mrgcap
2008-04-09, 04:38
Hi

Spybot in normal mode identified a number of problems and fixed all but Smitfraud...when I restart computer the ones that were removed start reappearing...I thought I had it fixed following your instruction to run spybot in safemode as it did remove all 4 problems including Smitfraud, but no such luck. As soon as I started in normal mode the pop ups were back. I have attached the Hijackthis log, but the Kaspersky scan was very long so I didnt attach. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Mark

Hi

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Hi

Start hjt, do a system scan, check:
O4 - Startup: Deewoo.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mcntrkdn.exe
O4 - Startup: DW_Start.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rwwnw64d.exe

Close browsers and other windows. Click fix checked.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rwwnw64d.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msnav32.ax
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\targetedbanner-uninst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mcntrkdn.exe

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wii
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pinz1
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\IDE2
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ExTmp
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bharebio01
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\axV
C:\Temp\wdlw14

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"{C8-82-25-5D-DW}"=-
"g]eeV\mWhjlnspB"=-

Save this as
CFScript

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Hi

Reboot into safe mode (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm#02).

Start hjt, do a system scan, check:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [g]eeV\mWhjlnspB] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mcntrkdn.exe DWram

Close browsers and fix checked entries.

Reboot back into normal mode and post a fresh hjt log.

Hi

Did you have some installation ongoing while taking the hjt log? If not, what does the quoted folder contain among setup.exe file?

mrgcap
2008-04-11, 14:00
unless there were automatic updates going in the background there was nothing that I was installing.
I just did a search of all files and folders for setup.exe but could not see a file with the name "cd4ecb8187e424cde4edace6c226" I then searched all files and folders on C drive for "cd4ecb8187e424cde4edace6c226" but the search came back with nothing. Am I looking in the wrong places?

You were looking from right place. Most likely it was Windows automatic updates as you said.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt2 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.

Download iespyad

bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Blade

I reset the system restore. Had a bit of a scare when I rebooted before unchecking *turn off system restore* when I got the blue screen...but turned off and rebooted again and so far ok.

In the process of removing Java I noticed a couple of programs in the Add/Remove programs that I am not familiar with:

My Way Search Assistant and MySidesearch Search Assistant Adzgalore

any ideas as to what these might be?

Thanks

Blade

You can close the topic. I ran spybot and it picked up a couple of issues which were successfully removed. The EZ Antivirus and the Kaspersky scan came back completely clean. Many thanks for your help in resolving the problem. I'm sure I speak for everyone on the forum when I say that your time and help is very much appreciated.
