hi wolfblitz,

update and run malwarebytes and post that log please:

select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.

* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

hi wolfblitz,

you saw what malwarebytes removed?

Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\System (Rootkit.DNSChanger) -> Data: kdmzj.exe -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
------------------
there is a way in spybot to get the last scan result. not the entire scan but only what was found after the scan. iam in linux right now and cant check how to do that in spybot. see if you can manage, spybot will have to be in advanced mode. mode>advanced then tools or something. next time iam in windows i will check and post back if you havent already figured it out.
just curious to see what spybot is flagging.

also you might re-run malwarebytes after checking for updates.

hi wolfblitz,

lets try Fixwareout:

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you
will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make
sure Run fixit box is checked and click Finish. The fix will
begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer;
please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is
normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a new HijackThis log, along with the contents of
the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

hi wolfblitz,

ok yet another download to get:

Download Deckard's System Scanner to your Desktop.:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe
http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of Main.txt here.
A folder, C:\Deckard\System Scanner, will also open. In it will be another text file, Extra.txt.
Please attach Extra.txt to your post.

hi,

ok thanks for all the info. i see the registry item in the log

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
"system"="kdmzj.exe"

iam not sure about the proper syntax for a reg file. so lets get one more download to use:

Download combofix from one of these links and save it to Desktop:

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

as a precaution, before using combofix:

1. * Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
* Click on this link below to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
* Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

* IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
* If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

hi wolfblitz,

ok good. this wareout or Zlob infection as its called is usually not that difficult to remove. the ever changing malware, it adapts to!

can combofix be used on a regular basis like spybot
iam sure some people no doubt do that but its not recommended in a unsupervised environment. it may remove some things on its own but alot of malware may require script files for removal.

before we clean up using explorer, click on your Local Disk (C) and delete these two folders:

C:\4b6c686b320a0b02071e8779
C:\6e972bc5707354af1511998a9cbadb

hi wolfblitz,

ok good. really i have no idea what those folders where. they were displayed in combofix. sometimes folders/files are known malware like a .exe or .dlls. sometimes its not so easy to distinguish between the good and the bad. if a search dosnt turn up any results i assume they can be deleted. they may have been harmless, just empty leftover folders. malware can create and drop files/folders all over your computer.

in any case if all is good you can delete the fixwareout icon off your desktop and delete combofix like this:
start>run and type in combofix /u click ok
note: there is a space after the x and before the /

scan once in awhile with malwarebytes after checking for updates.

a good tool to use to help keep stuff like temp dir cleaned up is atf cleaner:

two things:
i think there is a newer java version out now. the how and the why:

Vulnerabilities/exploits in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions which may have vulnerabilites/exploits that can be taken advantage of to introduce malware.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

restore points, the how and why:
One of the features of Windows ME, XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

i have some prevention tips in link below.

happy safe surfing.

hi wolfblitz

your welcome. happy safe surfing.

The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS, browser and software up to date.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer.
3) Dont click on adds/pop ups or offers from websites to install software.
4) Dont click on offers to "scan" your computer.
5) Dont click on links or install files you receive via E-Mail or IM.
6) Set up and use limited accounts rather than administrator accounts.
7) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
8) Install, keep updated: antivirus and one or two anti-malware applications.
9) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
10) If your habits include warez, cracks/keygens, P2P or visting adult sites you are much more likely to encounter malicious code.
