View Full Version : How to escape botnet?

Hello!

I was contacted by my ADSL provider that thousands of spam mails were sent using my account.
Only my father's Win XP PC was used in our home LAN for the last several weeks so I assume his laptop became part of a botnet.

I scanned it with updated versions of Ad-Aware and Spybot (in Windows's safe mode) -> some suspected spyware was discovered and removed, but nothing that (according to a google search) should cause the PC to become a zombie - and nothing of it showed up anymore after repeated scans.

I used Kapersky's online scanner which found many locked objects which I think aren't problems, only this seemed a bit strange:
D:\System Volume Information\_restore{62440FC9-BC48-44B8-B4DB-C0AEF4DF6FCF}\RP193\A0032643.exe/data0011 Infected: not-a-virus:AdTool.Win32.WhenU.a skipped
D:\System Volume Information\_restore{62440FC9-BC48-44B8-B4DB-C0AEF4DF6FCF}\RP193\A0032643.exe NSIS: infected - 1 skipped

I upgraded from AVG free to AVG Internet Security, but even when I set its firewall to "Emergency mode - block all" I sometimes see quite some outgoing and incoming traffic on my network.

What can I do now? Help would by much appreciated.
Here is my hijackthis log.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

HJT can not show everything, the hackers go out of their way to hide from it, that is why we ask for the KOS. The only thing I see is an out of date Java which is dangerous:
C:\Programme\Java\jre1.5.0_06\
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

The two items you showed me from KOS are indications of infected System Restore files, turn it off, restart and turn it back on to clean SR:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

I am not familiar yet with AVG Internet Security though I run AVG antivirus 7.5. I assume it also supplies you with a firewall so you should be able to control what has access to the internet. Internet activity is constant, almost always some valid program asking to access and email programs are checking often. You should be able to see a log with your firewall showing what is accessing the internet (I can with Zone Alarm), I can also set exactly what programs are allowed to access.
Here are a couple of tools to check your ports:
Free Port Scan & Firewall Test
http://www.securitymetrics.com/portscan.adp
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

You may want to post a HJT log and a Kaspersky scan result in a new topic from the other computer in question, if I can do more, let me know.

Thanks

Hello pskelley!

Yes, i read the "before you post" instructions.
I cleaned system restore and updated the java runtime.

Now I also used some rootkit scanners. Blacklight found a hidden file Ismb55.sys which I removed.

GMER found more Ismb55 related things.
On the GMER page it is suggested to send them the logs, which I did, but I don't know if their site is still maintained, so I attach the log here, too.

Do you know if Ismb55 is a rootkit? What would you suggest to do - are there any other forums more specialiced in rootkit removal?

You may want to post a HJT log and a Kaspersky scan result in a new topic from the other computer in question, if I can do more, let me know.

I really have no idea why you posted that information or which computer it applies to.

Do you know if Ismb55 is a rootkit? No and neither does Google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Ismb55+&btnG=Search

If Blacklight said it was and you followed the directions to remove it, it should be gone.

Thanks

I think I now managed to remove the rootkit that caused my problems (I didn't post logs for the other computer beause I saw from the network traffic that only the computer I wrote about in the original post caused the spam-sending problem)

So as documentation for others (because searching for ismb55.sys on google didn't bring any info yet): It is a variant of sysbus32.sys rootkit.

Scanning with Blacklight or RootAlyzer only reveals one hidden file - rename it with Blacklight, restart computer and then delete it. But that doesn't solve the problem yet.

I removed it using GMER: http://www.gmer.net/index.php
Here I found information about sysbus and other instructions how it also can be removed:
