Random pop up shows up

My computer runs slow every so often and when im navigating through different web sites, every now and then a window opens up saying something about viruses. Even if i choose not to open it and close it, it still opens into another window and it appears as if it is doing a scan of my computer. I know that these are just gimmicks and most of them only lead to worse things, but is there anything that i can do to make these stop from popping up? And is there anything i can do to make my laptop run smoother. I do have Ad-Aware running and i know it takes up a lot of memory, how can i disable all the services that it uses?
Any help would be grateful.

I personally use the Google Toolbar, but I do not allow all the junk they try to install, just the basic toolbar/popup blocker, you have to be careful when you download it.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.
