I desperately need some major league assistance. I fear the infection on my PC will take an all-out effort to kill, and may end with a drive reformat. I have read thru many forums and it seems you have had the best solutions. I have been working to rid myself of something very nasty for nearly 4 weeks with few positive results.

BACKGROUND: Media Center XP (SP2). All OS Updates current except for last 4 weeks. Was running McAfee Internet Suite as primary Anti-everything product with SpyBot S&D and Adaware as backups, so have recent versions of each. Noticed computer running slowly 4 wks ago. Performed several scans to no avail. System perfomance getting progressively worse. Something shuts-down McAfee system guards and firewall at random. Had to add free or trial versions of ZoneAlarm & Avast just to protect system. Have used nearly all major scanning applications to try to remove. Some found and removed various malware, but performance still getting worse. Have checked hardware - all OK. Now unable to access IE7 in XP-Normal Mode. AM using laptop PC to communicate, shuffling data files via USB thumb drive. Please Help! Here is HJT system scan log:

Hi

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode

On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Hi

Please disable McAfee (if it's working) to make sure it won't prevent following hjt and ComboFix runs.

Start hjt, do a system scan, check:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close browsers and other windows. Click fix checked.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as
CFScript

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes.
The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings and select the following:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (If available, otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK.
Under
select a target to scan
, select My Computer.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.Once the scan is complete:
Click on the Save as Text button.
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information into your next post if the AV content will fit into one post only. Post a fresh hjt log too (without forgetting above meantioned ComboFix resultant log).

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the Accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

If having a problme doing the above

Make sure that your Internet security settings are set to default values.

To set default security settings for Internet Explorer:

* Open Internet Explorer.
* Go to the Tools menu, then choose Internet Options.
* Click on the Security tab.
* Make sure that all four item (Internet, Local intranet, Trusted sites, and Restricted sites) are set to their default settings.

Sorry this is taking so long. It was difficult to disable McAfee. It had 12 processes running and it took another utility to totally disable it for this session. Unfortumately, it came back on after the reboot of Combo fix and posted an error message (McAfee System Guards Service encountered a problem and needs to close) while ComboFix was preparing the log. The log was finally created. If this has prevented an accurate log, I will need to totally uninstall McAfee Suite. Please let me know if this is necessary.

One of my main problems is I cannot get IE7 to load in XP-Normal mode. It tries to start and shows as a running process, but after 25 minutes, it still hasn't connected. I can get AV updates from Spybot S&D, so I know the connection to the internet works. I'm not sure how to get to Kaspersky to run the online scan unless this can be done from Safe Mode + Networking.

I am running the ATF-Cleaner app, but wanted to get you this log as soon as possible.

Here is the latest ComboFix log:

Hi

One of my main problems is I cannot get IE7 to load in XP-Normal mode.
When did IE start doing this? This may sound like a dumb question but is it possible that firewall is preventing IE from getting a connection? I see you've got both ZoneAlarm and firewall of McAfee there. Actually you shouldn't use more than one firewall in same system since that may cause unexpected behaviour.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file & a fresh hjt log in your next reply.

I agree that it can be troublesome to have more than one firewall running. My concern was that the McAfee firewall kept shutting down and not having a firewall was an option I didn't want to run with, so ZoneAlarm was a quick and painless way to get a firewall installed until the malware was gone. If you think the system is stable enough, I'll kill ZoneAlarm since it's an evaluation copy.

Thanks for your expert help so far. I hope we can get all running smoothly again.

IE7 started it's erratic behavior before I installed ZoneAlarm. It acts like there is malware which is listening to a TCP or UDP port and clogging the pipe. Locally running productivity applications like Microsoft Office and others which don't interact with the internet don't seem to be affected. I ran a McAfee scan during these last 4 weeks and the scan took 5 days to run. It was slogging thru the 7 host file registry trees which have literally thousands of entries in each one. It seems like the registry is getting larger every day. A malady which probably goes along with XP. Thanks again for helping so far and keeping with me.

Hi

You should also uninstall Avast since McAfee has antivirus feature built in. Other possibility is uninstall McAfee and keep Avast and install some firewall (there's free version of Zonealarm too but at the moment Comodo Firewall seems to be best one available).

Could you try uninstalling and then installing IE7 again?

Can do. Will post results. Will:

1) uninstall IE and reinstall. Check results.
2) uninstall ZoneAlarm. Check results.

Will post results in this thread. This could take a couple of hours to complete. Thanks for all your efforts so far.

Ok. I hope it will work :)

This took hours longer than I anticipated. Uninstalling IE7 was the worse thing I want to tackle in the next 50 years. Having said this, I was finally successful in reinstalling the latest version with all security updates and malicious software removal tools. I then removed ZoneAlarm. IE7 is very fast as long as it's used in Safe Mode + Networking. I had to temporarily turn on ZoneAlarm in Safe+Networking since McAfee's firewall would not load in this mode.

