View Full Version : Error message during installation Spybot 1.5.2
Greetings,
Has anyone encountered the error message below during upgrade to and
installation of Spybot 1.5.2 on Windows XP?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\.......\BROWSER HELPER OBJECTS\
{53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D-942484F}
RegCreateKeyEx failed; code 6
The handle is invalid.
I selected 'ignore' error and continued Spybot installation anyway.
Spybot now seems to run normally on the surface but I do hope a real
techie could offer some advise cos it could mean that something
is broken inside.
Cheers and thanks.

Tanggo:
The Browser Helper Object (BHO) with a CLSID (GLID) of {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D-942484F} is Spybot's SDHelper BHO which is an Internet Explorer plugin that blocks access to certian sites and prevents the storing of tracking cookies when using Internet Explorer.
I don't know what caused the initial problem, but you could try to activate SDHelp again if you want by:
Going into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Resident. Then under the heading "Resident protection status", checking the following item if its unchecked or possibly unchecking and rechecking it: Resident "SDHelper" (Internet Explorer bad download blocker) active.

Just checked SDHelper as advised. Greatly relieved that my spybot
is not sick after all, just a scratch that can heal.
BTW, just another query further to your suggested solution.
- Does this mean that affiliates will not get a commission if I buy
thru their links?
- Is this install glitch irrelevant since I mainly use Firefox?
- What should I do about that registry key? Its called a key isn't it?
U are da man/de gal.

If their commission is cookie based, possibly. If it is based on an affiliate id in the link, probably not.

As I indicated, I don't know what caused the initial problem, but by checking SDHelper you should have installed the SDHelper and the registry key should have been created.
