Hi. I am a newbie to this site and to HJT. I was able to run HJT on one of the computers that is running extremely slow. Can someone tell me what to make of this? I have one other computer that has issues, but is not nearly as slow as this machine. Help is greatly appreciated!!

Hi billycuth

You are running HijackThis from temp folder.

Click here (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe) to download HJTInstall.exe
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Besides just running slow, both computers hang a bit after you enter the windows password. It does one of 3 things:

1. after you type the password and hit enter, nothing happens for about a minute. It looks as though the password was not entered. The password screen is still displayed, but if you put the mouse cursor in the password box, it disappears. If you take the mouse cursor out of the password box, it reappears. You cant click or do anything until it finishes whatever it is doing.

2. it says "loading personal settings" for about a minute or so.

3. it goes to a completely blank desktop for a minute or so.

After each event, the icons are slow to come up, and it must take about 2-3 minutes maybe more for you to actually be able to do anything. Safeguard encryption software is required by my company. Both computers are laptops. We dock them when in the office, and have them undocked when we are offsite.

I know that a software conflict could be a possibility, but our corporate office technology department tests the software before they deliver it to the field. My tech desk feels it has to be a virus or malware, but they do not have a specific vendor that they use for malware. We have McAffee virus console. It picks up nothing.

I tried eliminating things from startup. Doesn't help. I have defraged. I clean my drives all the time. I uninstall obsolete software as soon as possible. I really dont know what else it could be...

I don't see anything there which could indicate to malware but we can do a further research if you like to.

it's odd that both computers would have the same problem if it is malware, so I guess the conflict is more likely. Any ideas how to isolate the problem?

Hi

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Click the Save Report As... button (see red arrow below)

In the Save as... prompt, select Desktop
In the File name box, name the file KasScan-ddmmyy (or similar)
In the Save as type prompt, select Text file (see below)