IE7 actually loads now in Normal mode, where it just hanged itself before and didn't return anything. But it gives a quick response of network connection not there. I have tested the connection in each of the two modes and there is a live connection. I can ping the same IP address which is out in the cloud.

I ran Malwarebytes in Safe+Networking mode and it picked-up 16 infected objects all of which were successfully quarantined and deleted. These could have been received during a time in Safe+Networking when I was testing IE7 and before I realized that McAfee firewall was not running. I attached the Malwarebytes log at the bottom of this post for your information.

I still can't understand why IE7 won't work correctly. I researched Microsoft's IE7 knowledge base and found references to MTU settings. TCP could have been sending packets too large in Normal mode. I suppose it is possible that malware could have reset the MTU values in the registry effectively disabling IE7's ability to communicate in Normal mode. But I haven't seen anything like this in any other forums. TCP outside of IE7 is sending the correct size packet. So tomorrow after 17:00 U.S. Eastern Time, I will check the registry settings which Microsoft suggests. I don't hold too much hope for this.

If you can think of something else, I'll try anything. I haven't tried totally uninstalling McAfee yet in the hopes that it still has value. Remember the subject of this thread "Severe PC Infection". I'm approaching the end of my rope. Many thanks.

Since I can now run IE7 in Safe+Networking, I ran the Kaspersky online scan. Log file follows. More positive hits. Looks like something hidden keeps turning on and reinfecting.

Hi

To narrow down possibilities could you try if Firefox (www.mozilla.com/firefox) worked? If it works then the problem is IE related if not then problem is with internet connection in general. Also, you meantioned something about host file registry trees. What do you mean with those?

Hi.....I'm not ignoring you. Had to go to my real job, so I have no access to my home PC. Did not get the opportunity to try your last suggestions before work. Will have to wait until tonight after work (17:30 U.S. EDT = +5 hours for you). Will probably be too late for you to respond. Thanks.

Ok. I'll wait for your input :)

First I'll try to explain the reference I made earlier to hostfile registry keys:

There is a reserved name within TCP/IP called the localhost which TCP interprets as "my computer". Access a command prompt and enter the command "ping localhost". It will always loopback to your computer and return the 127.0.0.1 IP Address. In effect, you're using TCP to communicate with your local machine.

Many of the antivirus/antimalware products use something called a hostfile which is stored on your local machine.

Your browser or any program that uses TCP/IP looks through this hostfile to see if a site it is requesting is located in the hostfile. If you view the hostfile (several utilities will allow this) it would have entries in it for all the internet sites you don't trust plus all the sites that the antimalware program has identified as untrustworthy. Each site is assigned the IP address of 127.0.0.1.

If the program accessing the internet wants to get to one of the sites listed in the hostfile, then the transmission is loopedback to your localhost by sending the request to 127.0.0.1. since TCP will not allow any transmitted packet from this address block to appear outside of your local machine. This way, you will not get to the untrusted site. (There's also a much more technical explanation.)

Good old Windows XP keeps copies of the local hostfile in 7 branches of the registry. In my PC, each instance contains literally thousands of 127.0.0.1 entries which has severely increased the size of the registry. McAfee was having a terrible time getting through all of them while performing a deep registry scan; hence, the 5 x 24 hour days running the scan.

Hostfile instances in registry are located here:

I think at this point that McAfee has somehow been corrupted as it's firewall and system guards continually shut down, even after I bring them back online manually. I had some family business to attend to last night after work & couldn't do any work on my infected PC. I'll try again tonight to load Firefox and see what happens.

Yeah. I do know hosts file :) I'm using MVPS hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) myself and recommending it to forum visitors as well.

If you fear that McAfee has been corrupted please try uninstalling and then reinstalling it if possible to see if it makes any difference.

It was very late last night when I turned-on my PC. I was going to install Firefox as you had suggested. Once I passed through the Windows authentication screen and while some of the tray programs were starting, I saw something quite bizarre. I'm not sure how many, but between 4-7 command prompt screen opened in rapid succession. Each one was blank and they all closed themselves in a matter of 5-10 seconds. I thought this cannot be good, so I turned off the PC and this morning before work, I ran Malwarebytes (nothing found), Spbybot S&D (only a Doubleclick tracking cookie found), and Adaware (nothing found) I would have run ComboFix, but I don't know how to interpret the log file and I was running out of time. I successfully downloaded WinXP updates which included a new MS Malicious Software Removal Tool and a WinDefender update. Then I ran a HJT (log enclosed below). There's only one BHO I can't identify in the HJT log: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0A87E45F-537A-40B4-B812-E2544C21A09F} - (no file).

My IE7 is back the way it used to be in that it hangs in Normal Mode but will work in Safe+Networking.

I didn't want to install Firefox on a possibly infected system, but if you think I'm OK, then I'll go ahead with this. Plans for tonight include: 1) uninstall McAfee, reinstall & run recommended scans. This may require a call to them; 2) install FireFox if I have time.

If you think I should run ComboFix just to be on the safe side, please let me know & I'll send the log file. THANKS!

