View Full Version : Smithraud-C shows up in SpyBot after removed?

Greetings. This is my first post to these forums.

I followed all of the instructions to remove the Smithfraud-C virus from my computer, and it appears I have succeeded (ie. no more pop-ups, funky homepages, etc..) However, whenever I run SpyBot, the results still list Smithfraud-C, but when I select "fix selected problems", a message pops up that says Smithfraud-C cannot be removed because it using memory (I think this means that some process related to the virus is still running, therefore, using memory?)

Has anyone else had this problem? I would appreciate your help!

Thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forum. It may be everything did not get removed the first time and the fix might need to be run again, it could be some junk got left in the registry and Spybot is seeing that. It may take a registy edit to remove those? They may be harmless if all else is running ok. If you want to follow these instructions, I will take a look at a HJT log for you.

Hi Mike, I must apologize for the delay. For some reason I did not get my notification you had posted:scratch:

How is the computer running now? The HJT log is clean, there are three lines of clutter:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O18 - Filter: text/plain - (no CLSID) - (no file)

You can use HJT to remove those. If you are still getting the Smitfraud message try a this cleaner. Make sure to run "Issues" also and to back up what you remove. Let me know how you are doing.

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this one with these instuctions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Thanks...Phil
