View Full Version : Unendding Pop up ads for anti-virus software and more
Hello,
I just read the "Before you post" but not in time to stop myself from wiping out all my System Retore points  I tried all my "good points" but my computer just would not restore to earlier points for some reason, even after cold reboots. So, I saw no use for them. Hope I don't need'em to fix my problem.
Anyway, my problem is similar to older ones I've seen posted here. Recently I downloaded some stupid software from a third party and have since uninstalled it only to learn that I now get constant pop ups in new windows whenever I surf the web using either IE or FireFox. The latter works a little better in blocking the ads but has gotten worse over the last 2 days.
No other symptoms have I noticed besides this one annoyance.
I've already downloaded a bunch of freeware to try to erradicate my problem after reading some of the advice on this forum. But I guess my needs are specific.

Hi Kraven
Download F-Secure Blacklight and save it to your desktop -> ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
Doubleclick fsbl.exe, accept the agreement, click Scan, then click Next
You'll see a list what have been found. A log will appear to your desktop, it is named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx will be random numbers).
DON'T choose Rename if something was found!
Post the contents of fsbl.xxxx.log to here (xxxx= random numbers, blacklight log from your desktop)
Hello Shaba,
Thanks for the quick response.
I have done as you said and the scan did not turn up anything.

Since I last posted I keep getting pop up windows when I surf the web even when clicking on internal links on websites like this forum. And the ads are becoming more varied instead of trying to sell anti-virus software. I'm not surprised based on my reading posts from the experts here.
Anyway, I'll wait for your next instructions, Shaba.
Kraven
Hi
Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank (unless you have set it)
O2 - BHO: DWABrowserHlprObj Class - {2709D830-B643-4e72-9A1E-701CFFFCF30C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dwabho.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [fsjgdt] c:\documents and settings\ramon.new-computer\local settings\application data\fsjgdt.exe fsjgdt
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZN
Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.
Reboot.
Delete this:
c:\documents and settings\ramon.new-computer\local settings\application data\fsjgdt.exe
Empty Recycle Bin.
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post.
Shaba,
I've followed your instructions and have the two text files.
Extra :

Hi
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
o Scan Options:
+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Click the Save Report As... button (see red arrow below)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/Kas-SaveReport-1.gif
In the Save as... prompt, select Desktop
In the File name box, name the file KasScan-ddmmyy (or similar)
In the Save as type prompt, select Text file (see below)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/Kas-Savetxt.gif
Now click on the Save as Text button
Savethe file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Note: This scanner will work with Internet Explorer Only! Keep ALL other programs closed during the scan
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

I'll wait for your next instructions, Shaba :)
Kraven
Hi
You can delete these:
D:\SmitfraudFix
D:\SmitfraudFix.exe
Empty Recycle Bin.
Still problems?
Hi Shaba,
So far no new pop ups have appeared !
I'd like to wait a little longer before I can say for sure that the problem has been solved.
I hope this isn't too premature but...
Thanks a million!
Kraven
Hi
That's ok, post back after a couple of days and I'll give you final instructions.
Hi Shaba,
I've been surfing as I normally do and haven't bumped into any pop-up windows, so it seems like everything is okay again :2thumb:
One thing I should mention : on my hardrive I've noticed I have some 40 or 50 new ".tmp" files whose icons are translucent. Their names start with "~WRL...". I'm not sure what to do with them so I better leave them alone unless you can suggest something.
Thanks, again, for helping me get things back to normal ! :)
I'll wait for your final instructions.
Kraven
Hi
This should take care of them; they are normal temp files:

Any other issues left?
Thanks, Shaba.
No, no other issues. :)
Kraven

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and save it to your desktop.
Scroll down to where it saysThe Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications..
Click the Download button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