Hi

The hjt entry is a remnant of SpyCatcher (http://www.castlecops.com/tk1861-SCActiveBlock_dll.html). That's a legal one but can be fixed since the entry is a remnant as I said.

And as said earlier I'd test with Firefox to see if the problem is with internet connection in general.

Now that you meantioned ComboFix I think we could run one script with it.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Domains::

Save this as
CFScript

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Hi

Delete C:\WINDOWS\imsins.BAK file. Did you test connection with Firefox? If not, please do so.

Blade81,

I installed Firefox this morning. It seemed to go well, no error messages during install. I chose the standard install (something I never do); I said no when asked if I wanted to import anything from IE. Firefox could not connect to any external www site to display any page.

MY OBSERVATIONS:
-----------------
I don't believe this is a general connection issue - but only in the context of browser access. In other words, something has turned-off or is blocking my ability to use a browser - again - in XP Normal mode.

1) I downloaded the Firefox setup exe file on the same PC in Safe+Networking (S+N) mode. Both IE7 and Firefox display pages in S+N mode.

2) I can get updates using Normal mode for any programs I run. I can ping www IP addresses in both S+N and Normal modes. I can get updates in Normal mode from Spybot and other programs that do not require the browser to load. I can also get my email using OutlookExpress in Normal Mode.

3) I have tried to open IE7 without add-ons & that doesn't work in normal mode either, but at least it seems like it gets a little further along as it shows the status bar moving to about 50% before hanging.

4) I have 2 other PCs that use the same connection through the same inbound/outbound infrastructure, running the same OS and browser versions. They have no problems.

From what I know about Safe+Networking, it doesn't load certain hardware interface drivers such as printer drivers, and it uses the standard VGA graphics driver. Perhaps it's some malware that loads into memory but is so hidden or that uses a normal filename that it can't be detected by hard drive scanners.?.?

I think I had a fair amount of malware on my PC, which you have done an excellent job of identifying and removing. Have you heard of any malware similar to what I describe?

I found an instance on another forum where someone had the identical problem. They stated: "I can't connect to the internet in regular mode. So I called my ISP provider (Bellsouth or AT&T) for technical assistance. Out of all the recommendations he gave me, the only thing that allowed me to be able to connect to the internet is by going to safe mode with networking."

There was no final outcome posted on the forum, but suggestions included turning off the firewall, and another one which said: "My guess would be more
along the lines of a DNS Hijack virus that is rerouting or preventing your connection to the internet when not running in safe mode. Sometime you can
get a virus or spyware that is only half removed by anti-virus programs and the end result is no ability to get the outside network. I've seen the same
problem a few times in the past and the easiest solution to correct it has always been the SmitFraudFix program, which currently resolves DNS Hijack
issues and a growing list of other viruses. This isn't an anti-virus or anti-spyware program, but rather a patch or fix to remove existing problems. If
it doesn't find or correct your problem, it won't cause any harm to your system, so no risk in running it."

I found many other references to the DNS cache (which is local to each machine) being corrupted - usually by some malware. Another of my symptoms is that I can ping ip addresses, but not their DNS name. There is a command that can be run in a safe mode command prompt = ipconfig /flushdns. I'll be trying this tonight.

Blade81.....have you used or had any success with this SmitFraudFix program? Should I try it?

I feel a bit rejuvenated now. I really think we're going to kill this with just a little more digging. THANKS AGAIN. I've noticed a lot more people on the forum with problems. You must be very busy.

Hi

SmitfraudFix is not something I would use here since nothing indicates that you have Smitfraud infection. I still suspect that this may be firewall related. I don't think either Zonealarm or McAfee loads in safe mode and that would explain why you're able to access net there. You might want to uninstall both McAfee and Zonealarm and enable XP own firewall for now.

Also, try restoring original hosts file.

Download the HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager (http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip).

Unzip HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager
Run HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
Click on "File Handling".
Click on "Restore MS Hosts File".
Click OK on the Confirmation box.
Click on "Make Read Only?"
Click the X to exit the program.
Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Blade81.....You probably thought you were never going to get rid of me. Well, the day has come. It looks like you were right. It was a firewall issue, but a strange one.

I talked to a co-worker about my problem. She said she had the same problem about a year ago! I was shocked. She said McAfee had messed up her license subscription and had expired it early without informing her. I called McAfee this morning and they had done the same thing to me. They sent me a link to a script file that totally uninstalled all references to McAfee on my system. Then they had me send them configuration info from my PC. They said I needed to uninstall Spybot S&D, Avast, and ZoneAlarm. That these programs were totally incompatible with McAfee. (I know this is not absolutely true, since I'm running Spybot and Avast on a laptop at the same time as McAfee.) But I followed their instructions.

Then I had to reinstall McAfee and download all the updates.

As soon as the install rebooted - IE and Firefox started working in Normal Mode!!! When my McAfee license expires, I'm going with a different program. This is a terrible way to do business.

I have learned a lot from your capable, careful, and sincere assistance. I also have a few utilities I can use to keep my PC running in great shape. THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your help and you perseverance!
