Tribalfusion, questionmarket, etc

Always done well avoiding nasty spyware until recently. Now I have something that I can't shake. Using XP, IE6, AVG, Spybot, Adaware and now Trend. Have purged System Restore, updated all software, run them in Safe Mode, etc. Also have used PCPitstop's scan. Can't get rid of a variety of these things. Spybot finds a few, Adaware finds a few, Trend finds a few, etc. - the common things I get are Tribalfusion, questionmarket, admarketplace, 2o7.net, falkag... I delete them and my confuser works great. Next time I reboot, they're back. I'm missing something. Please help me - it's getting old. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum. I am not seeing a lot in the log, so lets run some scans and see what we can come up with.

1) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

2) ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a trial version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

3) Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)

4) Run your cleaner and remove anything it locates. Restart the computer and post the ewido scan results and a new HJT log along with any feedback you think I should have.

Not much in the way of feedback from you? There is nothing showing in either the ewido scan report or the HJT log. You can use HJT to remove these:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

What you are describing sounds like cookies, called tracking cookies, data miners, etc. They are part of surfing, about every site you go to will put them on your computer unless you block them.

You have to remember certain valid sites need to place cookies for passwords, banking, etc. Some sites can't be viewed if you stop the cookies. You will have to override for the needed cookies.

Sorry about the feedback - didn't have much to say until I saw the outcome of what we did. Ran Spybot, Adaware, and Ewido 1st thing this morning. Ewido came up clean, Adaware picked up imrworldwide.com cookie, and Spybot is clean. I'll reboot in Safe with system restore off and see if that picks up anything else.

I'm puzzled how I picked up the new cookie because the only sites I've been to since that thorough scan last night are this one and yahoo.com (my homepage). Haven't been anywhere else to pick up a cookie. I have both IE and Google toolbar blocking cookies. I guess the best thing to do since HJT looks clean is to give it time to see how things work. Will be away from the computer over the weekend (work computer) so will see early next week how things are going. Thanks for your assistance.

OK, no problem and you are very welcome. I personally do not allow a cookie unless I put it there. In the beginning it requires a little effort, kind of like training a spam filter. This cookie imrworldwide.com leads to here:

I remove a lot of their spyware junk from computers. Don't think for a moment Yahoo won't put cookies and adware on your computer and that's all I will say about that.
