Managed to remove cmdservice with program called ren-cmdservice.
Unfortunatley still getting pop ups.
Spybot does not report anything but ad-aware does but can not remove it.
Going to try ewido in safe mode.

hi

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=7) to your desktop.
Close all windows before continuing.
Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run this program as a task .
You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button , your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button .
You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK .
When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK .
Your computer will then shutdown.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339'. please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32. Directory
http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/images/lib/MSWINSCK.OCX

some instructions for ewido ( just in case )

Please download ewido anti malware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a free version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/)

Once the updates are installed do the following:

reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

then launch ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Close ewido security suite.

reboot back to norma mode, post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt, theewido report and a fresh hijackthis log into this thread using the post reply button

i am afraid that ewido alone can't clean it, but the scan will be usefull because it will get everything else ;)

good luck :bigthumb:

illuka,
Before I read your post I had run ewido in safe mode and cleared about 25 things. The log file just reports - RegQueryValueEx failed, Value: 00000002.
I have a new HJT log posted below.
The good news is all the pop ups have stopped and AD-Aware shows nothing.
Spybot finds nothing too. :)
Will download l2me destroyer incase of future problems.
What does ren-cmdservice do?

Many thanks for your help heres the log from HJT

that batch changes the permissions in the registry so that programs can modify the key

odd look2me seems gone
and the log looks very clean...
can you post a new log after a couple of reboots, to see if it comes back ?

Heres the log file from HJT
I've had a couple of system type error messages but things have been fine. No pop ups at all and all scanners report no problems at all. :D :D

hi

lets do a doublecheck
the infection may leave the registry corrupted:
Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so! This Fix must NOT be run in safe mode for it to work.

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Hi illuka,

Done the above. Do you think there is still a problem my machine seems fine?

Only one problem which I had before cmd service and may have been cause by spyware in the past. I can no longer install software directly from cd drives on my PC, I have to copy them to the HD and run the setup.exe from the HD. If the PC tries to autorun the CD or I click on setup.exe via say the d: drive I get the message or variation of the message -

The procedure entry point GetFileVersionjInfoA could not be loated in the dynamic li library VERSION.dll

The message changes dependent on the CD I am trying to install new or old.
Running windows 2000 Pro 5.00.2195 SP4

Thanks

does it make a difference in the cd thing ?

hi

logs are looking good

i'll check if i can find anything on that error
first i would try updating the drivers of the cd drive

spectrum
2006-03-09, 09:51
Both CD drive used to work fine.
Device drive for CD's is microsoft own - 5.0.2183.1
The drives work fine in every way exept when trying to install from CD disc.
It used to work fine the suspect program or spyware has corrupted reg or dll...tc and this has caused the problem.
Microsoft have this problem listed in KB but don't have a fix...Hmmmm

Thanks for the help.

hi

lets do a test:

can you download and run blacklight?

Download and Save Blacklight (http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml) to your desktop:

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, click > scan then > next

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

spectrum

Downloaded the program onto the desktop, but can not get it to run.
The error it give is F-Secureblacklight was unable to aquire necessary privilleges (see DebugPrivilage).

hi

Please download NTrights.zip (http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/freeatlast/NTrights.zip) by freeatlast.
If you can't access it, download NTrights.zip via here: http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/freeatlast/dumprights.htm
Save it on your desktop.
Unzip/extract it.
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
Open the NTrights-folder
Double click on the Debug.bat file to run it, follow any prompts it asks.

REBOOT

Doubleclick the Debug.bat again after reboot.

It will create a log.
If the log says:
"Granting SeDebugPrivilege to Administrators ... successful", you must be ok and things restored well.

then try blacklight again

hi

run blacklight again

when you get to the second phase of blacklight scan
highlight an item, select rename
then click finish and allow blacklight to reboot the computer

rename these:

C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\sysbus32.sys
C:\WINNT\s

after reboot

click start >run > type cmd
into the cmd window type sc delete sysbus32 and hit enter

update ewido, boot to safe mode
do a full scan with ewido, allowing it to clean infections
save the report
post the ewido report and a fresh hjt log

Hi illuka,

Could not get to delete the file using -
click start >run > type cmd
into the cmd window type sc delete sysbus32 and hit enter

but deleted the file anyway in windows.
Blacklight finds no hidden files now ;-)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial63.html)

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict405.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html)

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

IE/Spyad (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)
