Smitfraud C and Spybot Resident

Hi, i'm having a persistent issue with smitfraud-C. What happens is the Spybot Resident keeps popping up with this message:
" Process Terminated; Identified as: User decision; Resident terminated the process SVCHOST.EXE because it was on the black list".
After I manage to close the program, I would scan my PC with Spybot S&D which picks up Smitfraud. Even though it fixes the problem, the whole things starts all over again whenever I turn on the PC. Recently, my AVG started picking up a TrojanHorse. I'm concerned this situation is going to get worse. I've followed your instructions: (1) the Kaspersky Scan (2) Run SPybot S&D in safe mode (3) run HijackThis. Hope you can help me out!

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

One of those: C:\WINDOWS\SVCHOST.EXE, is a backdoor trojan, DO NOT confuse it with the valid C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe <<< running from System32. Because of this trojan, I believe you should have this information.

Because you mention Smitfraud, we will check for that infection first.

1) Your KOS indicates and infected Java cache:

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

3) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix, the contents of the Report.txt from SDFix a new HijackThis log

Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:

After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

I will point out for your information that one item Smitfraudfix identified C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe FOUND !
was located and removed by SDFix prior to running "Clean". We will still run Smitfraudfix because of the corrupted hosts file and anything else it may locate.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log. Tell me how the computer is running.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, just a little more to do.

1) TeaTimer is running in this HJT log? Instructions were:

(leave TT disabled until we finish)Please disable it and leave it disabled!!

2) Remove Smitfraudfix and SDFix from your computer.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to WindowsMgr and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O23 - Service: WindowsMgr (winvnc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SVCHOST.EXE (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\WINDOWS\SVCHOST.EXE <<< should be gone but check to be sure

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

If all goes well, and your computer is still performing as it should be, let's have Kaspersky Online Scan check to be sure we missed nothing, use these settings:

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Sorry for taking so long - had to leave for several days. I (1) switched off tea-timer, (2) removed smitfraudfix & SDFix, and (3) downloaded ATF Cleaner. Step (4) disable service, the WindowsMgr was already stopped.

Step (5) I ran HijackThis as instructed but there was no: O23 - Service: WindowsMgr (winvnc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SVCHOST.EXE (file missing). So I checked
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file) and "Fix Checked".

Step (6) C:\WINDOWS\SVCHOST.EXE wasn't found
Step (7) Ran ATF.
Step (8) Ran Kaspersky Online Scan using the settings you gave, and here's the log:

There is one infected System Restore files:

Clean that like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Should I scan my comp with Spybot, AVG etc after switching off system restore? I was told this can help get rid of trojans, worms and the like, from the system restore.

Also, I noticed a new folder was created on my desktop, called "backups" and in it was the file "backup-20080427-103235-213". I opened it with notepad and this came up: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file). What does this mean? Shall I just delete it?

Other then that, the computer is running well - thank you for all your help!

Understand System Restore files are protected file and even though AVG may show infected SR files in a scan, it cannot do anything with it because of the protected status. It's good to run regular scans with both tools, but there is no need to turn off System Restore when you do it.

C:\Documents and Settings\Jas\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe (no folder for safely storing)

I suggest you use these instructions to move HJT to a safe location off the Desktop. I do not like it there, especially if there is anyone with access to the computer who might fool with it, it can be dangerous in untrained hands.
You can delete the copy on the Desktop and the Backups folder also. HJT makes Backups of anything you remove in case an error occurs and you need to restore it, here is some information:

Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.

You may close that log, it will store in the HJT folder and give you a copy of the HJT log at that point for reference.
