Howdy,
I looked at the other thread with WinReanimator in it and I promise I will read and reply.

I am working on my friends machine running Win XP. I installed S&D (which I use religiously on my own machine) but when I try and run it....nothing. TeaTimer seems to be running.

I did download hijackthis and renamed it as suggested in the other thread, but had same outcome. Renamed S&D with same outcome. I tried to uninstall WinReanimator which appeared to work, but a bubble keeps popping up saying that Windows has detected spyware and to click the bubble to download a spyware removal tool, which of course starts WinReanimator and tries to do whatever it does. Neither HiJackthis nor S&D will run.

Help!!!

I just thought that I have no idea how up to date her operating system is. Should I try and update that now/first.
I guess I will wait for some suggestions before I proceed.
Me thinks I only know enough to be dangerous.

Hello,
Sorry to hear of the problems, I moved your thread to the Malware Removal Forum (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22) from New and Undetected.

I looked at the other thread with WinReanimator in it and I promise I will read and reply.

Did you see this topic about malware removal:

Hi Rhythmdoc,

Let's see if you could get Deckard's System Scanner work.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

Thanks for the response Blade81.
I downloaded the Deckard's System Scanner on a clean machine and transfered to the infected one. Absolutely nothing happens when I try and open DSS. Same as Spybot and HJT.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp

Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

If you can't run MBAM in normal mode then try in safe mode (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm#02)

Hi

Let's try this one before MBAM.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Yes, you should turn it off. Then try running ComboFix thru in safe mode with command prompt. Here are steps to follow (print/save these since you won't be able to access them while in safe mode):
Press F8 before Windows' loading screen and select safe mode with command prompt -option.
Then write following commands:
cd\
cd C:\Documents and Settings\Robin\Desktop
Combo-Fix.exe

When done reboot back into normal mode and post contents of ComboFix log.

I guess I should say where I'm getting the log from, C:Combo-Fix\ComboFix.txt.
When ComboFix is done, it reboots the machine automatically. It says it is making the log, I noticed that the WinReanimator icon does not appear in the notification area at this time. Then ComboFix reboots machine again, and the icon for WinReanimator is back, and the log below is the only one I could find.

Hi

Is there any other ComboFix.txt file around on your C: drive?

At this point it won't do any harm to run GMER.

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) and save it your desktop:
Extract it to your desktop and double-click GMER.exe
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log in your reply.

EDIT: Skip this post and try method in next post.

Hi

Let's do some more researching.

First, please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes.
The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings and select the following:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (If available, otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK.
Under
select a target to scan
, select My Computer.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.Once the scan is complete:
Click on the Save as Text button.
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information into your next post if the AV content will fit into one post only.
If the results of the anti virus scan itself will take more than one post to contain, you may upload it to http://rapidshare.com

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the Accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

If having a problme doing the above

Make sure that your Internet security settings are set to default values.

To set default security settings for Internet Explorer:

* Open Internet Explorer.
* Go to the Tools menu, then choose Internet Options.
* Click on the Security tab.
* Make sure that all four item (Internet, Local intranet, Trusted sites, and Restricted sites) are set to their default settings.

After that go here (http://www.silentrunners.org/) and download Silent Runners.vbs (clicking the the download link works if you use IE. If you use FireFox, rightclick on the link and choose
Save Link As
to a new folder on your drive and run it. It generates a log too. It takes a minute or two and it will notify you with a popup when your log is ready (it will be in the new folder you created). Please post the information back in this thread. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious.

Hi

Before we try Kaspersky and Silent runners let's give ComboFix one more try. Follow instructions below:
1. Uninstall Spybot for now.

2. Move Combo-Fix.exe file from your desktop to root of C: drive (C:\). That way we can access it on every account.

3. Try running ComboFix thru in safe mode with command prompt. Here are steps to follow (print/save these since you won't be able to access them while in safe mode):
Press F8 before Windows' loading screen and select safe mode with command prompt -option.
Then write following commands (I assume you moved Combo-Fix.exe to C: root):
cd\
Combo-Fix.exe

When ComboFix reboots select safe mode with command prompt again so that ComboFix will finish there.

