I was just trying to get spybot and I was charged 49.00. for it. But it stalled mid download and shut my internet page down. When I logged back on and searched for spybot again, I found this and it says spybot is free. Where the heck was I and what the heck did I pay for? Help. Was I scammed or what?

Thank you Zenobia, I realize that now and am downloading spybot, but who the heck did I give my 50 bucks to? That is what I want to know. Has anybody else been scammed by some entity claiming to be spybot S&D?

Yes,some people have mistakenly downloaded a similarly named antispyware program in the past, though I'm unsure if that is the one you downloaded, when checking it looks like it may have been renamed.

Also, you should be careful when searching for Spybot on some search engines, some results come up under "sponsored sites" or "sponsored links",but these don't actually lead you to the Spybot webpage,it goes to pages about other antispyware applications.

In addition, there are also rogue antispyware products to watch out for. Some are listed here, though I'm not sure how updated this list is kept now.:

Sadly many people are scammed by rogue programs, some of which actually install malware.

Hello,

This can't be our software.
Our software is called Spybot - Search & Destroy.
You don't have to pay $ for Spybot - Search & Destroy, it's freeware and does not need to be purchased (although we appreciate any donation).

Further please have a look at this link on our website:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/news/2006-08-04.html

You did not get Spybot - Search & Destroy, but some other software of low quality, probably called SpyWareBot.
Our software does not need any registering to work.

If you want to get Spybot - Search & Destroy just download the direct installation file (http://www.spybotupdates.com/files/spybotsd152.exe).

What you should do is ask your credit card company to cancel the payment (since a download is a non-physical thing, the other side will have no reason to object to the cancellation, and the fees are upon them, not you), since it's not us who received your money most probably, but someone trying fraud.

Best regards
Sandra
