• Welcome Guest, to the Spybot Forums! It's 2025, and we just upgraded our forum software.

Today is Safer Internet Day, and with our new forum, you can finally use passkeys to login. That was about time!

Of course, you could ask if a forum is still useful, with so many social media networks out there where you might already have an account, and met a lot of users. You can now use your login from some of those networks to log in here. And by posting here, your question and data is stored on our servers and not automatically shared with a whole social media network.

We'll also start using the forum for small bits of information, announcements and more again.

S&D 1.5.2 blocks Yahoo Messenger

Please help!
Yesterday I updated Search and Destroy for the first time in a while, and then updated the Immunize files too. No other updates for other software or other changes.
Immediately before updating, I could log into my Yahoo Messenger account. Immediately after updating, I could not log into my Yahoo Messenger account. A window pops up indicating there is a problem signing in and asks me to sign in later.
I can sign in to MSN Messenger as before with no problem. From another computer, I can sign into Yahoo Messenger. I deleted and downloaded Yahoo Messenger again and still no luck. I can access my Yahoo mail through the webpage.
I tried undoing Immunize and no change. What can I do to get fix my Yahoo Messenger?
I am running Vista Home edition. Thanks. Paul

n0uzn:

The problem is most likely caused by Spybot's Resident "SDHelper" blocking "Blacklisted URLs".

To stop "SDHelper" from blocking these URLs, go into Internet Explorer > Tools > select "Spybot – Search Destroy Configuration" > then in the "Spybot-S&D - Configuration" window in the "Settings" tab under "When encountering bad things" there are three options:
  • Block all pages silently
  • Display dialog when blocking
  • Ask for blocking confirmation
Select "Ask for blocking confirmation" and click "OK".

Exit Internet Explorer and restart it.

When you encounter a URL that would ordinarily just be blocked in "Block all pages silently" mode, Spybot's "SDHelper" will issue a "Spybot-S&D Bad URL Blocker" dialog. The dialog allows you to either "Allow" or "Deny" the access and also allows you to select among the following options:
  • Ask me again next time
  • Remember for this session
  • Always react this way
When you encounter a "Spybot-S&D Bad URL Blocker" dialog while accessing Yahoo, select "Always react this way" and then "Allow" the access.

Please note: There is a problem however with the implementation of "Always react this way" with both the "Allow" and "Deny". SDHelper stores the entire URL not just the domain. Because of this are likely have to respond to many URLs from the same domain. The problem has been recognized but has not been corrected yet:
_______________

As an alternative, you can disable "SDHelper" entirely, but that might expose you to banner ads that you do not want. To do that:
  • Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Resident. Under the heading "Resident protection status" you will see:
    • Resident "SDHelper" (Internet Explorer bad download blocker) active.
    • Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
  • Uncheck:
    • Resident "SDHelper" (Internet Explorer bad download blocker) active.
  • Exit Internet Explorer and restart it.

Doesn't work

I already did that and it made no difference. It isn't blocking anything in Explorer or Firefox. It is preventing me from signing into the Yahoo Messenger instant messenger program.
