Besides cookies, which I've now trashed, I received notification of the following when I did an online security check of my computer:

Can anyone advise me as to how to get rid of these? I was told they were "dangerous." I'm currently running Norton A/V, SpyBot, AdAware, and MS AntiSpyware, but none of these have detected the above. It was Panda Software's online scan that found them. Help, please!

Hi Shelflife. Thanks for looking at my log. I have been running Spybot, Ad-Aware, MS-Antispyware, and Norton A/V weekly for sometime. I just re-ran Ad-Aware, which detected one critical object which I subsquently deleted. I then ran Hijackthis again, and below you'll find the log. Do you want to see the log for my Ad-Aware scan as well?
I sure would be grateful if you could explain hidewindow.a, cws, killapp.a & killapp.b, and new.net which my Panda scan detected. Should I be worried about those?
One more thing: please reassure me that these logs I'm posting for all the world to see contain nothing "personal!" ;)

i wouldnt be to worried about pandas find. you have several malware apps youve run. all are capable of false positives or finding harmless leftovers.

I'm afraid the problem I had that started me attempting a thorough check of my system is still with me. Before I did the original Panda online scan, I'd had some funny things happening on my computer:
first, occasionally when I started my computer I'd find a red X through my Norton A/V icon. (This only began about a month ago.) If I investigated, it told me it was enabled. But someone told me not to trust that, so I turned Norton A/V off and then on again and the red X went away.
second, one time I got a warning that my MS Firewall was turned off. When I opened the security dialogue it said it was on. But I turned it off and then on again anyhow.
finally I started my computer and found my desktop image had disappeared. At that point I got worried and started trying to find if I had malware on my computer
The bottom line is today I started my computer and Norton A/V was once again disabled. I'm afraid there's something lurking somewhere that's interfering with my security software. Here's my latest Hijackthis log:

your in the right thread. dont see much in the log as far as malware goes. lets try another download:
1. Download Ewido and install
Ewido Security Suite. It is a free trial version of the program:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
2. Install ewido security suite
3. Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
4. The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
1. On the left hand side of the main screen click update
2. Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use Ewido manual updates
Once the updates are installed do the following:
1. Click on scanner
2. Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
3. NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
o If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
4. Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
5. Click Save report.
6. Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Well, before I got your reply, Shelflife, I thought I'd try one of the online scans you recommended. I used BitDefender and (3 hours later :( - 56K modem) I got this huge report from them. I had carefully deselected the delete & disinfect boxes before scanning, and selected Report only. But somehow BitDefender decided to "fix" things anyhow. These are the things it deleted from my computer:

ok before you download ewido. try this:
Do this:
start>settings>Control Panel> click the Internet options icon
Next:
Click on Delete Cookies.
Click on Delete Files, Make sure Delete all offline content is checked and then click on OK
Then click on Settings, then click on View Files if there is any thing in there, delete what you can.
(edit>select all--- then file>delete)
Then at the top in the address bar, at the end where it says:
\Temporary Internet Files
change it to \Temp then hit enter and delete what you can.
Go to:
Start> Run
And type this in:
C:\windows\prefetch
Once this is open Delete everything in the folder, not the folder itself

Yikes! :eek: That was very scarey indeed. What am I doing trusting this unknown person called shelf life?! But I did, and I followed your instructions to the letter - this morning when I turned on my computer Norton A/V was disabled again, so what could I do?
Anyhow, as I proceeded through your list a few things came up that I wanted to ask you about. Please explain why in the Temp folder I got
"The file 'IEC4.tmp' is a read-only file. Are you sure you want to move it to the Recycle Bin?" And then the system refused to delete IEC4.tmp, ~DFF95E.tmp, ~DFD67F.tmp, and JETD522.tmp.
I noticed also that the original SP2 installation file was in one of the temporary folders. I'm not going to want that again, am I? I remember that it took HOURS to download with my modem.
Please tell me what I just did, and reassure me that nothing was deleted that I'll miss later on!! :confused:

thats good, you should always ask yourself "do i trust the source?"
its ok to delete items in the temp dir. that sp2 file was the install .exe file. it already installed on your computer. some files may not delete without alittle "help". nothing was deleted that you will need.
the reason for all that is to get rid of any malware that may be lurking around.
i really dont see anything in your hjt log.
first thing we want to do is make sure its not malware or a virus thats causing your av to be disabled.
you have ms antispyware and norton av, i assume there up to date and you have used them recently.youve done a online scan also.
i would hold off ewido for now, since it would take along time to download via 56k modem.
have you poked around the norton website/forum for FAQ or troubleshooting?
rescan with hjt and post anew log, just to make sure nothings changed.

