Well, my computer is continously having popups about spyware from different companies. It will automatically open new windows and direct me to sites for products that get rid of spyware. It will say that an "Internet attack attempt detected" in a balloon on my taskbar. Additionally, I can't access any other accounts except mine, my task manager is disabled, and my desktop is all white and I cannot change the background at all.

My HiJack This Log follows:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.

You are good and infected, have a look:

W32/Rbot-LD is a worm which attempts to spread to remote network shares and allows unauthorised remote access to the computer via IRC channels.

and that is not all of the junk!

Because of the RBot backdoor, we can clean the infection if you wish but you need this information.

This is going to be complex and require some time, keep the computer offline except when troubleshooting the problem until we get it clean. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. I need some information first, like this:

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post only the C:\rapport.txt

Thanks

How do I turn my internet connection off so that I only connect during troubleshooting. I use comcast as my internet providerJust do not sign in, don't do any online at all except what you have to do here. This is just the first of several tools we have to run.

Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
hosts file corrupted !
After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file
(items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from
the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:

Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, let's see what we can do with HJT, read and follow the directions carefully.

1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

2) WINPATROL may block changes we must make, exit that program until we finish.

3) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

4) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

5) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

6) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and uninstall XPdefender and MyWebSearchWB if there.

7) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB\ <<< delete that folder and contents

C:\Program Files\XPdefender\ <<< delete that folder and contents

9) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.

The computer seems to be running better. Haven't had any popups about spyware since I rebooted.

The file C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ApplicationData\sranolgt.dll would not delete. When prompted if says it was unable to delete file and to check and see if it was in use. I just skipped that part.

The file C:\Program Files\XPDefender did not exist.

In Hijack This, the file
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [XPdefender] "C:\Program Files\XPdefender\XPdefender.exe" hide
did not exist. So I couldn't check it to be fixed with all the other ones.

New HJT Log follows:

Thanks Erin, for returning your information and the feedback, that looks to be a clean HJT log:bigthumb:

Remove SDFix and Smitfraudfix from your computer and run a new KOS using these settings. Expect some issues because we still have infected System Restore files to deal with and this will check for anything else hiding from us.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks...Phil

Following is a new kaspersky log. Also, what about that tea time thing that I "disabled" earlier? Should I turn that back on?

I await your reply.

Just as soon as you see a clean Kaspersky Online Scan you may enable TeaTimer if you use it.

1) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ <<< delete the contents of the folder in red
http://ict.cas.psu.edu/training/howto/util/removespybot.htm#1

2) C:\Documents and Settings\Christina Dempsey\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\ <<< empty the infected Java cache
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/virusproblem/howtoclean/cleanjavacache.shtml

3) C:\WINDOWS\system32\W?nSxS\ <<< delete that folder and contents

4) C:\WINDOWS\jetebadc.exe <<< delete that file

5) Empty the Recycle Bin on the Desktop

6) Restart the computer

7) Clean infected System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you followed the directions, the next KOS will be clean, I do not need to see a clean scan.

First off, instruction #1 there were no files in red. Just black and blue. So I didn't delete anything.
My instruction, if you read them, were to delete the contents of the folder in red. Please return to those instructions and clean out anything in the Spybot S&D folder.
That folded is like a quarantine or backup. If Spybot removes something it should not, you still have the option to return it from there. I can say in about eight years of using the tool, I have never had to do this.

All items in the Kaspersky Online Scan are in that Recovery folder.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\

Done. Clean KOS report so I will not post for you unless requested. Is there any other steps I need to take? Also, what do you recommend to avoid this in the future?