Hi

Great to see that worked :)

Please turn your Windows firewall on (http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B283673&x=13&y=11#) (SP2 option). Then let's clean off other bad items.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Robin\delself.bat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspoolg.dll
C:\3.tmp
C:\4.tmp
C:\o9vl29.exe
C:\5.tmp

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"braviax"=-

Save this as
CFScript

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into Combo-Fix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html).
Post a fresh hjt log too (without forgetting above meantioned ComboFix resultant log).

* Open Internet Explorer.
* Go to the Tools menu, then choose Internet Options.
* Click on the Security tab.
* Make sure that all four item (Internet, Local intranet, Trusted sites, and Restricted sites) are set to their default settings.

I believe that this machine is only updated to sp1 (as I see that noted when starting in Safe Mode). Should I update windows at this point, before taking the next steps you described last.

Hi

No, please don't update until we've finished cleaning process. That might cause problems.

Hi ,
I ran ComboFix and it acted as it did before. I noticed this time as it was rebooting the last time, right before the windows shutting down music that I heard the sound for when you try and do something and it doesn't work. That kinda low horn sound.

Anyway here is the log and the pend file. I am going to wait for a reply before I run ATF because I suspect I should be running ComboFix is safe mode. Please advise - run ATF now or rerun ComboFix in safe mode first.

Thanks again for sticking with me on this. I would have given up a long time ago, and just done a clean install. Maybe that wouldn't even work though.

Hi

Somehow it looks again that ComboFix didn't finish correctly. Please try running ComboFix with that CFScript file in safe mode.

HJT still will not run even in safe mode.

Please download (using other system) Comodo Firewall Pro here (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html) and install it to this infected system. Otherwise it's possible that baddies download new malware to your system when we got some older items cleaned making this never ending process.

When firewall is installed it's time to run ComboFix in safe mode with following CFScript:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\isat.exe
C:\WINDOWS\braviax.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cru629.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\braviax.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cru629.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\beep.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\beep.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\univrs32.dat

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\Drivers

Save this as
CFScript

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into Combo-Fix.exe
Then post the resultant log. Run also Kaspersky scanner again and post its report.

Hi,

An interesting thing happened. I use a Memory Stick to transfer stuff from the good machine to the infected one. I downloaded Comodo Firewall and put it on the Stick. I put the Stick in the infected machine and thought I would try and install the firewall right from the Stick. The process froze. I could not "end process" with the task manager, so I unplugged the Stick. At that point the desktop went blank and then came back to life as if it had been partially rebooted. Interesting thing is, the WinReanimator icon disappeared from the notification area. I then copied the Comodo Firewall to the desktop of the infected machine and tried to install. I get an error message: "Error 0 running command.\CFP_Setup_3.0.22.349_XP_Vista_x64.exe" before it is even done unzipping.

I tried this process again to verify that the WinReanimator icon disappears. I then redownloaded Comodo Firewall and tried to install again (without trying to install it from the Stick this time and got the same error message. I was curious so I tried installing the Comodo Firewall on my good machine and got the same error. I'm not sure why that is happening?

Should I try running ComboFix after I have made the WinReanimator icon disappear as described above?

Please run ComboFix with that CFScript in safe mode. You should also keep that machine disconnected since without a firewall risks are really high to get reinfected. By keeping system disconnected we can be sure that no extra pests are downloaded. That said copy combofix resultant log to your memory stick and from that to your clean system and then back into this topic.

Important thing is to get a firewall installed. It's possible that Comodo download was corrupted. Please try redownloading it on your clean system. Then test it there to see if packet is working. If it is install it to that infected system (don't connect it to net). If still no success try free version of Zonealarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp)

You should make sure you download 32 bit version (http://download.comodo.com/cfp/download/setups/CFP_Setup_3.0.22.349_XP_Vista_x32.exe) of Comodo.

