Hello and TIA,
I believe I have a browser hijacker that adaware, spybot, mcaffee, panda and every other program seems to be missing.
My browser is crashing 6 or so times a day (IE6). It seems the last two I have opened seem to crash first. When I do a search on google, I sometimes endup on ebay with my google search term in the ebay search box. Obviously an affiliate cookie setter. Computer is crawling most the time. This is the first time I have ever needed help with adware so please let me know if I missed anything.

Thank you for taking the time to help me. I fixed the item you recommended with HJT, installed and ran a scan with ewido.
I have no idea what’s running out of the temp dir.
When I boot up I'm also getting a script error telling me that jaxepac cannot be loaded. I have no idea what that is.
My browsers are still crashing, hanging and otherwise causing me a lot of headache. Word and every other program is hanging like the 1gig of memory is not enough. Could it be that I cleaned out the problem before and damaged IE6 somehow? I tried to reinstall IE6, but the install program just tells me that it is already installed.
Is there anyway to repair IE6 to see if that’s the issue?
Any help would be appreciated.

rescan with ewido, except this time save the log file it can generate, or if you have one saved post it in next reply along with a new hjt log.

Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

3rd party browser add ons, malware or otherwise can fool with IE. some major offenders are tool bars, search helpers, optimizers, download managers etc.
these arent malware but you can have hjt fix them if you want, do fix the 021 item

on second thought, this needs more investigation:

notice there is also a:

see the difference, the one with the s (services.exe) is ok
its the first one listed (Service.exe) we want to check out
both in the same dir.

can do two things, manually browse to the file in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 dir.
right click on it, select properties, under one of the tabs, see if its from microsoft.
can also do this, go to this website:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html
at the top using the browse button, find the file again and click the send button for it to be uploaded. a report will be produced, if its malware we will get rid of it

right click on it and select properties. under the general tab:
make sure that the service status is: Stopped
and the Startup type is: disabled
next browse for the file again and try to delete it.

The "Service.exe" is NOT an ms product but the "services.exe" is.
I tried to upload it to virustotal, but it would not upload. The filesize is "0". I'm guessing it won't upload a file size of 0. I get this error from virustotal
"File size can't be more than 10 Megabytes.
You can't try compressing it."
Should I remove it? (Service.exe)

i woudnt remove it because we arent 100% sure about it being malware.
i would just disable it from running. to do that:
go to start>run and type in--> services.msc,<--in the list of services that comes up look for>>Service.exe (make sure you get the right one without the s on the end)
right click on it and select properties. under the general tab:
make sure that the service status is: Stopped
and the Startup type is: disabled

Thanks a bunch Shelf Life. If we didn’t get them all we got enough to make my computer usable again. I was contemplating suicide or a reformat for a couple days there. Both equally painful.
You guys are great and I really appreciate all your help.

glad to help. that >service.exe< should be ok if left on the computer as its disabled, but if you want if everything is running ok now you can delete it from the C:\WINDOWS\system32 dir.

Install a firewall. A firewall will control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. A firewall will also alert you when a application trys to connect to the internet from your computer, this is a good way to catch crapware or trojans, trying to connect out bound from your computer- whats that and why does it need a internet connection? You can deny it access it until more investigation is done. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. Microsoft XP firewall only provides inbound protection. SP2 adds in and out bound protection which is better than nothing, but is not as robust as third party firewalls, Be sure to run only >one< firewall.If you use another, be sure to disable XP's built in firewall. Watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with extra software.You may be installing more than you think. Make sure you understand what it is you will be downloading and installing to your computer. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits?. Read the EULA agreement, you know, that paragraph of stuff you "agree to" before the software installs? If you search hard enough you can always find a "clean" alternative to any software. Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is. DO YOU TRUST THE SOURCE?