Hi shelf life. Yes, I do a weekly scan with Norton A/V, MS AntiSpyware, AdAware, and Spybot. I also have Norton automatically downloading updates as they become available.
I looked for information about Norton getting disabled on the Symantec website, and found nothing - in fact, they say they no longer "support" Norton 2002, even though I pay for an annual subscription renewal.:( Makes we want to consider an alternative when my subscription runs out this year.
Anyhow, here's the latest Hijackthis log. BTW: Haven't seen that red X on the Norton icon for the past few days, so hopefully trashing all those files did the trick (please, God:rolleyes:).

Watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with extra software.You may be installing more than you think. Make sure you understand what it is you will be downloading and installing to your computer. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits?. Read the EULA agreement, you know, that paragraph of stuff you "agree to" before the software installs? If you search hard enough you can always find a "clean" alternative to any software. Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is. DO YOU TRUST THE SOURCE?
I will probably delete those files, as suggested (definitely don't need a quicktime startup item, for example). And I'll go through all your "rainy day" reading.

Shelf life, the following is what was happening. Note that Norton Antivirus continues to be disabled frequently when I turn my computer on.
first, occasionally when I started my computer I'd find a red X through my Norton A/V icon. (This only began about a month ago.) If I investigated, it told me it was enabled. But someone told me not to trust that, so I turned Norton A/V off and then on again and the red X went away.
second, one time I got a warning that my MS Firewall was turned off. When I opened the security dialogue it said it was on. But I turned it off and then on again anyhow.
finally I started my computer and found my desktop image had disappeared. At that point I got worried and started trying to find if I had malware on my computer
The bottom line is today I started my computer and Norton A/V was once again disabled. I'm afraid there's something lurking somewhere that's interfering with my security software.

lets see, you have ms antispyware, SBSD, ad aware and norton AV. youve done some online scans also. i dont see any malware in the hjt log.

Thanks for that link, shelf life. I couldn't find that when I was looking all over Symantec's website - wonder why.
I did a formal disable and restart, and then re-enabled Norton A/V. The next thing they suggest is uninstall Norton and reinstall it. Sounds rather drastic. Think I'll wait till that red X comes back and then I'll check out the details for doing that. Don't think I'll be renewing my subscription this year. I'll go with one of those free A/V packages you told me about.
BTW, just did my weekly AdAware scan, and it found two tracking cookies: tribalfusion.com and real.com. How the heck do these guys get on my machine when I've got a prompt setup for cookies? In fact, real.com is in my "block" list. :scratch:

sure you have the correct URL added to the list. as far as malware goes, cookies are pretty harmless, iam not saying i dont clean mine out because i do. in firefox you can set it to dump all cookies when you close firefox ,automatically. In IE i use cookie pal to manage cookies.
have you tried firefox as a browser? you can have both firefox and IE and use either one on your computer.

Yep, as far as I can figure the tracking cookie that showed up had the exact URL as the one I'd blocked. Oh well, I'll see if it happens again - I wonder if I allowed it temporarily at some point.:o
Re Javascript: Jason's tests suggest that having Javascript enabled can put your computer at risk. I turned my settings to "prompt" and then had to enable scripting about 10 times for every page I visited today (safe sites)!:( Couldn't take it anymore so I enabled scripting in my IE options. What's your opinion about this, shelf life?

yea some of those changes in IE can make for annoying browsing, i dont think java is much a problem as activeX is.
i reccomend this:
Change your (active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable.
you tried firefox yet?
My activex settings are good, thanks. Haven't had a chance to try firefox yet - trying to keep up with my work as I'm trying to get my computer in better shape. Consequently progress is somewhat slow at this end, especially since Norton A/V's been behaving the past few days, thank you God!:rolleyes:
