View Full Version : Random programs trying to gain 'net access (Malware?)

Just started, as far as I can tell, this morning. Randomly programs will kick off ZoneAlarm's alerter stating they're trying to access the internet. So far two screen savers ribbons.scr and mystify.scr, RootAlyzer.exe (while running), dwm.exe and teatimer.exe have all for no reason tried to access the internet. When trying to install programs (RootAlyzer, hijackthis, ZA update) explorer.exe then tries to make a network connection.
AVG (free) updated reports the system clean. AdAware only finds tracking cookied. SpyBot finds nothing. I've got the startup trimmed down to almost nothing. Windows Defender finds nothing. Kapersky found nothing (log below):

Not being real familiar with Vista, I scanned those few I did not recognize. You understand almost all programs will try to access the internet and you are the one who decides what should have access and what should not.

I suggest you take the time to view the tutorial in Zone Alarm so you can understand how to do this. On my free version of Zone Alarm, the tutorial is at: Restore Zone Alarm Control Center > Overview to the left and choose the Status Tab, the tutorial is upper right on the console.

The only issue I see in the HJT log is an out of date Java program:

I do understand ZoneAlarm and have run it since it was first released to the public. I'm not a novice user. This just started happening in the last few days. I've had the machine for 9 months and practically the first thing I did was install the ZA firewall. These processes, and screen savers have NEVER before tried connecting to the net the entire time I've had this computer. That's what's got me worried. All scans show the machine's clean but it keeps happening. It just happened now as I was typing this reply dwm.exe (desktop window manager) tried to make an outbound connection. Before this week it never had.

Even Spybot acted up. Started it. Checked for updates (gave permission to connect, most programs don't get automatic access), and while checking for problems about five minutes into the scan the ZA requestor popped up saying Spybot wanted to access the internet. I don't even know how that could be since I hadn't closed the program and it had already been given access.

I have found that the last several attempts (and I guess all of them) have been to 224.0.0.252 which is totally weird as that's IANA the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority's block.

I'll uninstall the old JRE files and install the latest release 6 upddate 6 but I hope someone can offer a reason or solution for this weird activity, it's freaking me out.

I will not pretend I know Vista, my experience is limited to removing malware. I suggest you try a forum that deals with the program.
