View Full Version : Virtumonde/Smitfraud infection help

Looks like i've caught Smitfraud/Virtumonde. Problem is that I only had Windows Defender at the time, knew something was wrong, did a scan/repair with that and with iolo System Mechanic and Norton AV. All found things (none of which called them Smitfraud) and "repaired" them, but still had problems. I got spybot, scanned and repaired with that (not allowing any of the immediate changes the malware seemed to want to drop back in). Surfed around, found the smitfraudfix program BEFORE i found my way here. Unfortunately, i'm very new to this sort of infection and didn't know I should've waited with the smitfraudfix program until reporting hijack and KAV data here.

So i can post the hijack data here now, but am afraid to run KAV since it sounds like if i connect back to the internet with the infected computer i'll just reinfect it. Smitfraudfix (ran both that and hijack in safe mode) went off without a hitch, didn't ask to fix any files after it cleaned the registry. I will include the rapport text after the hijack text.

Am not sure now how to proceed, comp is still sitting in safe mode after completing these steps. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

I ended up posting the HJT log after the rapport as this was the order I did these two.

Hi

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode

On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply :)

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Woot! Thank you for the response!

Combofix ran without hitch, although it looks like the recovery add-in suggested by the combofix guide didn't take.

As a note, after running ComboFix and getting log. It looks like the malware tried to reinstall itself (as "PC-Cleaner"). I killed it with the task manager, but...

Hi

Start hjt, do a system scan, check:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - <default> - (no file)

Close browsers and other windows. Click fix checked.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lylutyzw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oqWHOqru.ini
C:\WINDOWS\temlxopqgdk.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gpsfsfgh.exe

Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\urkvwpoj

Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"xfbiclyi"=-
"afnqoujo"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run]
"KhBqW1esEK"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\mlJBQKdc]

Save this as
CFScript

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes.
The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings and select the following:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (If available, otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK.
Under
select a target to scan
, select My Computer.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.Once the scan is complete:
Click on the Save as Text button.

Sorry, but having more problems. I ran the hjt scan. Erased the desired file. Created the CFScript, dropped it on ComboFix. It started, but didn't even get to the first stage. It froze, i couldn't even use the task manager.

So i rebooted. Ran hjt again, but no R3 file. Dropped CFScript on Combo again. This time (and all subsequent times) i opened the task manager before combofix got going. Combo listed the files from CFString. Combo finished stage 4, then hung. Task manager did not list any find, findstr, sed or swreg processes. Task manager froze eventually.

Rebooted again, no CFScript anymore so just ran ComboFix. Got past stage 38 then hung. Found a sed.cfexe process but task manager couldn't kill it. It eventually froze again. CF9879.exe process was taking up 99 percent of CPU at that point.

Rebooted again, remade CFScript just in case. Dropped on Combo, ran again. Hung after stage 4 again. Found VFind.exe process in task manager, killed it successfully, but froze again.

Will try one more round with ComboFix without CFScript to see if i can get it all the way through. If i can't i'll run hjt and Kaspersky and report both logs here in the morning. Until then, here is the hjt log i just ran after these Combo attempts.

Hi

Start hjt, do a system scan, check:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [vekblmdj] C:\WINDOWS\system32\fidsnqbk.exe

Close browsers and other windows. Click fix checked.

Delete following file if found:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fidsnqbk.exe

Reboot and post a fresh hjt log. :)

RunDown
2008-04-17, 20:48
Hello,

ATF Cleaner run successfully...Kaspersky run following that.

Then ran hjt per your suggestion, fixed fidsnqbk.exe. Then deleted it from system32 folder.

Rebooted. Created new hjt log.

Kaspersky log posted first followed by hjt log. Thanks again for your help.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=48)
The program is available for download here (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-1)
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
See here (http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#firewalls) to choose one unless your Symantec includes a firewall too.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

RunDown
2008-04-17, 22:44
Ack,

I think I screwed up. But hopefully it's easily remedied.

I turned on TeaTimer and was clicking through prompts and I think i moved the mouse and didn't pay attention right away and accidentally denied some of the changes - ugh. Specifically I denied the changes to the start page, search page and one other page to Internet Explorer. I found a registry hack to change the start page so i suppose i could at least start up IE and change the other two (although at this point i can only remember one of the two - search page). I can't seem to force TeaTimer to reexamine this change.

Everything else seems fine, no signs of malware. ANy advice on this? I'd rather make sure i got this fixed for sure before I proceed on with the restore steps you provided.

So sorry about this, stupid fingers.

Oh, and the Internet start page there "howtogeek.com" was the registry hack i found. not the start page i want, but at least not the one the malware had in there, so i can potentially at least start IE if needed to change other pages.

Hopefully I wasn't trying to be too clever by doing that.

Hi

We have to disable TeaTimer until you've fixed entries below with hjt. After that remember run ResetTeaTimer.bat before enabling TeaTimer. That way TeaTimer's snapshots are cleared and those entries won't come back.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode

On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

Fix following entries with hjt:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02715E47-5A8E-495B-8F63-0D30470B8E72} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mlJBQKdc - C:\WINDOWS\

Reset Teatimer

* Right-click >here (http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat)< and select
Save as
and save it without changing the name to your desktop
* Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
* Open Spybot S&D
o Click Mode > check Advanced Mode
o Go to the left Panel and click Tools then, also in left panel, click Resident (OK any firewall prompts)
o Check the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts
o Use File > Exit to terminate Spybot
* Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect
* You can now delete ResetTeaTimer.bat

That should do it. :)

Looks like i'm in the clear! cleared those files, ran teatimer remover (again, not getting warning about those IE files, but i'm guessing that's okay at this point). Reset the system restore, as instructed. Uninstalled ComboFix. Cleared old Java and installed Update 6. Modified IE security.

Thank you again for all your help! You are a life-saver! :bigthumb:
