Can I use Spybotsd152.exe on my notebook with Vista Home Premium sp1 (32 bit I believe), Spyblaster, AVG-AV, AVG-AS?
Can my husband use on his notebook with WinXP sp2 (with IE6, Spyblaster, AVG-AS, AdAware)?

Our elderly neighbor has Win98, but thought we would ask anyway = would Spybotsd152.exe work on her notebook?

The only thing in your list of software that may cause a problem is IE6. There appears to be a conflict between Spybot's latest SDHelper Browser Helper Object (BHO) and Google's toolbar when both are used together in IE6. That combination seems to prevent Internet Explorer from launching properly (for example see this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=23856)).

Spybot 1.5.2 has severe issuses with IE 6 and the Google Toolbar when the SD Helper is active. To sort this problem you can do one of the following:

1: Don't Use The SD Helper

2: Uninstall Google

3: Upgrade to IE 7 (This being the preferable option)

With regards to Ad-Aware Spybot is fine as long the Ad-Adware Realtime Monitor is not active.

Spybot 1.5.2 and Spywareblaster 4.0 work well together.

To run Spybot under Vista it must have full Admin privilages, to set these right click the Spybot Icon > Properties > Compatibility tab > "Always Run As Administrator".

Spybot 1.5.2 Has Severe Compatiblility issues with AVG Version 8 so I would not recommend using them together until the AVG problem has been sorted out by the developers of AVG. A much better option is to use Avast! Anti-Virus as it is free and only requires you to register it for free and then re-register it once a year to use it.

Make sure you have good firewall as the built-in Windows Firewall is a joke and a pain to use. The most popular Free Firewalls are ZoneAlarm (The one I use) and Comodo though please note niether of these will run on Win 98. Though please note Zone alarm currently exists in 2000/XP (7.0.473.0) and Vista (7.1.248.000) only editions both of which are avaliable from the Zone Alarm website.

As for Win 98 I wouldn't recommend it as there currently exist some major memory and scanning issues when run under this OS, though some users have claimed success by increasing the amount of Virtual Memory that is avaliable and Having Spybot and Dr. Watson as the only running processes.

We (husband and I) do use Scandoo/Google browser as homepage (in IE6), but could, of course, use Excite or one of the others. Is that what you meant?
If we didn't use the Scandoo/Google browser (as homepage) would we then be able to use SpyBot152 (with our IE6)?

NIS 2005 is one of the worse things you could have on your system as it doesn't like ANYTHING, it is a complete resource hog, couldn't stop a virus to save it's life and it's firewall is a joke (it locked me out more times than the hackers) and is buggy and unreliable to boot. After the last bout of trouble NISS 2005 caused me I decided to ditch it... best decision I ever made. If you have anything else made by Symantec on your systemget rid of it and you'll thank me later!!!!

Everything After NIS 2002/3 is to be avoided like the plague as they are all resource Hogs and have major compatibility problems with smaller programs like Spybot.


I've ranted enough, so be warned you are better off with the smaller 3rd party programs like Avast! and Spybot etc. then with bloatware like Symantec and McAfee!

We know about the 'pit-falls' of NIS(2005) and we intend to delete the NIS when subscription updates run-out in a few months. What I really wanted to know is:
#1- will Spybot152 work with NIS2005?

Hello alicez. To answer your question, Spybot-SD can co-exist with these programs because generally they're all anti-malware scanners, except AVG AV. I believe Spybot-SD can co-exist with Norton IS 2005. I would say it is a positive benefit... I mean having Spybot-SD on your computer because it a malware scanner. TeaTimer is the Resident Shield of Spybot-SD. It alerts for changes in the registry, homepage, etc. Just like Winpatrol... much like a Watchdog. :cowboy:

Also, once your NIS 2005 subscription runs out, I would suggest download a "free" AV such as Avast!, AVG 8.0 Free, or Antivir. A firewall would be preferable such as Comodo or ZoneAlarm Free.
