Hi,

I'm trying to sort out a Thinkpad laptop that I think has got the Vundo and/or the command.exe viruses. Someone downloaded a Morpheus download thing onto it, and since then there have been a number of problems:
1)Pop-ups that seem to have something to do with storageprotector 2) Windows update and help and support center icons have appeard on the desktop - if deleted, they just re-appear 3) thousands of .tmp files have appeared in the my documents folder 4) Dodgy adverts appear on websites which don't have that type of advert... 5) pressing ctrl-alt-del doesn't work 6) Computer is slow to respond, etc, etc...

I've followed ths instructions here regarding installing latest version of spybot S&D, etc... Kaspersky didn't work - when pressing the "accept" button, it just "hanged" and nothing further happened. I've done the spybot S&D scan and fix in Safe mode. and have just downloaded Hijackthis.exe and run the scan. Below is the log

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hello

Please download ComboFix from Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
Close any open browsers.
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.
WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response!
I downloaded the latest Combofix.exe, then disabled the TeaTimer on Spybot, and stopped the Anti-virus software. However, when I tried to run Combofix.exe, I got a dialogue box, saying: “Windows cannot find “C:\WINDOWS\REGEDIT.EXE’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again….”, and then nothing more happened.

I checked in the Windows directory, and there is a file there called regedit.exe.
What should my next step be?

Thanks
James

Do this

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
Close all other windows before proceeding.
Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hello

Now we need to reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

* Click on the Start Button, Click Search
Click "All Files and Folders"
Click "Advanced Options", put a check next to the following:
Search System Folders
Search Hidden Files And Folders
Search Subfolders

Next copy and paste the following entries into the search box(one at a time):

gdxmfldr
alxytfuy

Tell me if they are found and where they are

Wow, you are quick to respond! Excellent service, thanks.

Did exactly as you suggested, and:

Searched for: gdxmfldr and found it in: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot – Search & Destroy\Recovery\Virtomondedll9.zip

Searched for: alxytfuy, and it found it in: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot – Search & Destroy\Recovery\Virtomondedll1.zip

Hope that helps!
James

Hello

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan. Check all the boxes and click Start Scan
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

Hello

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Now we need to fix your problems by making a .reg file. Copy the code below into a Notepad file. Name the file as fix.reg, change the "Save as Type" to "All files" and save it on the desktop.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{06ae4071-5ca1-11db-82b7-806d6172696f}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,00,73,00,76,00,31,00,5f,00,30,00,00,00,00,\
00

Then double click on the fix.reg file, when it prompts to merge click "Yes".

Reboot and post a new DSS log and tell me how your PC is running

Hello,

I did as requested, and it went well, up 'til I double clicked on the fix.reg txt file I'd created. Windows came up with an error message:

Registry Editor
Cannot import C:\Documents and Settings\IBM USER\Desktop\fix.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

I had a quick look to see if I could find the registry editor (is it in the control panel?), but thought I'd be best asking you! Thanks for all your efforts!

Do this

Please download DAFT (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/daft.exe) and save it to your desktop:

Double-click the daft.exe icon.
Click on the Scan button.
Select everything it is displaying there
Click the Fix button.
Then rescan with DAFT again - it should say now that "All associations are OK"
Close DAFT if you receive that message. This means that it is fixed now.

Then try it

If it fails, then do this(you may need to host this file at mediafire.com)

Please download RUNSCANNER (http://www.runscanner.net/download.aspx) to your desktop and run it.

When the first page comes up select Beginner Mode
On the next page select Save a binary .Run file (Recommended) then click Start full scan at the top.
At this time Runscanner.exe may request access to the Internet through your firewall please allow it to do so, it will then run for two or three minutes.
On completion it will ask for a location to save the file and a name. It will do this for both the .run file and the log
Call the file "Select a file name here" and save it to your desktop. You will see the .run file on your desktop. Please zip the .run file by right clicking and selecting send to Zip file

Then upload that as an attachment in your next post.

Hello,

I've downloaded and run the daft.exe, and it worked fine. - i.e gave the results: "All associations are fine" at the end. Great!
The computer seems to be running better than it has in a long time, I think all the faults I noticed have gone. Whats next?

Cheers
James

Just one thing refusing to go

Can you do the runscanner step in my previous post please

OK, I've downloaded and run the Runscan, and it went OK. Attached is the runscan.zip file.

Hello

Download the zipped attachment at the end of this post(this will be your runscanner as fixed by me)

Unzip it to your desktop then double click the runscanner icon this will run the program.
Click on the "Item Fixer" tab
You will notice several entries with a tick in red, click Fix checked.
Accept the warning then repeat until they are all gone.

Then reboot and post a new DSS log and tell me how your PC is running

Hi,
That went OK. Below is the main.txt log from the DSS scan. The PC seems to be working just fine. Can’t find any faults with it. Cheers!
James

Your logs are clean ! We need to do a few things

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
Click on the CleanUp! button
A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp)

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html) protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe) puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)

* SpywareGuard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html) offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure

Click Start > Run
Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/)

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here (http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=60955)

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Hello Rorschach112,

Thank You so Much!
I’ve done as you suggested and removed all the things installed during the clean-up, updated windows, Java and IE7. I already use Firefox. I’ve also installed the Spyware blaster, etc and read about and installed updated Anti-virus software and a firewall. I can’t thank you enough for your help! – now I can actually get back to using the computer as intended!

Thanks
James

Since this issue appears to be resolved ... this Topic has been closed. Glad I could help.

Note: If it has been five days or more since your last post, and the helper assisting you posted a response to that post to which you did not reply, your topic will not be reopened. At that point, if you still require help, please start a new topic and include a fresh HijackThis log and a link to your previous thread.

If it has been less than five days since your last response and you need the thread re-opened, please send me or your helper a private message (pm). A valid, working link to the closed topic is required.
