Yikes! My son has downloaded a screensaver only and now I have major problems with an unwanted toolbar (which takes you to www.dns-look-up.com), pop-ups and error messages that ask if I want to keep running scripts on specific pages such as the following:

http://search.uk.miva.com/search/content/implementations/results.asp?affiliateid=3599&resulttype=c2media_popunder&hits=6&contentidentifier

I have tried running my usual spyware programs (Ad-aware 6.0, SpyBot-search and destroy, Windows Defender and SpyWareBlaster) but although they found a few things they have not helped with the problem above. I also tried a program off the net called Xoftspy 4.21. This found lots of malware, adware and DataMiner files and folders and even one Trojan (Trojan/CWS combo) but when I clicked the removal button it said I need to purchase a home licence for $40. Am I being conned? Why didn’t the other programs find all this stuff?
I’m new to the forum and not an expert PC user. I notice people seem to post Hijack files to help with troubleshooting. Do I need to download a piece of software to do this?

I’d be so grateful of any help!

Kind regards

I've put the HJT file in a later post(19:42) with a covering message. Oops! Missed it off this one.

Am I being conned?
Yes...they want your $$ and will find false positives to get it. While there are some good pay for view programs out there, I do not suggest programs that are not freeware.

I do not see anything real terrible, but you have a lot of clutter in the R1/R0 area of the log. I do not know what you use as a home page but you can remove all of those and still set any home page you wish. I suggest you remove them all but click the link to see where they go, keep them if you must, the browser my run a little faster without all of that junk.
Kelly, what I will do is give you a good cleaning and remove what I think should go. We will see at that point how you are running and decide if we should do more. I want to mention:

C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe
This program has been associated with C2 Media/LOP toolbar but can be used safely without sponsors, just want to make you aware of that fact.

This item: C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE well see this >>> http://castlecops.com/startuplist-5306.html If you wish either of the above gone from your computer, since they are optional removals, please let me know.

Please follow the instructions in the posted order, thanks.

1) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(first eight are the optional but suggested)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\EleFun Multimedia\ >>> folder (unless you know it is safe)

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\MYWEBSEARCH~1\ folder (may be gone)

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTING~1\Gabby\APPLICANTIONS~1\IDLERE~1\Download 2.exe >>> folder

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this one with these instuctions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Post a new HJT log along with your feedback and any information I asked for.

Your Java program is outdated, please see the link tashi provided.

Hi pskelley:angel:

I have followed all the instructions carefully and posted another HJT log at the bottom, as requested. Some of the items had disappeared so I presume SpyBot or Ad-aware may have deleted them. The new updated versions found a few hundred items when I ran them (thanks for that!).
I did leave one of the RO logs as it related to Google and I use it as my start-up page. This one:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.google.co.uk/

In relation to the following:
(Next item looks like a LOP leftover, are you sure you do not have the LOP infection?)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {720F5B6A-EA20-F0D5-F8FC-4EF6B4D09B5B} - C:\DOCUME~1\Gabby\APPLIC~1\IDLERE~1\Download 2.exe

Excuse my ignorance! What is a LOP? I hope I don’t have a LOP infection but I really wouldn’t know. This looks like something that one of the kids might have downloaded. They are always chatting on Windows Live Messenger (version 8.0) and regularly download updates and extras but it’s not something I use so I find it difficult to set rules for using it whilst keeping the computer safe from attack.

You also mentioned the following:

C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe
This program has been associated with C2 Media/LOP toolbar…….

I presume this relates to Windows Messenger. You considered this to be an optional removal along with C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE
If I don’t need them, I think I’d prefer to remove them. Do files like these just slow the computer down?

I’ve deleted the following file:
(next item I am unsure of, unless you are very sure it is safe, remove it)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EleFunAnimatedWallpaper] "C:\Program Files\EleFun Multimedia\Silent Lagoon Wallpaper\Silent Lagoon.exe" DO_NOT_START

I recognised this one as the wallpaper that my son downloaded just before all the problems began so I’m optimistic that things will improve without it.

I couldn’t find the following folder:
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTING~1\Gabby\APPLICANTIONS~1\IDLERE~1\Download 2.exe >>> folder

In application data there was a folder called idleremoteflag which contained a download2 file. Is that anything to do with this? Should I leave that alone or delete it?

Finally! Here is my HJT log file. Sorry for so many questions.:)

If I don't mention something you posted it means I agree with what you said or did:bigthumb:

First let me say messengerplus has nothing to do with Microsoft or MSN Instant Messenger/Windows Messenger. Third party software that downloads some rather nasty programs unless the sponsors are rejected when reading the ELUA agreement: http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/pest.aspx?id=453076024

C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE
If I don’t need them, I think I’d prefer to remove them. Do files like these just slow the computer down?If you would reread that information, myself I was more concerned with CastleCops calling it Spyware. It does use resources that are unnecessary, but so do any programs like this: O4 - HKLM\..\Run that does not need to run to keep the computer running or to protect your security.

I recognised this one as the wallpaper that my son downloaded just before all the problems began so I’m optimistic that things will improve without it.One of the fastest ways to get infected, believe me when I say they do not give that junk away, there is a price that will be paid in adware.

In application data there was a folder called idleremoteflag which contained a download2 file. Is that anything to do with this? Should I leave that alone or delete it?If you look at the pathway it definately shows a folder being there, the Download 2.exe should have been in that folder and needs to be deleted. Let me say these are part of a LOP infection as I said. I find it strange that those two items which are part of the infection were downloaded without the LOP toolbar, if the item had been on the computer, you would have known it.

Finally! Here is my HJT log file. Sorry for so many questions.Believe me, it is the one that does not ask questions that worries me.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 23:57:57, on 23/02/2006
I see no malware in this HJT log, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE >>> file and delete the file in red. Watch the spelling carefully.

Download 2.exe >>> file don't forget this one, you said there was no folder but do delete the file.

Safe surfing...Phil:)

Phil

Thanks for all your help. The computer is now running like a dream!

Just one final question:

The ALCMTR file in C:\Windows does not display the suffix .EXE You said watch the spelling carefully so I just wanted to check if this is the one to delete. I did a search on ALCMTR.EXE and it found this file:

ALCMTR.EXE-01A7139B.pf In C:\Windows\Prefetch

Please can you confirm which is the one I should delete?

Thanks once again. A donation is on the way.

Kelly:bigthumb: :) :) :)

Hi Kelly and you are certainly welcome and thanks for your thanks:) it is what I work for. This file: C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE does not always show its' location but in your case it is showing in the HJT log. Since this item is not "malware" but rather a rather stupid attempt to collect information by a "legitimate" business (Realtek Event Monitor) I would rather leave it that create a problem for you. This is very optional, you read the information. If it is appearing in Prefetch, you also have an information link where you cleaned Prefetch last and know by now that everything in Prefetch can be cleaned out at any time. You may see your speed slow a little until Windows repopulates with what it needs to "Prefetch" quickly for you.

Since you had a few nasties, let's make sure your System Restore files are clean: System Restore does not know good from bad, it backs up everything. In case some of the infection got into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, restart your computer and turn it back on.

Thanks for the donation, even though we volunteer our time I am sure management can use all of the $$ they can get, it has to cost plenty to run a website like this one.

Kelly, safe surfing to you and since you mention children, here are a few link that may help:
