Never used a forum before so I am not sure what I should do here. Somehow, while using the computer it got infected with a malware that keeps giving me pop-ups (one red and one blue) saying my computer is infected and takes me to a site that does malware software removal evaluations. A little yellow triangle shows up with my other icons in the tool bar and pops up and says the same thing. I also had (but is gone now as a result after running Smitfraud remover by S!R!.URZ) had a blue screen that changed my wallpaper and gave me a message saying that I was infected and needed to perform a complete scan. I have Symantec Corporate AntiVirus and run Spybot Search and Destroy all the time. This just happened recently (maybe 2-3 days ago). I ran Symantec atleast twice, Spybot 3 or 4 times and also Trend Micro Housecall 3 or 4 times and still am having problems. I have followed the directions on your " Before you post" and have the two logs but they exceed the number of characters allowed so I eliminated any spaces I could:

Left the Trend Micro Hijackthis window open, as instructions weren't clear as to whether to close it or not or if actions that will need to be taken once reply is received will require this window remains open. Haven't had any previous problems with virus infections prior to this. Must have been very careful or lucky, not sure which. Usually all my computer work is done by my administrator (an IT pro) at home, but I am out of the state and need help. He is the one who recommended Spybot, which I really like. It is especially easy to use. Don't know what I need to do now. Please advise.

Thanks for the help in advance,
Moe

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
I can not identify some of the junk, if you still need help, read the directions and follow them, including this one:

HiJackThis log - Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into your (Click --> ) own new topic

Once you post the correct HJT log, while you wait for my response, address these KOS issues:

(FROM FIRST POST - to which you are replying:) I have Symantec Corporate AntiVirus and run Spybot Search and Destroy all the time. This just happened recently (maybe 2-3 days ago). I ran Symantec at least twice, Spybot 3 or 4 times and also Trend Micro Housecall 3 or 4 times and still am having problems.

I have followed the directions on your " Before you post" and had the two logs but they exceed the number of characters allowed by over 8,000 so I eliminated any spaces I could to shorten it

NEW INFO: At this point, I accidentally hit send AND failed to incorporate the latest revisions which included: and I am still 6633 characters over. I can eliminate one report and attach a text file if you want. Not sure what to do next so I left in this file (Kaspersky Scan) and eliminated the hijackthis which I attached as a text file.

The contents of that file are as follows:

Not sure what you mean by: "If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do," as I think I already did that according to my previous post. Do I need to do it over? Don't mean to be dense, but I want to make sure I don't screw this up.

After I send this, I will take care of the issues you mentioned. Sorry if I am confused as I don't usually use forums and have never had any problems like this before.

Thanks for the help.
Moe

Read and follow the directions I post and you will have not problems.

I need to take a look with the newest version of Smitfraudfix before we proceed. This is why I asked you to remove any tools you used, they would be out of date.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

(Must be version Version 2.309 or newer)

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post only the C:\rapport.txt

(do not post anything I do not request unless they are comments you think will help)

Thanks

Deleted the files you indicated in your previous post. Can I close Trend Micro Hijackthis window? Should I quit SmitFraudFix?

Thanks,

HJT can be closed once you have created the HJT log I request and it will not be used until I ask for a new HJT log.

Smitfraudfix will close itself, but you are going to use it in this next step. Read and follow the directions carefully.

Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
hosts file corrupted !
After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file
(items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from
the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log (run after Smitfraudfix).

Thanks

Still getting a little pop-up from the task bar and another that looks like the MS Installation Wizard at this point. Haven't seen red or blue one yet, but it hasn't been that long. Forgot to put this info in last post.

Thanks for the HJT log, continue like this.

1) Can you assure me this is a valid program:
C:\Program Files\eMail ID\OEAddOn\OEdmn_3.exe

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

3) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

4) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

5) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O21 - SSODL: vbgtorfd - {E3B30322-F8D4-4E0E-B29F-636069863D11} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ilenwpir\ <<< delete that folder and contents

C:\WINDOWS\system32\fwxgzyty.exe <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\glsxkbsn.exe <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qwam.dll <<< delete that file

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log and tell me how the computer is running.

Thanks

Not sure about e-mail file. Trend Mirco has an e-mail secure-check that verifies that the sender is valid and not someone phishing. That could be it, but if you want it gone, let me know. Walking out the door, will be back shortly and will follow instructions.

