View Full Version : Infected by Smithfraud and not able to install Spybot

Hello!
My computer has too been infected.
I am assuming that it too is the Smithfraud epidemic, but I am not sure.
Below my text, are the Logfiles from my most current HJT and Smithfraud Fix scans.
I had taken advise from another website, but after numerous cleaning attempts the system still behaves as if it is infected. There are two "mystery" items in the HJT log which can not be fixed by the program or removed manually.
There is also a *.dll error that I do not know how to clean-up ... "scnkeshe.dll", which is also shown in the HJT log.
I had downloaded your Spybot 1.5.2 software and attempted to install it, but as soon as I connected that machine to the internet it began to open numerous versions of the same browser window and did not allow me the ability to close them or kill the process with the task manager.
Since that attempt, I have cleaned the machine to the point of the listed logs and would appreciate any assistance available!
So far, the machine is stable while not connected to the internet, but random "Offline" notifications pop-up.
Thank You!

Hi
1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Blade,
Good Afternoon and Thank You for your assistance.
Pasted below is the Combofix log.
Since your message stated to not mouse-click in the Combofix window, I became nervous when the *.dll error message and the HP request to make recovery CD's popped up, (no worries, I have already made them and do not know why this message randomly displays?). This machine has been a problem from day one, but this infection is not its fault. As you will probably see in the log, this machine was recently returned to me after being gutted and re-built by HP ... its a very long story. Lets just say that I will never buy an HP product again!
Thanks Again!
Jason

Hi
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
Folder::

Save this as
CFScript
http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif
Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes.
The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings and select the following:

Blade,
Hello!
I apologize for the delay, I attend evening classes on Wednesday & Friday.
Below are th Combo fix log and the Kaspersky Online Scanner log.
I noticed that KOS could not scan some of the files since they were locked. I this normal or did I not perform the scan properly?
I did not have enough time this morning before work to run and generate a new hjt log, but I will post one to you soon.
I have a dial-up connection and needed to let the scan run overnight. When I woke up and quickly saved the text log, I re-booted the computer and the *.dll error did not pop-up when the desktop initialized.
Thanks Again for all of your assistance, it appears as if things are improving!
Jason

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=43)
Spybot can be downloaded at this location (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10122137.html?part=dl-spybot&subj=dl&tag=but)
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)
Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade

Blade,
Hello!
I have started working from the top of list of items which you posted for me.
When I removed the files & folders in ... C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine
I need to boot into safe-mode to remove the, because the files and folders listed in the Quarantine directory could not be deleted with Norton either running or logged off.
I did delet the files, which are still in my trash can, but when I booted out of safe-mode, the Windows installer attempted to re-install Norton but could not. After I accept the install abort error, the software seems to run properly? I am not worried about Norton, I plan on removing it and replacing it with either Avast or Kaspersky?
Is there a preferred package which yourself or Spybot endorse as a companion to Spybot?
I attempted to locate and remove ... C:\WINDOWS\system32\ehsekncs.ini
But I was unable to located the file on the disk, even after a windows search with all the files "Shown".
I successfully reset the System Restore operation.
However, when I attempted to run "OTMoveIt2.exe", even after a fresh down-load, it would not perform the "Clean-Up" operation.
The software appeared to launch properly, but when the "Clean-up" was executed, nothing noticeable happened, even after I let it run over-night for approx. 6hrs. This was after I removed the first down-load and retrieved a fresh executable. The CPU useage was being displayed as 51%, per the task-manager, and "OTMoveIt2" was the only prgram actively running.
Note: This was NOT run in Safe-Mode, it was normally booted.
One of the two cores was maxed out and the other was barely loaded.
This is where I stopped. I teminated the "OTMoveIt2" program this morning before I left for work this morning and rebooted the system successfully and again accepted the Norton re-installation error message.
Can I clean up the system manually, or did I run the software improperly ... or is there another program to acquire and run?
Thanks Again!
Jason
Hi Jason :)
I am not worried about Norton, I plan on removing it and replacing it with either Avast or Kaspersky?
Is there a preferred package which yourself or Spybot endorse as a companion to Spybot?
Please see here (http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#scanners) to choose one to replace Norton. Those all should work fine with Spybot.
I attempted to locate and remove ... C:\WINDOWS\system32\ehsekncs.ini
But I was unable to located the file on the disk, even after a windows search with all the files "Shown".
It's ok. I should have meantioned that the file may not exist anymore.
Can I clean up the system manually, or did I run the software improperly ... or is there another program to acquire and run?
Yes, it will be enough if you remove c:\combofix folder and ComboFix.exe file on your desktop.

Blade,
Hello!
I apologize for the long delay, the weather this past weekend was to good to miss!
Almost all of the updates which you had suggested are completed and the system is running like new ... well maybe better!:bigthumb:
Thank you for all of your assistance and patience while walking me step-by-step through the issue and the follow-up assistance was greatly appreciated!
I am definitely sold on this "free service" and will be submitting a donation to this organization. Hopefully I am able to do so with commentary, so that I can express my appreciation and give credit to the proper person! :crowned:
Thanks Again and have a good day!
Jason
