Hi,

Tried to download a game on Sunday - was hit with several trojans and all sorts of things. Norton was able to find 2 of them and remove. Ran spybot (latest version with most current updates) and came up with all kinds of stuff - 27 entries. Found virtumonde (9 entries) - we are down to one entry now. The file is showing up in my system 32 and is a library file but labeled as "old" I can see where the key changes have been made. My task manager has been disabled, I can't get on this website by clicking on the link, I can't visit any site that has anything to do with computers, etc. One of the team members here emailed me a link to try another virtumonde removal, but I can't download. I was able to download ComboFix and Hijack This although I honestly don't know how because nothing else will download. I've even tried tonight to wipe my hard drive and reinstall my Windows XP - but I'm not doing something right and out of frustration gave up. I tried to do a system restore on sunday, the only choice it gave me was Sunday but didn't help. Any help or suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.

Tammy

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition, IE7, Spybot ver 1.5.2 and Norton.

Went to Norton site. Downloaded virtumonde fix - Norton said it wasn't on my computer. Can't believe I was even able to download it. Spybot did find it - many times actually. Ran a spybot scan last night and this morning and spybot found nothing - at all. I still can't download anything, can't visit web pages by clicking on the link, etc. Something is definately going on. Each time I try to download anything, such as a program that one of your staffers gave me the link to, I get a message "Internet Explorere cannont download file........Internet Explorer was not able to open this site" This happens with games, downloads, anything. My task manager is still not working. As I said in the previous post, I can see the registery changes from the beginning (Sunday) since Spybot directed me to them.

Thanks again for any help or suggestions you may have.

Hi Scoutmander

Please post next a fresh HijackThis log :)

Hi,

I would love to post another one.....but now HijackThis will not open nor will
Combo Fix. All communications with the Internet concerning anything to do with computers is shut out. I can visit Google, Yahoo, the news, etc. I can't even get to this forum (I'm at work right now) through my system. I can access your main page from Spybot.com but thats it. Tried to use the recovery CD that came from Dell - it doesn't even work and shows absolutely nothing on the disk either. We are going to try to boot from a friends WinXP tonight. Downloaded new charter security suite to see what it would find, but it won't connect to internet (but I really am connected) to validate key and can't remove Norton. It started in on my outlook yesterday and since I'm looking for a job, that sorta sucks. Basically - it's just one big freakin mess. If all else fails, I'll get my credit card ready and call Dell (my computer is out of warranty - of course). If you reply to this - send a message that will hit my in box so I can click on the link from there to get back here.

Hi

Likely fake beep.sys is preventing those from running.

Try this:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_FF.gif

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

I will try that today and try to post my logs. Last night, I tried to copy and paste the last log that Hijack ran (a couple of days ago) and the text wouldn't copy. I then tried to copy and paste in an email and send it to myself again so I could post it here from work. That didn't work either since it seems to have my email account now.

We tried to boot from another Windows XP disc - sytem can not boot from disk. Copied a new BIOS from the Dell site, it says it installed it, but not sure.

Thanks again for all your help. Keeping my fingers crossed that I can post these logs back to you!

Tammy

Hi

That's great, posting of logs should work then via those pcs if only you are able to run tools :)

I wasn't able to open the combofix, but I was able to copy the hijack this log onto a disc. We ended up wiping my harddrive and reinstalling windows xp. Have to update everything now. I wish that I couldh have posted everything back to you but it just wasn't meant to be I guess. I really appreciate the help you have given me and the quick replies. One of the first things I'm doing tonight when I get home is to download spybot again. I just installed the new charter internet security suite since it is free and not renew Norton.

I have learned a big lesson for this - stay away from Torrent sights and keep your pop-up blocker on at all times if you don't know what you're doing - and I obviously didn't! I'll pay for my games in the future LOL!

Thanks again,
Tammy

Hi

Java needs to be updated:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and save it to your desktop.
Scroll down to where it saysThe Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications..
Click the Download button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

After that, please post back a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi

That looks good :)

Still problems?

Everything seems to working fine now. I have been getting an error message when on IE7 about the add-on from shockwave/macromedia and it closes IE7. I went in and disabled that add-on to see if that would help and so far no more error messages.

I have to download Spybot tonight. I'm trying out the new Charter Internet Suite (they offer it for free). So I will have that and spybot.

Thank you so much for all your help!

Tammy

Hi

Then you're clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

You can fix this, it's a leftover:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide (http://bfccomputers.com/index.php?showtopic=1644)

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide (http://bfccomputers.com/index.php?showtopic=1645)

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Instructions for Spybot S & D (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
