Hi Folks,

I am really not savvy at all, and I knew the moment I got this that I had a virus or something. You see ... I have had my computer for a year and a half and NEVER use internet explorer. There was a website that would not work properly in Firefox, so I used IE and boom it got me.

So far, I have uses S&D in safemode 3 times and cannot make virtumonde go away.

I think there are other problems as well, but I did HJT and Kapersky before the reboot. Now, the problem with Kapersky is twofold ... I have to use IE, and it takes about 4 hours to run.

I will do whatever you recommend, but I am on the road this evening and will not be back in for 4 hours.

This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

Hello Donna, you have evidence that both infections (Smitfraud and Vundo) are active. This is going to take a while, your option would be a reformat. If you wish to continue with the cleanup, start with KOS.

I have a morning appt, but will be back in a couple of hours and will start the process early this afternoon.

The problem with doing a reformat is I don't know how to begin and with this dual hard drive thing ... it is crazy. After this virus I noticed my system restore before april 9 was gone so one of them affects restore points for certain and this only happened when i used internet explorer.

What I am saying is those three files you told me to delete are not showing up in those directories to delete them.

Look at this link for directions to unhide those files. If you can delete them, do so, if not we will get them before we are done, we have a long way to go.

After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file
(items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from
the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

I was able to find/unhide the two windows files (not mywebsearch) but I am getting denied access when I attempt to delete them.

I am going to do the safemode with smitfraudfix and will post rapport (less host info) and HJT when I return

Try deleting them while you are in safe mode, they will not be running and should delete.

1) You may remove Smitfraudfix from your computer.

2) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

(Wait until you finish to post the reports and logs)

3) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the report from SDFix, the combofix log and a new HJT log.

I got rid of CDService.dll in safe mode, but no kmyintty.dll

Two things happen when I start the computer:

1. RUNDLL ERROR: Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\kmyintty.dll
Can not be found

2. hpqtb08.exe error:
app or dll C:\windows\system32\geBuSKDu.dll is not a valid window
image.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the combofix log and a new HJT log and let me know how the computer is running.

Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.

I will want to install recovery console ... because I did not get xp cd's with this computer. It is an HP laptop and with a restore without disc recovery system ....

Thanks for returning your information, looks like combofix did the job, your HJT log looks clean:bigthumb: How is the computer running?

As soon as you install Recovery Console, post the Log from combofix for installing recovery console, then remove SDFix and combofix, including the C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\ folder. Then run a new Kaspersky Online Scan using these settings. Expect the infected System Restore files, we are checking to be sure nothing else hides from us.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Computer speed is up by the way and running quite smooth at the moment.

Does it matter that this laptop has dual hard drives? Will there be anything to worry about on the other one? I am pasting a print screen here. I just thought of this since one drive is actually labeled HP Recovery.

Thanks for returning your information and your question. That's sounds like HP partitioned your hard drive and put the information usually on a CD on the drive, that is information you would need to do a reformat. There should be no reason to be concerned about that area of your drive.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
