View Full Version : Systemerrorfixer etc

Hi,

I picked up something on my computer a few days ago and I'm at my wits end...
The main things I noticed were random pop-ups and error messages asking me to download systemerrorfixer which I gather is a common symptom. Also everything runs a lot slower. I downloaded a number of anti-virus programs and have got rid of these messages but I still have a number of Trojans and rootkits according to my virus scans that I can't seem to get rid of. These are the results from the Spyware Doctor scan:
Rootkit.Agent
Trojan.Virtumonde
Trojan-Downloader.ConHoo...
RogueAntiSpyware.Spyware
Spyware.180search_Assistant
Was trying to printscreen the results to show you but couldn't get the file small enough...

Spybot seems to find these bugs when it does a system scan but as soon as I click 'Fix These Problems' my computer restarts, checking for errors etc and apparently not actually fixing it. I ran Spybot in safe mode and it said it had resolved all (34 or something) problems - but I know the viruses above are still there are they still show up on Spyware Doctor and other programs when I run them in normal Windows.

I'm not great with computers and really in need of help right now (have exams coming up soon), any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi

Download and install TrendMicro HijackThis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe)
* Once installed open HijackThis by clicking Start > Programs > HijackThis and click the button labeled
Do a system scan only

* Click the scan button in the lower left hand corner of the interface and HijackThis will quickly scan your system.
* Once the scan is complete the scan button will now read save log. Click this button to save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file it will open in your systems default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad. Post the log here. :)

Hi :)

Delete D:\Program Files\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 2\crack.exe file. Other bad items should be removed by flushing system restore and running OTMoveIT2's CleanUp function. Instructions for both below.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Next we remove all used tools.

Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hi,

Thanks so much for your help with all this. I did what you suggested above without any problems but I'm not convinced that it's all gone. Firstly my computer takes an unbelievable amount of time to start up and Internet explorer is also taking a lot longer than normal (and sometimes closes itself saying it's performed an illegal operation, which has rarely happened before). Secondly the Spyware Doctor scan still finds 4 of the original 5 infections:
Rootkit.Agent
Trojan-Downloader.Conhook
RogueAntiSpyware.SpywareNo
Spyware.180search_Assistant

But Spybot says I'm clear.....
Should I do another HJT scan?

Hi

Yes, please create a fresh hjt log and post it back here.

EDIT: Tell me also locations of those Spyware Doctor findings.

Rootkit.Agent is at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drivers\oreans32.sys
It doesn't give locations for the others but it gives Registry Values and Registry Keys for them if that would help. There are a lot and I can't select the text though :red:

Hi

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Could you create a screenshot (http://www.winxptutor.com/screenshot.htm) of those Spyware Doctor findings?

Didn't have any problems running combofix but when it was finished, nothing was on my desktop - just the background, no icons, not even the Start menu and bar! I feel this is not a good thing? I couldn't open anything so I rebooted and everything seems fine....

Hi

A couple of files must be still removed. Otherwise cf log looks fine :)

Show hidden files
-----------------
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Delete following files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bfpeirme.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xtsivksk.ini

Unfortunately I can't make a thing out of that screenshot since it's so small and if I zoom closer it gets messed up.

Does Spyware Doctor give any option to save the results as a log?

This finding is a false positive I think:

Rootkit.Agent is at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drivers\oreans32.sys

OK I've deleted those files.

I can't find an option to get a log from Spyware Doctor but I took screenshots of all of the output and put them here:

http://community.webshots.com/album/563106455WXRpXo

Can you read it?

Yes, but only partially. Let's run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware at this point.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Hi

Let's run SuperAntiSpyware next. Before it uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-malware thru add/remove programs.

Then download SUPERAntispyware Free Edition (http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html)

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
* It will ask if you want to Update the program definitions, click Yes.
* Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:

Close browsers before scanning
Scan for tracking cookies
Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
Please leave the others unchecked.
Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.

* On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
* On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.

OK

Of the 4 it found last time:

Rootkit.Agent
Trojan-Downloader.Conhook
RogueAntiSpyware.SpywareNo
Spyware.180search_Assistant

The first two are gone (which it rated as the most dangerous).

The last two are still there, along with
Trojan.Generic

and an application (NirCmd) which it rates as legit.

Hi

Yes, NirCmd is legit. Let's try to remove that other one with a little registry fix.

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on the Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1149337873-3581715974-4078141996-1005\Software\Wget]

It should look like this -> http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/reg.gif

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here (http://www.nellie2.co.uk/file.htm#How_to_Make_a_.Reg_File_) with screenshots.)

Let me know if that helped :)

Something called 'Application.TrackingCookies' (also apparently legit) has replaced the Trojan one. The other 3 are still there.

Hi

To be able to help I would need to see all items Spyware Doctor finds. Cookie is not a problem but if you want those registry findings cleaned I need to see their complete paths. The regfix I provided in my previous post was easy enough to create 'cos I could see whole key in the screenshot.

OK

There are two registry keys for each of the two that are still a problem.

For RogueAntiSpyware.SpywareNo (7 infections):

For Spyware.180search_Assistant (6 infections):

Do you need registry values as well?

It only finds cookies and NirCmd now! Could this mean we've succeeded...?:beerbeerb:

Blade81
2008-04-16, 17:29
Yep. :) If you install that hosts file I meantioned you won't see too many cookies either. Can't recall whether or not I meantioned this but it's recommended to run ATF Cleaner occasionally (once or twice a month). That way you can clean out temporary files that otherwise keep piling up. :)
