I was working with ndmmxiaomayi to clean my machine. My thread was closed over the weekend. I tried to PM and email, but ndmmxiaomayi is not accepting either at the moment. Can anyone please help me. I ran a kaspersky scanner this morning and it said I had 7 viruses with 30+ infected files. I am also going to provide an HJT log and a Combofix.

Hi,

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX from Kaspersky. Click Yes.
When the downloads have finished, click on Next button.
Click on Scan Settings button.
Select extended under Scan using the following antivirus database:
Check (tick) these boxes under Scan options: Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases Click OK
Click on My Computer under Please select a target to scan:
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. Click on Save as text button and save it to your desktop.
Copy and paste this log in your next reply.

Here is the Kaspersky report. Also I wanted to ask if th keylogger is still installed in my machine and if so, how do I remove it? Also I wanted to ask about Noton anti-virus. My subscription ends in about 8 days. Is there any other better programs available? I dont understand how I keep getting infected with this program running and scanning.. Thank you for your help.

Hi,

Your logs look fine to me.

Did you follow the procedure of this post (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=183216&postcount=35) to remove Combofix? If it has been done properly, there shouldn't be any infected System Restore points.

If you have already deleted Combofix, please create a new restore point this way:

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
On the Welcome screen, select Create a new restore point radio button and click Next.
Give this restore point a descriptive name and click on Create.

Also I wanted to ask if th keylogger is still installed in my machine and if so, how do I remove it?

The keylogger file is already removed as far as I can see. However, I don't guarantee anything as the keylogger is meant to be stealthy and I can't see any signs of it anywhere except the file.

Also I wanted to ask about Noton anti-virus. My subscription ends in about 8 days. Is there any other better programs available?

Here are 2 free alternatives to consider. Please install ONE antivirus and ONE firewall. Having more than 1 antivirus and firewall running may cause problems.

avast! 4 Home Edition (http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe)
AntiVir Free Edition (http://www.antivir-pe.com/freet/index.php?id=25&domain=free-av.com)

A paid version if you don't mind paying:

Eset NOD32 Antivirus 3.0 (http://www.eset.com/download/index.php)

For firewall:

Here's some free alternatives:

Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/downloads.html)
Webroot Desktop Firewall (http://www.webroot.com/En_US/consumer-products-desktopfirewall.html) --- You need to register before you can download it.
Comodo Personal Firewall (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)
Sunbelt Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
Sygate Personal Firewall Free (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sygate_Personal_Firewall_Free_d3356.html)

Again, if you prefer paying, here are some good paid-for firewalls:

Online Armour (http://dl1.online-armor.com/downloads/OnlineArmor_Setup_Trial.exe)
Sunbelt Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
Outpost Pro (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/)

I dont understand how I keep getting infected with this program running and scanning..

Nowadays, getting infected unknowingly is common. A lot of websites are compromised, therefore infecting users.

Have a read here to get a rough idea - http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=28

One way is to tighten your security settings. It is no longer enough to just have an antivirus and firewall protecting you.

There are more ways, which I will post later if you have no other issues.

Thank you for your help and patience. I removed combofix. The only issue I have now is the keylogger. My wife and I do banking, bill paying, anf ==d shopping online. Will it be safe for us to resume those activities?

You can resume these activities, but you should not use this computer to do so.

As I've mentioned, this keylogger is meant to be stealthy. Unless you re-format and re-install Windows, the best is to use another computer for such activities.

Hi, Unfortunately I think I will have to re-format and re-install. I do not believe I have any other issues other than the keylogger.

If you need help in re-formatting and re-installing Windows XP, you can refer to this guide:

I dont quite understand the beginning of the link you sent me for the install guide. Can I use my Windows XP Home Edition disk to begin the process? I dont know what an FDISK or a multi-boot is. Or how to configure my system for booting from a CD.

Hi,

Multi-boot is for people who wants to install more than one operating systems on their computers. If you don't want that, you can ignore it.

To configure your computer to boot from CD, see this - http://www.hiren.info/pages/bios-boot-cdrom

The whole guide starts from here:

1) Shall we begin? (Image 1.1)

You can use your Windows XP Home disc as long as the license key is not used on another computer. ;)

Hi...

I found my CORRECT os installation cd.... lol. So what I should do is configure my computer to boot from CD. Insert my "reinstallation DVD. Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with Update Rollup 2" and then follow the instructions in the link you provided for me? Thank you.

Also, My update manager is saying that updates are ready to install. It is saying that service pack 3 is ready, but when I try to run the automatic updates, an error message appears. Is service pack 3 going to need to be installed after I re-install?

Hi,

So what I should do is configure my computer to boot from CD.

See if this helps - http://www.hiren.info/pages/bios-boot-cdrom

SP3 contains a lot of updates and fixes, so yes, it needs to be installed after you re-installed Windows.