Rhythmdoc

Will do, I downloaded the 64bit version of Comodo because I believe the infected machine is only updated to SP1 and the 32bit version says for XP-SP2.

And yes, I will keep the machine off the net. When I ran Kaspersky is the first time it had been on the net since we started (just so you know).

You don't think I should try and run ComboFix while that WinReanimator icon is gone?

Hi

I believe it makes no difference running ComboFix while winreanimator icon is appearing or not. Shall wait for your input :)

I am a curious sort, so I ran ComboFix at the point where WinReanimators' icon was missing. I believe ComboFix was able to do more. Also, when I rebooted the machine in regular mode the WinReanimator icon did NOT reappear.

Here is the ComboFix log:

Comodo would not install, the 32bit complained that i was only SP1 and the other one gives the same error message. I did try and download it a couple times to differant places and then move it to infected machine, but no good.

I did get ZoneAlarm to install and is now up and running.

Hi

Since c:\windows\drivers folder contained also other files than only bad beep.sys it's better to restore those.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

DeQuarantine::
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\Drivers

File::
C:\WINDOWS\Drivers\beep.sys

Save this as
CFScript

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log and contents of DeQuarantine_log.txt file (in c:\combofix folder or root of c: drive).

If you have Zonealarm up and running it's time to run Kaspersky online scanner. Post back its report, a fresh hjt log and above meantioned ComboFix related logs. Please re-download HijackThis since infection may have damaged the present version.

At the end of the process, after the log appeared, Notepad gave me a dialog box with "Cannot find the \DeQuarantine.txt file. Do you want to create a new file?" What should I do with that?

I have left it at that point.

I was going to run ComboFix in safe mode again to see what the differance would be, but maybe that is not necasary.

Still no WinReanimator icon at this point.

Allow it to create a one.

I assume you haven't scanned with Kaspersky yet. Please post its report when done and try to get that hjt log too. I'm eager to see that :) Remember to remove present version of HijackThis, re-download a new copy and try creating hjt log with it.

Heres the HJT log and I will wait to hear from you before I run Kaspersky as HJT is waiting for me to check some boxes and "fix checked".

Hi

That's looking good. Kaspersky findings in system restore and QooBox folder are bad ones. Those that Kaspersky flagged as Trojan.Win32.Patched.bz can be ignored since the bad file they were patched to run is deleted. Main thing after bad findings are cleaned is to get Windows updated. SP1 is far from unvulnerable.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type "C:\Combo-Fix.exe" /u in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=48)
The program is available for download here (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-1)
Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=43)
Spybot can be downloaded at this location (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10122137.html?part=dl-spybot&subj=dl&tag=but)
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. See here (http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#scanners) to choose one (AVG, Avast and Antivir are good choices there).

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hi,

Thanks so much for all your help and patience.

I tried to uninstall Combo-Fix.exe and got an error msg. of:

I tried a few different ways and couldn't get it done.
I hope I'm not making a mistake by continuing on with the rest of your instructions before ComboFix is uninstalled, but I think I'm gonna chance it.

Let me know if I should try a differant way. BTW I see the Combo fix icon in C:, but I cannot locate the ComboFix.exe file. Even with a search.

Hi

What error did you get with ComboFix uninstallation? Did you write the bolded part ("C:\Combo-Fix.exe" /u) exactly in the run box?

BTW I see the Combo fix icon in C:, but I cannot locate the ComboFix.exe file. Even with a search.
You can remove the icon since it's pointing to the combofix exe file on desktop most likely and since we moved the exe to the root of c: drive the link won't be valid.

Hi,

OK, I must be a little sleep deprived. I found that SP1 is no longer supported by the microsoft update site that was set up in the machine. I did find the right site and am now updating windows. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi,

It looks like I'm doing good.

I ran spybot and heres the report:

Hi

Yes, you can (and should) fix those findings. How's the system working now? Did you had success with updates?

Rhythmdoc

Hi,

Thanks, yes the system seems to be working fine. It seems a little slow, but I'm thinking that it is not too bad. I got it updated and windows firewall working.

I can't thank you enough for all your help.
