you linked to, the "workaround" that was necessary before running the hot-fix felt a little over my head at the moment. Hope that part wasn't necessary right now.

Hi

No, it can wait later :)

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Click the Save Report As... button (see red arrow below)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/Kas-SaveReport-1.gif
In the Save as... prompt, select Desktop
In the File name box, name the file KasScan-ddmmyy (or similar)
In the Save as type prompt, select Text file (see below)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/Kas-Savetxt.gif

Hi

Empty this folder:

C:\QooBox\Quarantine

Delete these (unless you are sure that they are harmless):

D:\Design\Web\Work\Redaktionen\RedaktionenSe\www-suspicious\index.php
D:\Design\Web\Work\Redaktionen\Skattetack\www\index-infected.php

Empty Recycle Bin.

Still problems?

At first after a Spybot scan it still listed MalwareAlarm, but then I realized I hadn't rebooted so, one reboot and one Spybot scan later and this poor can appears to be all cleaned out! :)

Thankyou so much for your support, you've been very helpful. I was kind of at my wits end on this one. Much appreciated! :)

Hi

Then you're clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)
2) Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free.html)
3) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
4) Agnitum (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
5) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and save it to your desktop.
Scroll down to where it saysThe Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications..
Click the Download button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide (http://bfccomputers.com/index.php?showtopic=1644)

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide (http://bfccomputers.com/index.php?showtopic=1645)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
