Downloaded Spybot S & D onto my work computer yesterday, full installation, went to go start it and keep getting an error message about having to download updates first...go to download updates and after a small search dialog box says no new updates available, S & D still won't start, same error...anybody had this happen before?

Hello,

Please try to download the updates manually:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Here is the direct download link (http://www.spybotupdates.com/updates/files/spybotsd_includes.exe).
Just download and run that file - it is self-installing.

Sandra, gotta quick question for you...the smileys you've got down with your "Please don't PM" line...are those extolling Firefox as opposed to IE? I've been curious about Firefox, due to a lot of people raving about it lately...can you elaborate just a tad?

timmerz:

If you have a firewall:
To use the intergrated update facility in Spybot 1.5 you must authorize SDUpdate.exe to access the internet.

If you are sitting behind a proxy server:
Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced mode > Settings > Settings. About 2/3 of the way down the option tree there is a category "Web update". Check the last item in the list "Use proxy to connect to update server". A pop-up will come up were you can enter the information required.

If you need to know what the settings should be for the proxy server, there are hints in the following article on how to find them:
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
The integrated update is not working. Are there any solutions for this?

Hello,

The smiley:FF: is pushing away the IE icon and is hugging the Firefox icon. ;)

Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/) is supposed to provide faster, safer and more efficient browsing than other browsers.
What is more: it comes with an integrated pop-up blocking function, which means it stops annoying pop-up ads automatically.
And, of course, Firefox is freeware.