Thanks again,
Moe

No Moe, it may very well be valid and it is hard for the data bases to keep up with all of the changes. It is just that it is the first time I have seen it. You can scan that file to be sure it is safe here: http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Thanks...Phil

Phil,
Used link and checked file; all 21 programs passed it as OK, so I guess it is valid. Printed instructions and will proceed to follow. Will post log when completed.

Thanks,

Phil,
Followed directions until I get to deleting files and it won't let me delete: C:\WINDOWS\system32\qwam.dll <<< delete that file

Gives me a message saying file can't be delted as it is in use by another person or program. Close any programs trying to use this file and try again.

Stopped at this point to get clarification. Then I will run ATF Cleaner. Hope that is the right thing to do.

Well Moe, that file is bad and it must be deleted. Try booting into safe mode and deleting it there when it will not be running.
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/safemode/

You can also try this:
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\qwam.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

Thanks

Used hijackthis to delete qwam.dll. Rebooted and checked to verify that file was actually gone and it was. Used ATF Cleaner to delete info requested. Rebooted again.

And by the way every time I reboot I get an End Program dialog box that says hpcmpmgr.exe in not responding - click to end now. Why is that? Is that related to all this other crap?

After second reboot, ran HJT and log is as follows:

Can't say how computer is running yet, as this is the only thing I have done with it. Am I done (clean) now?

Thanks again for all the help and patience in dealing with this. I don't understand why people create these things in the first place.

Can't say for sure, but things seem to be running better. I am running SpyBot again to make sure there are no more virus files found. Turned TeaTime back on and reset Folder Options, View Files back to recommended. No pup-ups yet, but I won't be relieved until you tell me everything is OK with the last log I sent you.

Thanks again for all the help. When I get back home (to Ohio from Florida) I will make a donation.

Thanks for returning your information, if you receive error messages, please post them word for word, I cannot research them otherwise.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 7:27:57 PM, on 3/30/2008

C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe <<< this is probably the source of the error message and HP has posted instructions for fixing the issue:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=oj-22424-5

Use HJT to remove this items:
O21 - SSODL: JEjSHxOa - {50FD2354-FA57-89FE-1125-A2E87214947C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\qwam.dll (file missing)
(TT will probably need to be off)

We have some infected System Restore files to clean, run a last KOS so we can be sure nothing else is hiding. Remove Smitfraudfix from your computer and also delete this leftover from combofix:
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\ <<< delete that folder.

Scan using these setting:
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks...Phil

Went to HP, downloaded and installed their fix for my hpcmpmgr.exe problem. Used HJT to remove designated file, deleted folder specified, rebooted and reran Kapsersky Scan. Still not clean yet. Does it ever end or is the light at the end of the tunnel a train?

I have not run into this before, and it looks like it may be a false positive?

Here is what is showing:

These are infected System Restore file, I expected them:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{8C459B98-89AA-45F6-A5B9-323014416103}\RP317\A0052253.dll ------> Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.mek
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{8C459B98-89AA-45F6-A5B9-323014416103}\RP317\A0052261.exe ------> Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Obfuscated.ex
This information will clean your System Restore files once the other issue is resolved:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

These are showing as you can see:
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa

What you want to do to be sure is use one or more of these free online scanners:

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/

To make sure they are false positives in Kaspersky. Let me know what you find.

I saw from the links that there can be false/positves, but don't know enough to determine which need to be addressed.

Do I have to run the first link that you gave me regarding the infected System Restore files, and if so, when?

Sorry I have to keep asking so many questions, but I am not an IT person.

Thanks,
Moe

PS - Haven't had any pop-ups yet (shouldn't brag, after I hit send one will show up just to punish me) and computer seems fine so far!

This is as I said, a new situation on me, I need more information before I can advise you. Let's start with this scan:

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

Post that log....Thanks

Should have been everything, but I hit send before I realized mispelled it (but I bet you understood and get that a lot). Upon deletion, gave message that it couldn't remove several items, and I need to restart machine. Will do so and wait for your answer. Hope we are getting close to being done. I have to pack up and leave for home in a few days.

What has me puzzled is that this was a clean computer here:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 7:27:57 PM, on 3/30/2008

with the exception of a couple of infected System Restore Files. This stuff has gotten on this computer since then. This is a new infection and I am not yet sure what it is.
Did you choose "No action taken" on purpose? This may be a file infector infection, if so you might be reformatting the computer?

I would like to look at a combofix log:

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Tutorial if needed:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Thanks

I will not see any other posts until AM EST.

I just got lost with your last reply. The only thing I didn't fix was the iTunes file because I wasn't sure if that was legit or not and I wanted to be sure before I screwed up my iTunes/iPod.

The files it said it couldn't delete were the files you said you expected to see. The only place I have been since the last scan were the places you sent me, so I can't imagine how I got reinfected, unless these were always there and just didn't show up until something else got fixed.

Not sure what you want me to do next. This is getting frustrating and I don't want to do the wrong thing. Should I rerun the previous Malwarebyte's and get rid of the iTunes file and copy down the info on the files it didn't delete or should I
I run combofix and hijackthis and post the logs.

Please advise and I will take next step. Sorry for the confusion, but I'd rather be cautious than have to reformat.

Now I see where you got the no action taken, I hadn't seen that before. I only unclicked iTunes and then asked program to fix everything else. Don't know why it didn't. Do I have to rerun program to get it to try again or can I pick it up by restarting it?

Do I still need to run ComboFix? Do you want a new HJT log?

I'll check in the morning for your response. Sorry for my confusion. I copied the Show Results log and not the completed log as I didn't realize there was more than one.

I have a tool that allows me to look at the infected items in ths Kaspersky scan, but you can look also, just a matter of looking down the lines, in this KOS:
In this scan: Friday, March 28, 2008 2:08:26 PM
These items did not exist:
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe ------> Trojan.Win32.Patched.aa

In this scan: Monday, March 31, 2008 1:03:28 PM
They do, it is not difficult to see that if you look. Whatever they are occured in that time period. If it was on the computer at the time of the first scan, false postive, malware or whatever, it would have been in the first Kaspersky scan and it was not. My assumptions when I asked you to run that scan was that you would find two infected System Restore files, we would clean those and be done.

I am not seeing any malware in this log, can you tell me how the computer is running:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 1:56:05 AM, on 4/1/2008

To be sure we do not have a problem that must be addressed, please follow the directions to run combofix and post the combofix log.

Thanks

Computer seems to be running Ok, but maybe a little slow - but at this point I'm so frustrated mayby I'm just being impatient. Went to run combofix and it sat at DOS deleting files screen for 3 1/2 hours doing nothing. Previous run of combofix didn't take that long. Rebooted computer to ask how long I need to let it sit or what to do next. I understand that those files you referenced showed up, but can't explain it. Wish I knew more about this stuff to help you, but I have followed all directions (and if they weren't clear, asked for further instructions - I'm not above that). Not sure what to do next, but I will wait to hear from you. Was last HJT log clean? Is there something else I can run to verify my machine is clean? What next?
Thanks,
Moe

The last HJT log was clean and the combofix scan should only take about 20 minutes. When there is a problem it is normally caused by combofix being saved to other than the Desktop as instructed. Have a look at this tutorial and be sure you are following the directions.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

If it takes longer than 30 minutes to scan, abort and let me know.

Have a look at this information for ways to improve the computer's performance.

Phil,

Sorry for delay in getting back to you, but I ran into some serious problems. I was talking with a bunch of people about computer problems and the one I was having to warn them about this virus when one of the guys told me he was a systems guy and wanted to look at my machine. I told him I was almost done working with you (at least I thought we were getting close) but he insisted. He loaded AVG to my machine and deleted one of my essential files so I got the blue screen of death. I had most of my software with me when I was down here (FL) for 4 months, but forgot my system backup (won't do that again). He borrowed a neigbor's XP Home disk so he could get me back up and running. But there is one complication that still needs to be resolved. It wants the serial numbers from the other XP to activate the software on-line. So he has to get them later today and then switch them with mine after the activation. So I can't do much until he gets that done, but I did want to let you know why I hadn't replied.

I just now got the of use my computer, and there are a few items I know need to be addressed (my Roxio keeps wanting to install and I already packed the disks away). Needless to say I was unhappy about the whole thing since I am leaving shortly to go home. I will be home late Saturday night, so maybe I can continue this with you next week if that is OK.

Please advise,
Moe

I don't see any problems in the HJT log, but I have no idea what you have this "systems guy" doing? Since he is already hands on, have him continue, I will close this topic. If you are unable to resolve the issues using him, open a new topic and whoever reponds can go from there.

Thanks
